Is Skateboarding Safer on the Street or at a Skate Park? Risks and Rules

Neither setting is proven safer overall by the available evidence. Streets expose skateboarders to vehicles, pedestrians and unpredictable pavement; skate parks remove ordinary road traffic but still carry risks from falls, collisions, difficult features and unsafe surfaces. The safer choice depends on conditions, skill, protective gear and the rules that apply where you ride.

How the risks differ

Factor Streets and public spaces Skate parks
Traffic and other people Moving vehicles and pedestrians can create hazards. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) specifically advises skateboarders to stay clear of moving vehicles. A purpose-built park separates riders from ordinary road traffic, but riders still need to watch for other users and avoid collisions.
Surface Pavement may have holes, bumps, rocks, debris or uneven features. Check the route before riding. Ramps and other features are designed for skating, but a park can still be unsafe when its surface is wet, icy, snowy or obstructed.
Skill and speed Obstacles and nearby road users demand control, awareness and a speed that allows you to react. Features vary in difficulty. Seattle Parks advises riders to stay within their abilities and progress carefully.
Visibility and access CPSC recommends riding during daylight and avoiding low-light conditions. Local rules may govern where skating is allowed. Hours, lighting, equipment requirements and conduct rules vary by facility. Check the park’s current posted rules.

This is a practical comparison, not a validated risk score. The available figures do not provide comparable injury rates for street skating and skatepark skating, so they cannot establish that one setting is safer overall.

What the injury figures can—and cannot—tell you

A 2006 CPSC release reported estimated U.S. emergency-room treatment for 18,743 skateboard-related head injuries in 2004, including 764 hospitalized head injuries. The figures were drawn from the agency’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System and cover skateboard activity generally, not a street-versus-park breakdown. CPSC’s 2006 release.

A 2003 AAP Grand Rounds summary of a single skatepark study reported 106 injuries among 100 enrolled subjects and a rate of 1.11 injuries per 1,000 skatepark users during the study period (95% confidence interval 0.91–1.35). That single-site finding is not a rate for all parks and cannot be directly compared with the national CPSC head-injury estimate. AAP Grand Rounds summary.

Reduce risk in either setting

Wear a properly fitted helmet and protective gear

CPSC recommends a helmet, wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads. Fit matters: CDC guidance says a helmet can help protect a child or teen from serious brain or head injury, but no helmet is concussion-proof. Choose a helmet appropriate for the rider and activity, follow applicable certification guidance, and wear it correctly and consistently. CDC HEADS UP helmet guidance, updated July 28, 2025.

Check the board and the riding surface

Before setting off, look for loose or broken board parts and check the terrain for holes, rocks, debris and other hazards. CPSC recommends inspecting both the board and riding terrain; repair serious defects before riding. At a park, skip the session if the surface is wet, icy, snowy or obstructed. Seattle Parks gives this advice for its facilities, which it describes as unsupervised; it is local guidance, not a nationwide rule. CPSC, Skateboarding Safety (Publication 93, 2012); Seattle Parks rules and regulations, accessed October 4, 2026.

Match speed and difficulty to your ability

Do not go faster than you can handle. At a park, begin with features you can control and move up gradually. On streets or in public spaces, account for pedestrians, traffic and obstacles before attempting a maneuver. Ride in daylight and maintain enough visibility to see hazards; CPSC also recommends riding with friends.

Rules depend on where you ride

There is no single street-versus-park rule set established by these examples. State and local law may cover helmets or where skating is permitted, while a particular park may impose additional conditions on access and conduct.
