T3’s 2023 review found the speaker enjoyable and easy to listen to, but judged its 360-degree output less convincing than the marketing implication suggests.
Those comments should be read as three outlets’ subjective evaluations rather than a universal sonic verdict. Room acoustics, placement, music choice, listening distance and personal taste can change the result. The four-driver arrangement, 101 dB specification and processing features indicate what B&O is aiming for, but they do not establish how the speaker will sound in your room. Active Room Compensation is intended to adjust the speaker’s response for its surroundings, while Adaptive Bass Linearization manages low-frequency output as playback level changes. The app also provides customizable equalization. These tools are useful when a speaker moves between a shelf, a kitchen counter and an outdoor-adjacent location, because each position can reinforce or weaken different frequencies. They cannot remove every reflection or boundary effect, and they do not turn the A5 into a pair of physically separated stereo speakers.

How portable is the Beosound A5?
Portability is a matter of distance and frequency rather than a simple yes-or-no label. The integrated handle and 28.5 × 18.7 × 13 cm footprint let one person relocate the A5 between rooms without a power cable. At 3.7 kg, however, it is substantially heavier than the small speakers most people carry in one hand or a backpack. TechRadar specifically treats the weight as evidence that it is not truly portable in the lightweight-speaker sense.
- Good fit: moving from a living room to a kitchen, bedroom, home office or covered terrace.
- Manageable but deliberate: taking it to a friend’s house or packing it for a car trip where its size and weight are acceptable.
- Poor fit: long walks, cycling, air travel with strict luggage limits or any situation where you want a speaker you can casually carry all day.
The handle solves the grip problem, not the mass problem. If you expect a battery speaker to live mostly in a fixed room and move only occasionally, the A5’s weight is less troublesome. If “portable” means lightweight and frequently carried, choose a smaller class of product instead.
How long does the Beosound A5 battery last?
Bang & Olufsen specifies up to 12 hours of battery playback. “Up to” is important: it is a maximum claim, not a guaranteed result at every loudness or with every connection. High volume, Wi‑Fi streaming, weak wireless conditions, repeated reconnection and other processing can all change consumption. Using the speaker’s built-in Qi surface to charge a phone also draws energy from the A5 and shortens the time available for music.
Plan around the rating rather than promising yourself a 12-hour day. For a long event, bring the supplied USB‑C power supply and cable or arrange access to mains power. A short household move does not require that preparation, but a full day away from an outlet may, especially if you intend to charge a phone at the same time.

Qi phone charging trade-off
The top charging surface is convenient when a compatible phone is running low, but it is not free energy. While music plays, the speaker is doing two jobs from one battery. Treat Qi charging as an emergency or convenience feature, not as an extension of the A5’s playback endurance.
Can you use the Beosound A5 outdoors?
You can use it outside with sensible protection. B&O lists an IP65 rating, which indicates dust protection and resistance to water jets under the rating system. The company also explicitly warns that the wood components and paper weave may be damaged by water. That material warning is why “waterproof” is the wrong description.
- Use it on a dry, covered patio, balcony or picnic table when rain and splash are unlikely.
- Keep it away from pools, sprinklers, hoses, wet grass and standing water.
- Do not leave it exposed to rain or assume the IP rating protects every exterior finish equally.
- Dry the enclosure and handle promptly if they become damp, and follow B&O’s care guidance rather than immersing or rinsing the speaker.
Outdoor placement also changes sound. Open air removes some room reinforcement, while a wall, corner or table can add bass. The room-compensation and equalizer controls may help, but they do not make the speaker immune to placement effects.
Streaming, Bluetooth and multiroom options
The A5 supports dual-band Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth 5.3. Through the Bang & Olufsen app, B&O lists B&O Radio, TIDAL, Deezer and HomeMedia (UPnP). Other playback paths listed by the company are Beolink Multiroom, AirPlay, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and standard Bluetooth. Service availability and features can vary by region and may change over time.

Documentation for replacing a cover or handle supports a cautious serviceability advantage, but it does not prove that every repair is user-serviceable or that parts will always be in stock in every country. Confirm regional parts availability and authorized repair options before buying the A5 as a long-term investment.
