The “7-year-old” Shield TV Pro is the 2019 NVIDIA model. It is still a compelling streamer if you use its USB ports, local-media support, audio passthrough, or AI upscaling. But it is not automatically better than newer devices: the right choice depends on your apps, video formats, home audio setup, and smart-home needs.
What makes the 2019 Shield TV Pro different?
NVIDIA’s specifications describe a Tegra X1+ device with 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, running Android 11 powered by Android TV. It supports 4K HDR playback up to 60 frames per second for supported codecs, Dolby Vision HDR, HDR10, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X passthrough. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance measurements. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV Pro specifications

Its physical connections are a practical distinction: the Pro has Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0b, and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. NVIDIA supports USB-expandable storage, which can be useful if you keep media locally or need room beyond the built-in 16 GB. The device also supports Plex, Chromecast 4K, and GeForce NOW. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhen AI upscaling helps—and when it does not
AI-enhanced upscaling is a headline feature, but it does not apply to every video. NVIDIA says it works on video above 480p and below 4K, at refresh rates of 30 Hz or less, in YUV color, and not during gaming. When AI upscaling is unavailable, the Shield falls back to enhanced upscaling. If most of what you watch is already 4K, or your sources do not meet those conditions, this feature may matter less. Why a newer streamer may not be a full replacement
Google TV Streamer
Google TV Streamer is a genuine newer alternative, particularly if you want a current Google TV interface, smart-home controls, Matter integration, and HDMI 2.1. In a comparison published November 7, 2024, Android Central described its regular interface use as smoother and listed 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. The same comparison said the Shield has stronger hardware, AI-assisted upscaling, and more rear ports. These are that publication’s dated editorial assessments, not results from a controlled test here. Android Central’s comparison, November 7, 2024
That comparison also noted that the Shield lacks AV1 decoding and consequently does not provide HDR in YouTube videos. If YouTube HDR or newer video-format support is important to you, check the current device and app specifications before choosing. The Shield’s strengths in local media, connections, and passthrough do not resolve that codec limitation.

Other categories of alternatives
NVIDIA’s comparison page names Apple TV, Fire TV Cube, and Roku Ultra as alternatives. That makes them relevant devices to investigate, but a vendor comparison page is not neutral evidence that their features, app support, or current availability match the Shield’s. NVIDIA’s device comparison page

Check app support separately from device support
A streamer’s ability to handle a format does not guarantee that every service will deliver it. NVIDIA says app-provider control means 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos availability can change, and account tier can affect access; its FAQ gives Netflix Premium as an example of a requirement for 4K. Verify the specific app, subscription tier, and device combination you use rather than relying on a general “supports 4K” or “supports Atmos” label. NVIDIA SHIELD TV FAQ

How to decide whether to keep or replace yours
- List the services and formats you actually use. Check current app support for 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos on the device and subscription you plan to use.
- Identify your media and audio needs. If you use Plex or local files, need DTS:X passthrough, or depend on USB storage, compare those exact capabilities before switching.
- Check your display and sources. AI upscaling is most relevant when you watch eligible sub-4K video under NVIDIA’s stated conditions; it is not a universal enhancement.
- Count the connections you need. Consider Ethernet, USB expansion, HDMI requirements, and any accessories that currently connect to the Shield.
- Prioritize daily interface and ecosystem features. If smart-home controls, Matter, HDMI 2.1, or a newer interface matter more than the Shield’s media and port advantages, a newer option may suit you better.
- Confirm the exact model and app behavior before buying. Specifications and service support can change; NVIDIA also cautions that app-provider format availability is subject to change.
NVIDIA’s October 2019 launch announcement said the Tegra X1+ offered “up to 25 percent more performance than its predecessor.” That is NVIDIA’s launch-era comparison with the prior generation—not a benchmark against today’s streamers. NVIDIA’s October 28, 2019 launch announcement
