Its main trade-off is size: at 3.3 pounds, it is heavier and takes up more room than the 13-inch Air. For an M3 owner whose current laptop already meets their needs, the upgrade is harder to justify unless the added display support or a specific configuration matters.
What the 15-inch M4 MacBook Air offers
Apple announced the M4 MacBook Air on March 5, 2025. The 15-inch model launched in the United States at $1,199, with availability beginning March 12, 2025. That is its historical launch price, not a confirmed current retail price. Apple offered it in sky blue, midnight, starlight and silver. Apple’s launch announcement describes the 15-inch option as providing more room for multitasking.

The machine uses Apple’s M4 chip, with a 10-core CPU and up to a 10-core GPU. It starts with 16GB of unified memory and can be configured with up to 32GB; Apple also specifies a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple describes this Air as fanless. The specification tells you there is no fan, but it does not establish noise or sustained-performance results for demanding workloads. Apple’s announcement has the launch configuration details.
Is the 15-inch screen worth the larger footprint?
The display measures 15.3 inches diagonally, with a 2880-by-1864 resolution and 224 pixels per inch. Apple lists 500 nits of brightness, support for one billion colors, P3 wide color and True Tone. It is an LED-backlit IPS Liquid Retina display, not OLED. These published specifications describe resolution and color features; they do not establish a measured contrast ratio. Apple’s technical specifications list the panel details.

The 15-inch model weighs 3.3 pounds and is 0.45 inches thick. Apple lists the 13-inch M4 Air at 2.7 pounds, a 0.6-pound difference. Choose the larger model if more on-screen room is useful for documents, side-by-side windows or a larger viewing area; choose the 13-inch version if reducing carry weight and footprint matters more.
How fast is M4, and should an M3 owner upgrade?
In Macworld’s 2025 review, its tested M4 configuration—with 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage—scored 23 percent higher than M3 in both single-core and multi-core Geekbench 6.4 tests, and 21 percent higher in Cinebench 2024. Macworld also reported a 46 percent Geekbench advantage over M2. Those are results from that publication’s tests, not a promise of the same gains in every application or workflow. Read Macworld’s review and test context.
The M4 is a more substantial prospect for someone moving from an Intel Mac or an older Apple-silicon Air than for someone whose M3 laptop is already sufficient. For an M3 owner, the clearest practical reason to consider the new model is support for two external displays while retaining the built-in screen. Otherwise, treat the benchmark improvement as a reason to compare—not as proof that an upgrade will transform everyday work.
Can it run two external monitors?
Yes. Apple specifies support for two external displays while the built-in display remains active. It lists these maximum combinations:
- Two external displays, each up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz.
- One external display up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 240Hz.
The laptop has two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports that support charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 4 up to 40 Gb/s and USB 4 up to 40 Gb/s. It also has MagSafe 3 and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. If you need more connections at the desk, a compatible hub or dock may be useful, but Apple’s listed ports and display support do not make one necessary for every setup. Check Apple’s specifications for the display-resolution and refresh-rate combinations.

Apple rates the 66.5-watt-hour battery for up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of wireless web use. These are Apple’s maximum figures under its stated test conditions, not independently measured results or a guarantee of everyday runtime; actual battery life depends on use and settings. Apple lists a 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W maximum and says fast charging is supported with a 70W-or-higher USB Power Delivery source. See Apple’s battery and power specifications.
Which configuration should you choose?
Apple’s stated starting point is 16GB of unified memory, with configurations up to 32GB. Think about the applications you expect to run and how long you intend to keep the laptop when deciding whether to configure more memory. Macworld’s reviewed unit had 16GB of memory and 512GB of storage, but that review configuration is not a recommendation for every workload. Apple’s cited launch details are in its announcement; the reviewed configuration is described in Macworld’s review.

Quick Recap
Who should buy the 15-inch M4 Air?
- Consider it if you want a larger built-in display, need two external monitors alongside that display, or are replacing an Intel or older Apple-silicon laptop.
- Consider the 13-inch M4 instead if a lighter, smaller laptop is more important than the extra screen area.
- Keep an M3 Air if it already handles your work and you have no concrete need for the M4’s display support or another configuration change.
- Compare other laptop options if your priority is sustained intensive work; the published facts here do not settle that comparison.
