It can make sense if you regularly use its airport lounges, eligible prepaid hotel benefits and other credits—but those perks have conditions, and the issuer’s advertised benefit totals are not guaranteed savings. The key question is how much of the card’s value you would actually use.
What does the Amex Platinum cost, and how should you judge its value?
American Express lists an annual fee of $895 for the U.S. consumer Platinum Card. Its fee explainer, updated July 17, 2026, advertises more than $3,500 in annual benefit value; that is the issuer’s valuation, not a cash rebate or a result every cardmember will achieve. Individual credits may require enrollment, eligible purchases, particular booking channels or use of participating services. Assess the card against expenses and habits you already have. Count a credit only if you would use the eligible service or booking without changing your plans just to trigger it. Then weigh that usable value against the annual fee, your likely lounge visits and the rewards you can redeem in a way that matters to you. The available issuer sources do not establish a fixed cash value for Membership Rewards points.
Which airport lounges can you access?
As of January 2026, American Express advertises access to more than 1,550 lounges through its Global Lounge Collection, including Centurion Lounges, Priority Pass locations and select partner lounges. The headline count does not guarantee access to a particular lounge at a particular time. Check the current card benefits and lounge program terms against the airports and itineraries you use.

Centurion Lounges
U.S. Platinum Card Members receive complimentary access, subject to space availability. Entry generally requires a valid card and a same-day departing-flight boarding pass with a name matching the card. The terms generally allow entry within three hours of departure, with a separate rule for layovers. Guest fees may apply unless the member qualifies for complimentary guest access.
Delta Sky Clubs
The card includes 10 visits per eligible card each year when traveling on qualifying Delta flights or certain Delta-marketed flights. Delta Main Basic (Basic Economy) tickets are excluded. A visit covers access for up to 24 hours from the first entry, or a Grab and Go use, during qualifying travel. Check the terms for current location, itinerary and guest rules.

Priority Pass and partner lounges
Priority Pass requires enrollment through the Amex account or by calling the number on the card. Guest policies vary by participating lounge: some may allow up to two accompanying guests at no charge, while additional guests may incur program fees; lounges can also restrict or refuse guests. Other partner locations have their own access conditions.
How does the hotel credit work?
The card offers up to $300 in statement credits twice per calendar year—up to $600 annually—on eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel. The Hotel Collection requires a minimum two-night stay. A direct booking, a reservation through another site or a shorter Hotel Collection stay will not meet these stated conditions. American Express says the eligible collection includes more than 3,100 hotels; that figure does not mean every booking at those properties qualifies. Fine Hotels + Resorts property benefits
American Express describes benefits that can include daily breakfast for two, a $100 property credit for eligible charges, guaranteed 4 p.m. checkout, noon check-in when available and room upgrades when available. The issuer says average benefit value varies by property, room rate, availability and use. The timing and availability qualifications matter: not every listed benefit is guaranteed in every booking.
Does the card include hotel status?
Yes. American Express lists complimentary Leaders Club Sterling Status from The Leading Hotels of the World, Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status. Enrollment is required for status benefits, and the perks apply under each program’s current terms at participating properties.

How many points does the card earn?
American Express lists the following earning rates for the U.S. consumer card:

Who is likely to get useful value from the card?
The card is a more plausible fit for people whose existing routines line up with its rules: they visit airports with lounges they can actually enter, book qualifying prepaid hotels through Amex Travel, enroll in hotel programs and naturally use eligible statement credits. Someone who rarely flies, prefers direct hotel reservations or would need to spend extra to use credits may get much less from the benefits.
