Is T-Mobile Still the Un-carrier? What John Legere’s Legacy Says About Today

There is a real tension between John Legere’s promise of price stability and T-Mobile’s later price increases for some customers on legacy plans. But the available evidence does not establish what Legere feels about those changes, and it does not show that T-Mobile has undone “almost everything” he stood for.

What did John Legere promise about T-Mobile prices?

In testimony to the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce on February 13, 2019, then-CEO John Legere said, “want to reiterate, unequivocally, that New T-Mobile rates are NOT going to go up.” The statement was made in the context of the proposed T-Mobile–Sprint merger and its commitments; it should not be read as proof that every plan, customer, or price would remain unchanged indefinitely. Legere’s congressional testimony is the relevant context for the quote.

What changed for some legacy-plan customers?

In May 2024, T-Mobile announced price increases affecting some customers on legacy plans. The changes renewed scrutiny of the company’s earlier Un-contract and price-stability messaging, but they did not apply to every customer or every current plan. The key comparison is between Legere’s merger-era statement about “New T-Mobile rates” and later increases on a subset of legacy plans—not a blanket guarantee that no T-Mobile price could ever change. Coverage of the 2024 legacy-plan changes describes the affected plans and customer response.

Does T-Mobile’s customer-service approach show a break with Legere’s style?

Legere made customer advocacy central to T-Mobile’s public identity. Under CEO Mike Sievert, the company has also discussed changing how customers get help. In a December 22, 2024 interview, TIME reported that Sievert described an aspiration to reduce person-to-person problem-solving and customer-service interactions by 75% within three years. That figure was a stated target, not a verified result. Reducing human interactions could reflect more self-service or automation; without outcome data, it does not by itself establish that customers are receiving worse support. TIME’s interview with Sievert provides his framing.

What do T-Mobile’s business results tell us—and what don’t they?

T-Mobile reported 6.1 million postpaid net customer additions and $66.2 billion in service revenue for 2024. Those company-reported results show commercial growth and scale. They do not measure whether customers trust the company, believe it still delivers value, or think it has kept faith with Legere-era promises. Subscriber additions and revenue are not substitutes for customer-satisfaction evidence. T-Mobile’s 2024 results announcement reports the figures.

The company’s 2024 SEC filing describes its sales and service channels as well as merger-related restructuring, including retail-store and facility leases. That is useful operating context, but the filing alone does not prove that customer access or service quality declined. T-Mobile’s 2024 annual filing details those operations and leases.

Is T-Mobile still the Un-carrier?

T-Mobile’s own history presents the Un-carrier identity as a challenger approach associated with simpler offers and changes to traditional wireless practices. That account helps explain the brand Legere built, but it is the company’s description of its own history, not independent proof of how consistently the strategy has shaped later decisions. T-Mobile’s history of the Un-carrier lays out its milestones.

On the evidence available, the price increases for some legacy-plan customers create a credible conflict with the old price-stability rhetoric. The customer-service target and strong business results add context, but neither settles whether T-Mobile has abandoned Legere’s broader approach. The claim that the company reversed “almost everything” goes further than these facts support.

What can we say about how Legere feels?

His current reaction is unknown. The public testimony establishes what Legere said in 2019 about rates in the merger context; the later reporting establishes that some legacy-plan customers faced increases. Neither tells us what he privately thinks now, and no direct, current statement from him about the changes or T-Mobile’s post-Legere direction is established by the cited sources.
