A virus warning inside a webpage on your iPhone is usually a fraudulent ad, not proof that your phone is infected. Don’t tap its scan button, call a number it displays, install anything it recommends, or pay to remove the supposed virus. Apple documents two different genuine security alerts: a threat notification for people targeted by mercenary spyware, and an iOS alert that names an installed app containing malware.
First, identify where the warning appears
The source of the alert matters more than its alarming wording or use of Apple logos. Compare what you saw with these three cases:

Apple says webpage pop-ups offering prizes or claiming that the device has viruses or security problems are usually fraudulent ads meant to get people to download harmful software, reveal personal information, or pay money. Apple’s guidance on recognizing and avoiding scams explains this pattern.

Do not tap “scan,” call a support number shown in the page, install a suggested app or configuration profile, or enter an Apple Account password, verification code, or payment information. A page does not become trustworthy because it uses Apple branding, urgent language, or technical-sounding claims.

- Close the suspicious tab or browser if you can do so safely.
- If the page will not close, exit the browser and reopen it without restoring the suspicious page.
- Ignore any follow-up call or message urging you to pay, share a code, or install software. Contact a company through a channel you already know if you need to verify a request.
Apple advises treating unexpected requests for personal information or money with suspicion and contacting the company directly through a trusted route. It also says to hang up on unsolicited calls claiming to be Apple Support.
How to verify a genuine Apple threat notification
Apple says its threat notifications appear on the iPhone Lock Screen and in Settings. A banner also appears at the top of the Apple Account page after you sign in at account.apple.com. Type the address yourself or use a trusted bookmark rather than following a link in a suspicious message.
These notifications concern people who may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware. Apple says the vast majority of users will never be targeted by such attacks. An ordinary Safari pop-up claiming “your iPhone has a virus” is not this kind of notification.

Apple says its threat notifications never ask users by email or phone to click links, open files, install apps or profiles, or provide an Apple Account password or verification code. If a notification is present on your device, follow Apple’s guidance, including seeking expert assistance such as Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline and considering Lockdown Mode.
If iOS names an app as malware, delete that app
This alert is different from a web-page scare. Apple says iPhone and iPad regularly check installed third-party apps for malware it has identified. If an app triggers the alert, the device prevents it from opening and recommends deletion; Apple warns that using it could harm the device or compromise privacy.

- Choose Delete App in the alert, if that option is available.
- Alternatively, open Settings, select the named app, review the alert information, and delete the app.

If you already followed the pop-up’s instructions
You entered an Apple Account password or personal details
Change your Apple Account password immediately and make sure two-factor authentication is enabled. If someone claiming to provide support asked you for information, money, or a verification code, stop communicating through that contact and reach the company directly using a known channel.

You subscribed to unwanted calendar events
If you received a suspicious invitation in Mail or Calendar, Apple says you can report it as Junk in iCloud. If you accidentally added a spam calendar subscription, delete that subscription.
You received a suspicious text
Use the reporting option appropriate to your country and mobile carrier. Apple’s scam guidance describes reporting routes, which can vary by region.

Keep your iPhone’s protections current
Apple calls keeping software up to date the single most important step for maintaining the security of its products. Check for updates on the iPhone itself at Settings > General > Software Update; the update offered depends on your model and what is currently available.
Apple’s web-attack guidance, published April 2, 2026, says updated devices running iOS 15 through iOS 26 are protected against the reported attacks, gives separate advice for older devices, and notes that Safari’s Apple Safe Browsing is on by default and blocks domains identified in those attacks. Apple’s iOS 26.7 security page lists a release date of September 14, 2026 and availability for iPhone 11 and later. It describes fixes in WebKit and other system components. Security fixes address real vulnerabilities; their existence does not mean a browser pop-up proves your iPhone is infected. Check Apple’s iOS 26.7 security-content page for the release details.
