The purchase can still make sense for someone who wants the single-player stealth campaign, owns the game for collection purposes, or accepts an unverified legacy-PC experience. It is not a sound co-op purchase for two friends expecting to install the game and play together online.

The short answer for a co-op buyer
If cooperative play is the reason you are considering Splinter Cell: Double Agent on PC, skip this purchase. The current publisher and storefront notices are unusually clear: the game’s online features are unsupported, and its multiplayer and co-op modes are nonfunctional. That is a service-status statement, not merely a warning that matchmaking may be quiet or difficult to find.
This distinction matters. A game with a small player base might still let two owners connect directly. A game whose online functions are listed as no longer functional does not offer that dependable path. You should not pay for the PC edition assuming that a friend invite, a server browser, or an in-game co-op challenge will work.

What the current official listings say
Ubisoft’s PC product page
Ubisoft identifies the PC release as a September 1, 2006 game and currently displays this notice: “Online features for this game are no longer supported. Multiplayer and co-op modes are no longer functional.” The same page identifies Ubisoft as publisher, lists the PC platform, and says the PC content is added to Ubisoft Connect.
Steam’s store warning
Steam repeats the same online-service warning on its listing. Because the notice appears on both the publisher’s page and the storefront where many PC buyers encounter the game, it should be treated as the controlling buying fact rather than as an isolated user report.
What those notices do—and do not—establish
- They establish that supported online multiplayer and co-op are not currently functional.
- They do not establish that the single-player campaign is unusable.
- They do not establish present-day frame rates, crash frequency, display scaling, controller behavior, or compatibility with a particular computer.
- They do not establish a current price, stock level, regional availability, refund outcome, or the quality of any community-made workaround.
The original PC version did advertise co-op
The original PC manual describes Internet play through DemonWare and includes co-op challenges. That documentation confirms that cooperative play was part of the release design in 2006. It does not show that the underlying service still exists or that the mode can be restored reliably now.

When an old manual and a current store page appear to conflict, they are answering different questions. The manual answers, “What did this edition ship with?” The current listings answer, “What online functions can a buyer reasonably expect today?” For a purchase decision, the current status notice takes priority.
Choose your intended use before buying
The same disc or digital license can have very different value depending on what you want to do with it. Use the table below to separate a realistic purchase from a frustrating one.

PC requirements and account friction
Operating system and launcher
Ubisoft’s current PC listing names Windows 10 and Windows 11 and requires a Ubisoft account plus the Ubisoft Connect launcher. Steam’s listing includes legacy requirements and says that its client supports Windows 10 and later. These statements describe the listed platform and account path; they are not a guarantee that every modern Windows configuration will run the game perfectly.

What to verify before paying
- Confirm the edition. Make sure the listing is the PC release, not a console version or a package whose description omits the platform.
- Check the live store page. Read the current online-service warning, the supported operating-system text, and any regional purchase restrictions shown for your account.
- Confirm account access. You need a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect for the PC content identified by Ubisoft. If you avoid additional launchers or account linking, that requirement may be a deal-breaker even for solo play.
- Check your own machine. The available evidence does not provide a modern compatibility test. Verify that your Windows installation, graphics drivers, display setup, input devices, and security software can accommodate a 2006 title before assuming a smooth launch.
- Keep the return window in mind. Buy only where the seller clearly states its refund terms. A refund policy is especially important for legacy software because the official pages do not promise performance on your particular hardware.
What you can expect from the co-op mode
It is not a matchmaking problem
There is a practical difference between “nobody is online” and “the mode is no longer functional.” In the first case, a direct invitation or a coordinated session might still work. In the second, the service itself is not supported. The current notices place this game in the second category.
Do not assume private sessions will bypass the notice
A friend-only lobby, a port-forwarding change, or a different network connection cannot be presented as a dependable solution on the evidence available. The official status applies to multiplayer and co-op generally; it is not limited to public matchmaking.
Do not confuse saved co-op content with a live service
The manual’s description of co-op challenges explains what the game was designed to offer. It does not mean that the challenges are playable offline, that an old server can be selected, or that a copied configuration will recreate the original network service. Treat the manual as historical documentation, not a current activation guide.

Unofficial workarounds: why the answer remains unresolved
Players have mentioned possible community methods for old online games, but a mention is not the same as a supported or repeatable fix. No authoritative project documentation, maintenance record, or repeatable test has been established for restoring this game’s co-op in the current PC release.
That leaves several unknowns: whether a proposed method works with the edition sold today, whether both players need identical files, whether it survives launcher or operating-system updates, and whether it introduces account, malware, privacy, or save-data risks. Without answers to those questions, recommending a workaround would turn an unresolved possibility into a promise. If co-op is essential, make your buying decision as though no workaround exists.

Why it may still appeal
The unsupported-online notice does not remove the single-player campaign from the product description. A buyer interested in the stealth story, level design, or historical PC catalog may still find a reason to own it. The 2006 release date also sets expectations: this is legacy software, not a modern remaster with current online infrastructure.

What has not been proven
No current benchmark, compatibility-rate survey, player-count statistic, or sales figure is established for this buying decision. You therefore cannot infer that the game will run at a particular frame rate, resolution, or controller configuration on your computer. Those outcomes can vary with Windows version, drivers, display hardware, input devices, and launcher behavior.
A sensible solo-player test
- Install the required launcher and sign in to the account that owns the PC license.
- Start the game with network expectations set aside; the purchase should already make sense as a single-player title.
- Test a complete launch, a new campaign, saving, loading, audio, video output, and your preferred input method during the seller’s stated return period.
- If the game fails to launch or behaves incorrectly, record the exact error and system configuration before changing files or applying community patches.
- Use the seller’s support and refund process rather than assuming an unofficial network fix will solve a single-player installation problem.
Common buyer mistakes
- Relying on an old review. A review written when the game launched can accurately describe the original feature set while being obsolete about online availability.
- Reading “co-op included” as “co-op works now.” The manual documents the former; the current publisher and store notices address the latter.
- Ignoring the launcher requirement. The PC listing requires a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect. Account and launcher friction remains relevant even when you only want the campaign.
- Assuming Windows support equals guaranteed compatibility. Windows 10 and Windows 11 are named on the listing, but no universal performance or compatibility guarantee is supplied.
- Paying a premium for a co-op promise. The original feature is not a reason to pay more today when the supported service is nonfunctional.
- Counting on a community fix without evidence. Until a method has current documentation and repeatable results for the exact PC edition, it is an experiment, not a purchasing feature.
A decision checklist
Answer these questions before clicking Buy:
- Would I still want the game if it were permanently single-player?
- Am I comfortable using a Ubisoft account and Ubisoft Connect?
- Does my Windows 10 or Windows 11 setup meet the seller’s listed requirements?
- Have I checked the live price, regional availability, and refund terms myself?
- Can I test launch, saves, sound, graphics, and controls during the return period?
- Am I treating unofficial co-op restoration as unverified rather than guaranteed?
If you answer “no” to the first question, stop there: the current online status removes the feature you wanted. If you answer “yes,” the purchase becomes a solo legacy-game decision, and you should evaluate it on price, platform friction, and your own hardware rather than on the historical co-op mode.
Verdict
Splinter Cell: Double Agent is not worth buying on PC for co-op. The PC release originally described co-op challenges, but Ubisoft and Steam now state that online features are unsupported and multiplayer and co-op modes are nonfunctional. Buy it only if the single-player campaign or the historical release has value to you independently. Check the live listing, account requirements, operating-system support, price, and your seller’s refund policy before committing, and do not treat an unverified community workaround as part of the product.
