Solar can reduce how much electricity you buy from your utility, but it will not automatically eliminate your bill. Whether it saves your household money depends on three things: how much your roof can produce, how your use and utility’s billing rules affect the value of that electricity, and whether the system’s full cost and contract terms work over the time you expect to own the home.
There is no single national savings figure that can predict your result. Start with your last 12 months of bills and get a written, site-specific production estimate and quote. This guidance is U.S.-focused; utility rules, incentives, installation costs, and contractor licensing vary by location.

1. Can your property produce enough solar electricity?
A solar estimate is only useful if it reflects your roof and location. Roof orientation matters, but it is not the only factor: slope, shade, local sunlight, roof condition, and system design all affect production. The U.S. Department of Energy says panels typically perform best on south-facing roofs, including southeast- through southwest-facing roofs, with slopes of 15 to 40 degrees. Other roof directions and slopes may still be suitable; ask for an estimate based on your actual site rather than ruling a roof in or out by direction alone. DOE’s Homeowner’s Guide to Solar explains these considerations.

Check roof condition and shading
If the roof needs replacement soon, factor that work into the project decision. Shade from trees or nearby structures can reduce output, and a production estimate should account for the site rather than assume ideal, unobstructed exposure. Ask the installer to state the estimated annual production and the assumptions behind it.

Use production, not panel count, as the comparison
When comparing proposals, look at estimated electricity production in kilowatt-hours (kWh), system size, and the assumptions used to calculate them. Two proposals with similar equipment capacity can produce different estimates because of roof layout, shade, and design. A site-specific estimate is a forecast, not a guarantee of the electricity your system will generate.
2. How much of that electricity will reduce your actual bill?
Solar savings depend on how much electricity the system supplies when your household needs it and how your utility treats electricity sent back to the grid. The Federal Trade Commission notes: “Depending on how much power your system produces and how much power you use, you’ll probably still be buying some power from the local utility.” In addition to electricity bought at other times, many grid-connected households continue to owe fixed utility charges. The FTC’s consumer guide recommends starting with a year of utility bills.

Build a baseline from 12 months of bills
- Total your use: Add the metered kWh shown on your utility bills for the last 12 months. This captures seasonal changes better than using one month.
- Separate fixed charges: Identify delivery, customer, administrative, or other charges that do not fall simply because you buy fewer kWh. Do not count these as solar savings unless the utility’s tariff says they can be avoided.
- Compare variable charges: Identify the charges tied to electricity consumption, then compare the rate and billing periods with the solar estimate’s assumed usage and production.
- Ask how exports are credited: Confirm the utility’s current rules for excess electricity sent to the grid, including the credit rate, eligibility, system-size limits, and how credits appear on the bill.
Match generation to when you use power
A system can generate electricity while the household is using little and export the excess, then the household may draw from the grid later. The financial value of exported electricity depends on local utility rules; it may not equal the retail price you pay to buy power. Time-of-use rates can also change the value of using or exporting power at different hours. Ask the utility for its current tariff and have the installer show how the proposal models your usage, imports, exports, and bill credits.

3. Do the full costs and contract terms make sense?
Compare the expected bill reduction with the total cost you would actually bear, not just a headline monthly payment or a simple payback estimate. Include the cash price or full financed, lease, or power-purchase-agreement (PPA) costs; fees and any escalators; maintenance responsibilities; insurance effects; and what happens if you sell the home. DOE’s solar savings guidance describes a simple payback calculation, but payback is a screening tool—not a guaranteed result or a complete investment comparison.
A simple screening calculation
One basic method is to subtract upfront incentives that genuinely apply from the system cost, then divide that net cost by estimated annual financial benefit: electricity-bill savings plus any recurring incentives. The result is an estimated payback period. It is sensitive to the production and savings assumptions and leaves out factors unless you add them, including financing costs, utility fixed charges, maintenance, insurance effects, future electricity rates, and uncertain output. DOE’s illustrative investment comparisons assume 2.5% annual inflation and no maintenance cost, insurance effect, or increase in resale value; those examples are assumptions, not forecasts for your household.

Check incentives using the purchase date
Do not assume a new 2026 residential solar purchase qualifies for the federal residential clean energy credit. The IRS says the credit “will not be allowed for any expenditures made after December 31, 2025.” Its 2025 Form 5695 instructions describe a 30% credit for qualified costs during the eligible period, but that rate should not be applied to expenditures made after the cutoff. If you had eligible expenditures in 2025 or have a carryforward, check the IRS Residential Clean Energy Credit guidance and the applicable instructions for your tax situation. State, local, or utility incentives may differ; verify their current eligibility and terms before including them in your calculation.

Compare ownership and contract obligations
For a cash purchase, compare the installed price and included work. For financing, review the total payments, fees, and any conditions tied to incentives or payment schedules. For a lease or PPA, establish who owns the equipment, who handles maintenance, whether payments rise over time, and what happens to the agreement if you sell. A lower initial payment does not by itself establish a lower total cost.

What should you ask before signing?
- Ask the utility how its export-credit rules work, whether you qualify, any system-size limits, and how credits are calculated and applied.
- Ask each installer for a written production estimate and the assumptions behind its savings estimate, including utility rates, household use, and exported electricity.
- Compare proposals for similar system sizes and scope, including equipment, installation, permitting, and any roof work.
- Check the contractor’s history with state or local consumer protection offices and licensing boards.
- For a lease or PPA, get the ownership, escalator, maintenance, sale, and transfer terms in writing; find out whether a homebuyer must assume the contract.
- Do not let pressure to sign immediately or demands for cash rush your decision. The FTC’s solar guide warns consumers about high-pressure sales tactics.
Would a battery or community solar change the decision?
Battery storage
A battery can store solar electricity for later use, such as at night, and may provide power during an outage. Those are distinct benefits: backup power is not the same as bill savings. A battery adds upfront cost, so its financial value depends on your utility’s time-of-use rates and export compensation, when your household uses electricity, and how much you value backup. DOE describes these uses but does not establish that batteries always pay for themselves. Ask for a separate calculation for the battery rather than assuming it improves the solar system’s payback.
Community solar
If you rent or your roof is too shaded or otherwise unsuitable, community solar may be an option where available. In DOE’s description, customers subscribe to a share of a solar project and receive a utility-bill credit for their share of generation, without owning rooftop equipment or paying for a rooftop installation. Availability, subscription terms, provider details, and the way credits are calculated vary; confirm all of them locally. See DOE’s community solar overview.
