Its defining advantage is a 20mm wide end with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 there; its compromise is that the zoom stops at 60mm. It makes the most sense for photographers who value wide framing, portability and close focusing more than portrait or telephoto reach.
What the Sigma 20-60mm offers
This is a variable-aperture standard zoom, not a constant f/2.8 lens. Sigma specifies a 20-60mm focal range, with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 at 20mm that narrows to f/4 at 60mm. The company lists it in Sony E and L mounts. Its angle of view runs from 94.5° to 39.6%. Sigma’s specifications give the official range and mount details.

The extra width compared with a zoom that starts at 24mm can help in interiors, landscapes and travel scenes where stepping back is impossible. At the other end, 60mm works for everyday details and some portraits, but gives less framing flexibility than a longer standard zoom. If you routinely want to isolate distant subjects or make tighter portraits without changing lenses, that limit matters more than the wide-end advantage.
Size, handling and close focus
Sigma lists the Sony E version at 375g and 88mm long, and the L-mount version at 385g and 86mm long. Both are 72.2mm in diameter and take 67mm filters. The small weight and length make the lens appealing for a travel kit, though the two mount versions differ slightly and should not be treated as identical in size or weight. The package includes a hood, pouch, front cap and rear cap, according to Sigma’s product specifications.
#1 Best Overall
- Maximum aperture of F2.8 at 20mm
- An expansive ultra wide zoom to natural perspective
- Minimum focus distance of 15.8cm at 28mm allow for half-macro performance
- Filter size: 67mm
Close focusing adds genuine flexibility beyond the focal range. Sigma specifies a minimum focusing distance of 15.8cm at 28mm, with 20cm at the wide end and 25cm at the tele end. Maximum magnification is 1:2.3 at 35mm, useful for close-up details, though it is not a substitute for a dedicated macro lens.
The optical construction is 15 elements in 13 groups, including three SLD and three aspherical elements. Sigma specifies nine rounded diaphragm blades and a minimum aperture range of f/22-32. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of a particular rendering in every scene.

What reviewers found in image quality and operation
In his September 12, 2026 review, Chris Niccolls of PetaPixel reported good detail and flare resistance with only minor ghosting. He found the 60mm detail more consistent, while corners were softer at 20mm wide open. He also noted minor longitudinal chromatic aberration at 20mm f/2.8, somewhat harsh bokeh and average sunstars. These are the reviewer’s observations, not results from our own testing. Read the PetaPixel review.
Matthew Richards’s September 8, 2026 Digital Camera World review reported strong central and intermediate sharpness across the zoom range, with more variable corners at mid-to-long focal lengths when shooting wide open. That review also flags heavy distortion before correction and an inner barrel that extends as the lens zooms. Read the Digital Camera World review.

- From an expansive 20mm ultra-wide to a natural 60mm perspective, this lens delivers a wide range of expression in a versatile zoom. Capture everything from sweeping landscapes to everyday snapshots and portraits—without changing lenses.
- Weighing just 385g*, this 3x zoom achieves an incredibly compact design—remarkable for an ultra-wide lens starting at F2.8. Its slim form fits easily into any bag, making it ideal for everything from daily snapshots and travel to hiking and video creation.
- With a minimum focusing distance of 15.8 cm at 28mm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.3 at 35mm, this lens delivers richly detailed close-up images approaching half-macro performance.
- Flare and ghosting, which reduce image quality, are addressed under all conditions of incident light, based on the most advanced simulation technology. High backlight resistance enables clear and sharp images under any lighting conditions.
- The lens is designed to minimize changes in the angle of view caused by focusing, enabling smooth, natural-looking focus pulls when recording video.
For practical handling, PetaPixel reports quick focusing, dust resistance and weather sealing, but also notes that the lens has no AF/MF switches and no optical stabilization. The lack of stabilization is particularly relevant for handheld video or stills in low light: check what stabilization your camera body provides and whether that is sufficient for your use.

Who should buy it?
It suits you if
- You often wish a standard zoom started at 20mm rather than 24mm, especially for interiors, travel or wide video framing.
- You want a compact full-frame zoom and value the f/2.8 maximum aperture at the wide end.
- You will use close focusing for food, objects or environmental details.
- Your camera body’s stabilization and correction workflow meet your needs.
Look elsewhere if
- You regularly need more than 60mm and prefer not to change lenses.
- Smoother background blur, physical AF/MF controls or optical stabilization are essential to your workflow.
- You need consistently crisp corners at wide apertures across the zoom range; reviewer findings vary by focal length and aperture.
- You are comparing it with another system’s lens: mount compatibility is decisive, and the Sigma is offered only in Sony E and L mounts.
Verdict
The Sigma’s appeal is unusually clear: 20mm coverage, a relatively bright f/2.8 maximum aperture at that wide end, close-focus capability and a compact body. Its 60mm ceiling is the price of that particular balance. Choose it when your standard zoom needs to go wider and you can live with limited telephoto reach; choose a longer-range option if avoiding lens changes matters more. Before purchase, confirm the mount, current local price, body stabilization and your tolerance for distortion correction and wide-open corner softness.
