You do not need to buy Star Citizen to own Squadron 42. RSI has offered Squadron 42 as a standalone pledge, separate from packages that include Star Citizen. The important catch is availability: RSI says Squadron 42 is still in development and is not currently available to download or play. An account that owns a qualifying Squadron 42 pledge is expected to receive access after development is complete, testing is finished, and the game is released.
The short answer
Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are separate products set in the same fictional universe. Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign; Star Citizen is the persistent-universe game. You can choose one without automatically buying the other.

That distinction does not mean Squadron 42 is playable today. RSI’s support article “Where can I download Squadron 42?” was updated February 4, 2026, and states that the game is “currently in development and is not available for download.” RSI says owners of a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play it only after development is completed, the game has been tested, and it has been released. The support page does not state a release date.
What Squadron 42 and Star Citizen actually are
Squadron 42 is the single-player campaign
Squadron 42 is designed as a cinematic, story-driven campaign that you play on your own. Its product identity is the campaign module rather than access to the continuously evolving online universe. Buying a Squadron 42 pledge is therefore aimed at someone who wants that standalone narrative experience when it becomes available.

Star Citizen is the persistent-universe module
Star Citizen is the online persistent-universe game. It is the part of the product family associated with an ongoing shared game world, ships and other in-game package items. RSI’s onboarding material describes packages containing Star Citizen as including at least one ship and additional items, while identifying the Squadron 42 standalone pledge as an exception.
They share a setting, not a purchase requirement
RSI’s February 9, 2016 “Package Split Information” announcement described Squadron 42 as the single-player campaign and “Star Citizen digital download” as the Persistent Universe module. The announcement said customers could choose either module and optionally add the other. That page explains the product separation, but its package prices are historical and should not be treated as current prices.
The shared universe can make the names look like one game with two mandatory parts. They are better understood as two related modules. Owning one does not, by itself, prove that your account owns the other.

No. A standalone Squadron 42 pledge does not automatically include Star Citizen. Conversely, a package that contains Star Citizen is not automatically evidence that it contains Squadron 42. The exact contents depend on the pledge recorded on your RSI account.
RSI’s “Get Started: Checklist,” updated April 16, 2026, specifically calls out the Squadron 42 standalone pledge as an exception to the usual game-package description. RSI’s launcher instructions, updated July 27, 2026, likewise say that, except for the Squadron 42 standalone pledge, other game packages contain Star Citizen and a ship.

Those descriptions explain the general product structure, not the contents of every historical purchase, upgrade or promotional package. If you already bought something years ago, inspect the account itself rather than relying on the package name or on a third-party description.
How to check what your RSI account owns
Check ownership before buying another pledge. This avoids paying twice for a module you already have and prevents assuming that a Star Citizen package includes Squadron 42.

- Sign in to the RSI account you used for the original purchase.
- Open the account’s pledge or package list and expand the individual item you are considering.
- Look for an explicit Squadron 42 entitlement, such as a Squadron 42 standalone pledge or a package that lists Squadron 42 by name.
- Check separately for Star Citizen or Persistent Universe access. Do not treat a ship listing alone as proof that Squadron 42 is included.
- Save the package name and contents before purchasing an upgrade or second pledge, especially if your account contains several older transactions.
If the account page is ambiguous, use RSI account support before buying. The official material establishes that the products can be separated, but it does not guarantee what any particular account currently owns.
Can you download or play Squadron 42 now?
According to RSI’s current support information, no. The page titled “Where can I download Squadron 42?” says the game is still in development and is not available for download. RSI’s onboarding checklist repeats that the single-player campaign is not yet available.
There is no confirmed release date in the reviewed support material. Do not interpret a pledge as a present-day game license that can be installed immediately. At this stage, the pledge records your entitlement for a future release rather than supplying a playable download.

RSI’s stated sequence is specific: development must be completed, the game must be tested, and it must be released. Only after those conditions does RSI say an account with a pledge containing Squadron 42 can download and start playing. A trailer, event announcement or package listing does not replace that availability statement.

Use the table as a decision guide, not as a substitute for reading the itemized contents of your account. Package names and offerings can change, and older pledges may not match current descriptions.
PC requirements to plan for
RSI’s “Game and Launcher Requirements” page, updated December 17, 2025, lists the following requirements for its PC games, including Squadron 42. These are RSI’s published requirements, not independent performance measurements, and they may change before release.

The page does not establish a final Squadron 42 install size, a final graphics preset target or a performance frame-rate guarantee. Treat the 150+ GB SSD figure as the current published planning requirement and recheck RSI’s page before installing or upgrading hardware.
What to do if your PC lacks SSD space
An SSD upgrade is relevant only if your computer cannot meet the published capacity requirement. RSI does not recommend a particular SSD model or a mandatory 1 TB capacity. Before purchasing any drive, identify the computer’s interface (such as SATA or an M.2 slot), physical form factor, motherboard support and an available connector. A drive that has enough capacity can still be incompatible with the machine.

Leave headroom beyond the listed minimum for the operating system, launcher files, patches and the pagefile. Installing on a slower hard disk may also produce a different experience from the one RSI’s SSD-based requirement assumes, but RSI’s page does not provide independent performance testing.

Assuming “Star Citizen” is required for Squadron 42
This is the central misunderstanding. RSI has described a Squadron 42 standalone pledge and a separate Star Citizen module. You can own the campaign without buying the persistent-universe game.
Assuming a Squadron 42 pledge is playable immediately
A pledge does not provide a current download while the game remains in development. The official support wording ties access to completion, testing and release, with no release date stated on the reviewed page.
Assuming every package has the same contents
Package contents vary. RSI’s checklist says most game packages include Star Citizen, a ship and additional items, while the Squadron 42 standalone pledge is an exception. Read the itemized contents of your own account.

The 2016 package-split announcement is useful for understanding the separation, but its quoted prices are historical. Current pledge prices and availability should be checked on RSI at the time you buy.

Planning an installation from outdated requirements
Operating-system, CPU, graphics and storage requirements can change before release. The December 17, 2025 requirements page is the published reference for the figures above; verify the latest version before spending money on an upgrade.
What happens when Squadron 42 is released?
RSI’s current support guidance indicates that an account with a pledge containing Squadron 42 will be able to download and play after the game has completed development, passed testing and been released. That entitlement is tied to the account and pledge, so retaining access to the correct RSI account is important.
You should not need Star Citizen merely to activate the campaign if your account has the standalone Squadron 42 entitlement. You may choose to buy Star Citizen separately for its persistent-universe gameplay, but that is an additional product decision rather than a prerequisite established by RSI’s product descriptions.

Availability, release timing, pledge contents and system requirements are all changeable. Before purchasing or upgrading, check these RSI references:
- The “Where can I download Squadron 42?” support article for current availability and release conditions.
- The “Get Started: Checklist” for the distinction between the standalone campaign pledge and packages containing Star Citizen.
- The launcher instructions for current account and installation guidance.
- The “Game and Launcher Requirements” page for the latest Windows, CPU, graphics, RAM and SSD requirements.
As of the latest dates cited above, the conclusion is straightforward: Squadron 42 is a separately ownable single-player game, Star Citizen is optional, and Squadron 42 itself is not yet downloadable.
