The purchase decision is also easy to misunderstand: Squadron 42 is the planned single-player campaign set in the same universe as Star Citizen, not the persistent online universe itself. If you already backed the project, inspect the exact entitlement in your Roberts Space Industries account before buying anything. If you are a new buyer, do not assume that a Star Citizen package includes Squadron 42.

What Squadron 42 is—and what it is not
Squadron 42 is presented as a cinematic, single-player space adventure. The Steam listing describes enlisting in the United Empire of Earth Navy as a rookie and fighting alongside a crew. Its advertised scope combines spacecraft combat and flight with on-foot first-person combat, crew life and exploration across ships, stations and outposts.
That description comes from the publisher’s store listing. It explains the intended product, not a hands-on assessment of mission quality, performance or campaign length. The game has not released, so those parts cannot be verified through independent play reports yet.

Squadron 42 is separate from Star Citizen’s persistent online universe. The two projects share a setting, but they are different products. RSI’s package policy has historically treated the campaign and the online universe as separately purchasable modules. Older backers may have entitlements that do not match today’s packages, which is why the item list on your own account matters more than a general package description.

The Steam maturity note warns of strong language, intense violence, blood and gore. That content rating is relevant if you are buying for a younger player or prefer a less graphic campaign.
Can you play it now?
No. RSI support says Squadron 42 remains in development and is not downloadable. The stated future rule is that an RSI account with a qualifying pledge can download and play after development, testing and release are complete. Owning an entitlement therefore establishes potential future access; it does not provide a playable build today.

Its current listing gives a planned release window of Q2 2027. “Q2” means the second calendar quarter, April through June, but no day is promised. A planned window can move, especially for an unreleased project. PC Gamer reported that an earlier internal target was Q4 2026 around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo and that the studio selected Q2 2027 partly in light of anticipated attention around Grand Theft Auto VI. That report is context, not a guarantee that Q2 2027 will hold.
What the release status means for a buyer
- You cannot buy a normal, finished, play-now PC release through the current Steam listing.
- You should not treat a pledge as access to an early campaign build unless an official listing explicitly says so.
- There is no reliable launch-day schedule, final price or final hardware profile yet.
- Any purchase made now is a bet on future delivery and on the final product matching its advertised direction.
What exactly does a purchase include?
Package contents have changed over the project’s lifetime. RSI’s 2016 package-split announcement described Star Citizen as the persistent universe and Squadron 42 as the single-player campaign, with the two available as separate modules for new packages after the split. That policy is historical; it should not be read as a current price list or as proof that every modern package has the same contents.

RSI’s current getting-started guidance distinguishes the live online Star Citizen environment from the still-in-development Squadron 42 campaign. It notes that Star Citizen packages generally include a ship, the game and starter items, while a Squadron 42 standalone pledge is an exception. Because package terms and entitlements can change, read the exact contents of the pledge you are considering.
Check an existing pledge before spending more
- Sign in to the Roberts Space Industries account you used for backing or purchasing.
- Open the account’s Hangar and inspect the individual pledge or entitlement entries.
- Look specifically for wording that identifies Squadron 42, rather than assuming that a ship package or a Star Citizen game package contains it.
- Keep a record of the account that owns the entitlement. The future download rule applies to the RSI account holding the qualifying pledge.
- If the entry is unclear, use RSI’s current support documentation before buying a second package.
Do not rely on a reseller’s abbreviated title, an old forum post or a memory of a package bought years ago. Older backers can retain legacy entitlements, and the same broad package name may not describe the same contents across different dates.

Do not buy a graphics card solely because it has the listed VRAM amount. The requirements establish compatibility targets, not tested frame rates, resolution, graphics presets or loading times. Final requirements can rise or fall as development and optimization continue. Check the official Steam page again near release before upgrading a PC.
Is it worth buying now?
For most readers, no—not if “buying” means obtaining a game you can install and play immediately. The current official information supports a wait-and-see decision because the game is unavailable, its release is only planned, its price is not established and there are no independent reviews to confirm quality or performance.

Wait if any of these describe you
- You want a playable campaign this week.
- You need a firm release date before committing money.
- You want independent testing of frame rates, bugs, mission variety and campaign length.
- You need a known regional price or a clear refund decision.
- You are unwilling to upgrade hardware for a game whose final requirements are not set.
- You are unsure whether you want a standalone campaign or the persistent online experience.
Reasons to revisit the purchase after launch
It may become a sensible purchase after release if the finished game delivers the advertised combination of ship combat, on-foot combat, exploration and cinematic storytelling, and if reviews confirm acceptable performance on your PC. At that point you can compare the final price with the amount of content, verify the package contents and use real technical reports rather than minimum-spec speculation.
Those are decision criteria, not predictions about the final quality. The unreleased status means campaign length, mission variety, technical stability and value remain unresolved.
Price and value: what is known and what is not
No current playable retail price is established by the official Steam listing or RSI support pages. Do not treat an old pledge price as a current offer.

Value cannot be judged from a historical number alone. A fair assessment requires the final price, the delivered campaign, technical performance, support policy and the opportunity cost of buying before launch. None of those factors is complete enough to support a confident value verdict today.

The historical package policy said the games shared a universe and client at that time, and that campaign performance could affect a player’s persistent-universe career. Those details came from the 2016 policy and should not be assumed to describe every current feature, edition or account interaction.

- Wait for independent coverage if quality matters. Look for reviews that test campaign performance and stability on hardware similar to yours.

If you are a new buyer
Wait. There is no playable release, no confirmed current price and no independent review record. Reassess when the official listing provides a real purchase and download path.
If you are an existing backer
Check your RSI Hangar before paying again. A qualifying pledge is intended to provide future access after development, testing and release, but the account and entitlement must be the ones associated with the pledge.
If you want Star Citizen’s online universe
Evaluate that product on its own terms. Do not purchase an online package solely to obtain Squadron 42 unless the current package explicitly lists the campaign.
If you are willing to wait for a story-driven space game
Keep Squadron 42 on a watch list and reassess after launch. The right time to judge value is when price, requirements, availability, reviews and performance data are all visible together.
