Is Telenet Coax Fiber? What HFC and FTTH Actually Mean

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Partly—but not in the sense of fiber all the way to your home. Telenet’s HFC network uses both fiber and coaxial cable; the coax segment remains part of the connection to customers on that network. That makes it different from FTTH, or fiber to the home. The available sources establish this technical distinction and show that Belgium’s telecom regulator classifies Telenet’s fixed technology as cable. They do not establish a ruling that Telenet is legally forbidden to use the word “fiber.”

What is the difference between Telenet HFC and FTTH?

HFC uses fiber and coax

HFC stands for Hybrid Fiber Coaxial. In plain terms, the network uses optical fiber for part of the route and coaxial cable for the remaining access segment. BIPT, Belgium’s Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications, describes HFC as a fixed broadband network made up of fiber and coax cables in the last mile. Telenet’s own explanation likewise distinguishes HFC from FTTH. BIPT’s HFC definition and Telenet’s network explanation set out the terminology.

FTTH brings fiber to the home

FTTH means “fiber to the home”: the fiber connection reaches the home rather than relying on coax for the final segment. Telenet says Wyre, its infrastructure company with Fluvius, brings the last meters of fiber to a home for FTTH. Whether that option is available depends on the specific address. Telenet’s FTTH information describes the rollout.

What does Telenet’s 95% fiber figure mean?

Telenet says its HFC network is 95% fiber and 5% coax, describing the makeup of the network—not saying that fiber reaches 95% of the way into every customer’s home, or that 95% of homes have FTTH. The remaining coax segment is why an HFC connection is not the same as fiber to the home. The 95/5 figure is Telenet’s own description on its residential network page, not a measurement published by BIPT.

How BIPT classifies Telenet’s fixed network

BIPT’s list of fixed and convergent operators identifies Telenet’s associated fixed technology as cable. The list was last updated on 23 June 2026. That classification is consistent with describing an HFC service as cable even though fiber is used within the network. It does not, by itself, establish a legal finding about which words Telenet may use in advertising. See BIPT’s operator list.

What speeds does Telenet advertise?

On its residential network page, Telenet gives theoretical maximum speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps for HFC and up to 10 Gbps for FTTH. These are provider-stated maximums, not a promise of the speed available to every household. The actual offer depends on address and technical conditions; check the details for the service available at your home on Telenet’s network page.

How to check which connection is available at your address

  1. Check your address using BIPT’s Landline Atlas, which directs users to its FTTH map to check fiber availability at a specific address.

  2. Check Telenet’s availability information for the same address. Do not infer that FTTH is available from Telenet’s network-wide 95% fiber figure.

Does “not allowed to call coax fiber” describe a regulator ruling?

Not on the evidence cited here. The official pages establish that HFC combines fiber and coax, that FTTH brings fiber to the home, and that BIPT lists Telenet’s fixed technology as cable. They do not establish a court judgment, regulator order, or advertising prohibition preventing Telenet from using the word “fiber.” The defensible distinction is technical: fiber is part of Telenet’s HFC network, but a connection using coax for the final segment is not FTTH.
