Short answer: Squadron 42 is not downloadable or playable yet. Roberts Space Industries (RSI) says owners of a pledge that contains the game will be able to download it after development, testing and release. The latest announced target is Q2 2027, but that is a window, not a guaranteed date. Before spending money, check your RSI account’s My Hangar; you may already have access through an older pledge. New buyers should wait for confirmed pricing and edition details unless they are comfortable paying for an unreleased game with an uncertain schedule.
The buying verdict in one minute
There is no current download, finished product or confirmed retail-edition lineup to evaluate. RSI support’s February 4, 2026 status update says: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” An account that owns a pledge containing Squadron 42 is expected to receive download access after the game is completed, tested and released.

Chris Roberts, RSI chairman, later announced a Q2 2027 target. A PC Gamer report dated August 27, 2026 quoted his explanation that the team reviewed release windows at the start of 2027 and decided that “Q2 provides a better time for Squadron 42 to release.” The statement does not provide a day, and a target window can move.

Can you play or download Squadron 42 now?
No. The game is not currently available for download. RSI’s support article, last updated February 4, 2026, describes it as still in development and says it is not available for download.
The support wording also explains the intended ownership sequence: an account with a pledge containing Squadron 42 should gain download and play access once development is complete, testing is finished and the game has been released. Owning a pledge therefore represents a future entitlement, not immediate access to a build.

Nothing in the August 2026 announcement says that the game had become downloadable. Until RSI changes the account or store status, treat the product as unreleased.
When is Squadron 42 coming out?
The latest announced target is the second quarter of 2027 (Q2 2027). This came from Roberts’ August 2026 release update, as reported by PC Gamer. The report says the team considered windows at the beginning of 2027, selected Q2, and planned further announcements before giving a specific date.
Q2 covers April through June; it is not a launch-day promise. Do not treat it as a reservation, delivery guarantee or proof that a particular edition will ship on a particular date. A sensible buyer should be able to tolerate another schedule change without feeling trapped by the purchase.

For planning purposes, separate three milestones:
- Development completion: The work must be finished before owners can download the game.
- Testing: RSI says testing must occur before release access is provided.
- Release: The Q2 2027 target is the announced window for this milestone, not a confirmed day.
How to check whether you already own Squadron 42
Checking the account is the most important step for anyone who has backed Star Citizen or purchased an older package. Do this before placing a second order.

- Sign in to your RSI account.
- Open My Hangar, the account area that lists your pledges and other account-held items.
- Expand each relevant pledge so its individual contents are visible.
- Look for an entitlement that explicitly names Squadron 42.
- Record whether it appears as a standalone component, part of a combined package or an add-on attached to another pledge.
RSI’s current FAQ specifically instructs account holders to expand an item in My Hangar to see what a particular pledge contains. Do not infer ownership from a ship name, insurance entry, UEC balance or a general Star Citizen label; those are separate pledge contents.
If the game is not explicitly listed, do not assume that an old purchase includes it. Contact RSI support or wait for an official listing that clearly identifies the entitlement rather than paying based on a package title alone.
Does a Star Citizen package automatically include Squadron 42?
No automatic inclusion can be assumed. The answer depends on the exact pledge and when it was purchased.
RSI’s February 2016 package-split notice said existing backers retained both the persistent Star Citizen universe and Squadron 42. It also said that packages sold after February 14, 2016 could select one module separately or add the other. At that time, both components were accessed through the same client.
That notice is historical context, not a guarantee that today’s packages use the same rules. RSI’s current FAQ describes Star Citizen game packages as including a digital copy of Star Citizen, a ship and other assets. That general description does not establish that a current Star Citizen package contains the single-player game.

The reliable test is the pledge detail in your account or an official listing that names Squadron 42. A listing that says only “Star Citizen,” even if it includes a ship and digital items, is not evidence of Squadron 42 ownership.
What editions and extras are confirmed?
There are no confirmed current Squadron 42 retail editions in the available official material. No standard edition, deluxe edition, collector edition, physical package, digital bonuses, soundtrack, art book or other final extras are confirmed in the available official material.
| Purchase detail | Status as of October 13, 2026 | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Downloadable game | Not available; RSI says it remains in development. | Do not buy expecting immediate play. |
| Standalone Squadron 42 offer | Current terms are not established in the available material. | Wait for an official listing that names the game. |
| Star Citizen bundle | Existing pledges vary; a general Star Citizen package description does not prove inclusion. | Expand the pledge in My Hangar. |
| Standard versus collector editions | Not stated. | Compare only once RSI publishes the lineup. |
| Physical items | Not stated. | Do not pay a premium for unconfirmed extras. |
| Digital bonuses | Not stated for a future Squadron 42 retail edition. | Rely on the itemized official listing. |
| Platform and access terms | Future terms are not confirmed in the available material. | Check the official offer before purchase. |
RSI’s FAQ gives examples of pledge items such as insurance, UEC, ships and a manual. Those examples explain how pledge contents can be itemized; they do not define what a future Squadron 42 edition will include.
What did Squadron 42 cost historically?
RSI’s 2016 package-split notice listed $45 for either component and a $15 add-on for the other component at that time. The notice explicitly said prices were subject to change.
Those figures are historical package-split prices, not a current quote. They should not be used to judge whether a new offer is cheap, expensive or fairly priced in 2026. No current price is established in the available sources.
When a new offer appears, compare the price only with the contents and access terms shown on that live listing. An old screenshot, forum post or resale description cannot establish today’s price or entitlement.

Who might consider buying before release?
Patient single-player space-game fans
A buyer who specifically wants a story-driven, single-player space game may decide that securing a future entitlement is worthwhile, provided the buyer accepts the wait and the possibility of schedule changes. This is a preference-based decision, not a recommendation that the final game has already proved its quality; the product is not playable yet.
Recommended Free Tools
Existing backers
Existing backers should investigate rather than repurchase. An older pledge may already contain Squadron 42, and the account’s itemized contents are more reliable than memory about what a package used to promise.
People who need a game now
Anyone looking for something to download and play immediately should not buy Squadron 42 for that purpose. The current status does not support immediate access.
Collectors and edition shoppers
Collectors should wait. There is no confirmed standard-versus-collector lineup or list of physical and digital extras to compare. Paying now on the assumption that a particular premium package will exist is speculation.
Who should wait?
- Budget-conscious buyers: The current price is not established, so you cannot make a reliable value comparison.
- Players with a firm deadline: Q2 2027 is a target window, not a guaranteed date.
- Buyers who want a complete product review: There is no released version to test, and hands-on performance or campaign assessments would be premature.
- People unsure whether they own it: Resolve the account question first; duplicate pledges create avoidable expense.
- Anyone expecting a Star Citizen bundle to be self-explanatory: Package rules have changed over time, so the exact pledge contents matter.
A practical decision framework
| Your situation | Most sensible action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You find “Squadron 42” in My Hangar. | Do not buy another copy. | Your account already shows the relevant future entitlement. |
| Your pledge lists Star Citizen but not Squadron 42. | Do not assume inclusion; verify with RSI or await a clear offer. | The modules can be separate, and current package contents vary. |
| You want to play immediately. | Wait. | The game is not downloadable. |
| You are comfortable waiting through Q2 2027 or longer. | Consider a purchase only after checking the live price and terms. | The target is still a window, and current editions are unresolved. |
| You want a collector package or physical goods. | Wait for an official edition announcement. | No such lineup is confirmed. |
| You are comparing a new bundle with an old pledge. | Compare itemized contents, access and price side by side. | Historical package assumptions are not reliable for a current purchase. |
What to compare when official editions appear
Once RSI publishes a live offer, use the same checklist for every option rather than relying on names such as “premium” or “ultimate.”
- Ownership scope: Does the offer contain Squadron 42 itself, Star Citizen itself, or both?
- Access method: Is the entitlement attached to an RSI account, and what platform or client is specified?
- Included content: List every confirmed digital or physical item; ignore marketing language that is not itemized.
- Price and currency: Record the current amount shown by RSI, including any regional qualification.
- Release terms: Confirm whether the listing describes a future entitlement and how it addresses release timing.
- Account status: Compare the new offer with the contents already shown in My Hangar to avoid buying a duplicate.
This process separates confirmed value from assumptions. It also makes a future standard-versus-collector comparison possible without treating historical prices or package names as current facts.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating the Q2 2027 target as a fixed launch date
Fix: Plan around a window and accept that RSI may announce a specific date later or change the timing.
Mistake: expecting a download after checkout
Fix: Read the listing as a future entitlement until RSI changes the availability status. The support article says development and testing must be completed first.
Mistake: using the 2016 price as a current bargain benchmark
Fix: Treat $45 and $15 as dated historical figures only. Wait for the live price.
Mistake: assuming every Star Citizen package contains the campaign
Fix: Expand the specific pledge in My Hangar and look for the Squadron 42 name.
Mistake: buying based on an unconfirmed collector promise
Fix: Require an official itemized edition listing before paying for extras.
Mistake: overlooking an existing entitlement
Fix: Search every relevant pledge, including older packages and add-ons, before making a new purchase.
What is actually known about ownership?
The strongest established ownership rule is simple: an account must have a pledge that contains Squadron 42. RSI says that account will be able to download and play after development, testing and release. The specific contents of an individual pledge are visible by expanding it in My Hangar.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Package history explains why two people who paid for similarly named products may have different entitlements. Existing backers were covered by the 2016 split notice, while later packages could separate the modules or add one to the other. That history is useful when interpreting an old account, but it does not replace checking the actual item record.
Bottom line for a 2026 buyer
Squadron 42 is a future purchase, not a playable product today. The announced Q2 2027 window gives a planning reference, but no firm launch date, current price or confirmed edition lineup is available in the established information. Existing backers should check My Hangar first. New buyers should wait for a clearly identified official offer unless they deliberately accept an unreleased game, unresolved edition terms and schedule uncertainty in exchange for a future entitlement.
