It is not a modern high-frame-rate upgrade: Bandai Namco lists the console versions at 30 FPS. Also note that the console release contains the original game, not its sequel, and Nintendo currently marks the Switch version unsupported on Switch 2 because of progression problems.
“Definitive Edition” is not the official name of this release; Bandai Namco calls it Tales of Symphonia Remastered.

- FULLY RESTORED - Features graphically enhanced and improved gameplay
- THRILLING BATTLES - Play with up to 3 friends in local co-op mode to fight powerful opponents in real-time battles - Combine hundreds of special attacks and magic spells
- A 3D MASTERPIECE - Watch stunning anime cutscenes and become absorbed in endearing eel-shaded characters designed by renowned artist Kosuke Fujishima
Is it a good fit for a beginner?
It is a reasonable pick if you are new to the series and want a classic, story-led RPG whose battles happen in real time rather than through a purely turn-based menu system. Its local co-op is a useful option if you want to play alongside friends. Those are judgments based on the game’s published features, not a promise that every newcomer will find its combat or pacing easy.
- Consider it if: you like character-driven fantasy stories, cel-shaded art, real-time combat, or local multiplayer.
- Think twice if: you want a high-frame-rate remaster, expect the sequel to be included, or need confirmed Switch 2 compatibility.
What does the remaster include?
The console release is a remaster of the original Tales of Symphonia. It does not include Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Bandai Namco says it does carry forward material from Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, including costumes, Compound Unison Attacks, Mystic Artes previously available only in the Japan-only PS2 version, two opening themes, and a choice of Japanese or English voice acting. These frame-rate and resolution figures are Bandai Namco’s specifications, not independent performance measurements. Nintendo’s current Canadian store listing gives a 10.4 GB download size, while the publisher’s 2023 Q&A lists 11 GB for console storage; these figures come from different sources and may describe different measures or versions. Check the store page for the platform and region you intend to use.
Switch 2: check the current compatibility notice
Nintendo of Canada’s current listing marks the Switch game “Unsupported – Problems with game progression have been found.” Bandai Namco Europe published Switch version 1.31 patch notes on 18 October 2023 for an update planned for 19 October, saying it would fix an issue interfering with game progression. That dated patch note does not establish that Switch 2 compatibility is now resolved or that Nintendo’s warning refers to the same issue.
