Is Sherwin-Williams Stock a Good Long-Term Investment? Key Risks and Metrics

Sherwin-Williams has a long record of cash generation, dividend increases and positive earnings growth, and its second-quarter 2026 results and outlook improved. But the long-term case is conditional: management still sees soft demand, while inflation and higher financing costs could pressure results. The available company disclosures do not establish whether the shares are attractively valued at October 7, 2026, so they do not support an unconditional buy verdict.

What Sherwin-Williams does—and why that matters to investors

The Sherwin-Williams Company develops, manufactures, distributes and sells paints, coatings and related products to professional, industrial, commercial and retail customers. Its three reporting groups are Paint Stores, Consumer Brands and Performance Coatings. The business operates primarily in North and South America, with additional activity in the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Australia. Sherwin-Williams-branded products are sold through company-operated stores and facilities; other brands reach customers through retailers, independent dealers and distributors. The company says its Performance Coatings business serves construction, industrial, packaging and transportation markets in more than 120 countries. See the 2025 Form 10-K for its business description and fuller disclosures.

This mix can give the company exposure to different customers and end markets, but it also means results need to be assessed by segment. A strong paint-store quarter does not by itself establish that industrial, consumer-brand and international demand are equally strong.

What the recent results say

The latest reported quarter available on October 7, 2026, was the quarter ended June 30. The following periods are not directly interchangeable: fiscal-year results show a full year, while Q2 is a single quarter. GAAP diluted EPS is shown separately from adjusted diluted EPS because adjusted results exclude specified items.

Period and measure Reported result How to read it
Fiscal 2025 net sales $23.57 billion, up 2.1% Annual consolidated sales growth.
Fiscal 2025 diluted EPS $10.26, down 2.7% GAAP earnings per diluted share.
Fiscal 2025 adjusted diluted EPS $11.43, up 0.9% Adjusted measure; do not treat it as a replacement for GAAP EPS.
Fiscal 2025 net operating cash $3.45 billion, or 14.6% of net sales Cash generated from operations during the year.
Fiscal 2025 Paint Stores same-store sales Up 1.7% Company-reported result for stores open more than twelve months.
Q2 2026 net sales $6.79 billion, up 7.5% Consolidated quarter-over-quarter-year comparison; growth includes Suvinil, acquired in October 2025, in the comparison.
Q2 2026 diluted EPS $3.43, up 14.3% GAAP earnings per diluted share.
Q2 2026 adjusted diluted EPS $3.70, up 9.5% Adjusted measure, reported separately from GAAP EPS.
Q2 2026 net income and EBITDA $843.6 million net income; EBITDA of $1.43 billion, up 13.8% Company-reported quarterly figures.
Q2 2026 Paint Stores same-store sales Up 4.2% A useful demand indicator, but one quarter is not a long-term trend.

Fiscal 2025 figures come from the company’s 2025 year-end and fourth-quarter results; Q2 figures come from its July 28, 2026 second-quarter release.

The pattern is mixed rather than uniformly strong: annual sales and operating cash rose, but reported diluted EPS declined while adjusted EPS grew modestly. Q2 improved across sales, EPS and same-store sales, but consolidated growth should not be read as wholly organic because the Suvinil acquisition affects the comparison.

What is the long-term record—and what it can’t prove

Sherwin-Williams’ investor overview reports the following selected historical measures through December 31, 2025. They describe past performance, are company-selected metrics, and are not independent forecasts of future returns.

Company-reported measure Value and period
Adjusted EPS growth 5-year CAGR of 6.9%, as of December 31, 2025
Same-store sales growth 5-year average of 5.6%, as of December 31, 2025
Net operating cash $14.3 billion over five years, as of December 31, 2025
Dividend increases 47 consecutive years through December 31, 2025
Shareholder return 10-year average annual return of 15.18%, as of December 31, 2025

The company also reported $2.4 billion returned through share repurchases and dividends during 2025, and $2.23 billion returned during the first six months of 2026 through June 30. Those are historical capital-return amounts, not a promise that future distributions or repurchases will continue at the same level. Historical figures and company overview metrics are available through the Sherwin-Williams investor overview.

What management expects—and what remains uncertain

In its July 28, 2026 release, Sherwin-Williams raised its full-year 2026 expectations to a mid-to-high-single-digit percentage increase in net sales and adjusted diluted EPS of $11.80–$12.20. Its contemporaneous GAAP diluted EPS guidance was $10.92–$11.32, including stated acquisition-related amortization and restructuring expenses. This update superseded the January 2026 outlook of $11.50–$11.90 in adjusted diluted EPS and low-to-mid-single-digit sales growth. These are management forecasts, not realized results, and can change.

Management’s confidence in the quarter did not amount to a claim that demand had recovered. In the same Q2 release, Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer Heidi G. Petz said, “Sherwin-Williams delivered strong second quarter results and continued to outperform the market despite ongoing global uncertainty and no meaningful improvement in demand.” The company said customer sentiment and leading indicators pointed to continued demand softness in the second half of 2026.

The company cited broad-based cost inflation in raw materials, energy, logistics and packaging, and said raw-material inflation pressured Q2 gross margin. It announced an 8% Paint Stores Group price increase effective September 1, 2026. Pricing actions may help offset costs, but the announcement alone does not establish how customers will respond or whether margins will recover. Q2 restructuring actions were expected by management to generate approximately $17 million in annual savings; that is an expectation, not a reported realized saving.

As of October 7, 2026, Q3 2026 results were not yet available: the company had announced it would report them on October 27. Do not treat later-quarter performance as known when assessing this outlook.

Key risks to the long-term investment case

Soft underlying demand

Management’s second-half demand outlook was soft even as Q2 same-store sales increased. Investors should check whether growth persists across several quarters and distinguish volume from price and mix, rather than assuming that a price increase signals stronger customer demand.

Input costs and pricing power

Raw-material, energy, logistics and packaging inflation can weigh on gross margin. The investment question is whether the company can pass through those costs without hurting volumes or losing business. Q2’s reported margin pressure makes this an operating issue to monitor, not a settled outcome.

Debt, interest expense and capital demands

The 2025 annual report forecast that 2026 interest expense would increase by approximately $85 million, citing refinanced maturities, borrowing associated with Suvinil, new headquarters and research facilities, and higher refinancing rates. That was the annual report’s forecast, not a confirmed current estimate. The later Q2 release also noted additional interest expense attributable to increased short-term borrowings and long-term debt. Track later disclosures for updated costs and debt changes rather than assuming the earlier estimate remains exact.

Acquisition integration and growth quality

Suvinil’s inclusion affects year-over-year consolidated sales comparisons. For a long-term thesis, assess whether the acquisition contributes sustainable, profitable growth, while keeping organic demand separate from acquisition effects and currency changes.

Broader business and market risks

The 2025 Form 10-K discusses macroeconomic conditions, inflation and interest rates, tariffs, supply-chain disruptions, raw-material availability and foreign-currency fluctuations. Sherwin-Williams’ exposure to multiple segments and geographies means conditions can differ across its businesses. These are examples, not an exhaustive risk list; consult the filing’s full risk factors.

Metrics to follow before deciding whether to invest

A durable thesis needs more than a headline EPS number. Review these measures together in company filings and earnings releases:

  • Organic demand: Paint Stores same-store sales, sales volume, and price/mix; separate acquired growth and currency effects where disclosed.
  • Segment performance: Sales, profit and margins for Paint Stores, Consumer Brands and Performance Coatings, alongside the end markets each serves.
  • Earnings quality: GAAP diluted EPS beside adjusted EPS, with acquisition amortization and restructuring costs visible.
  • Cash and capital needs: Operating cash flow and capital expenditures alongside dividends, repurchases, and changes in debt or borrowings.
  • Capital allocation and integration: Whether cash generation supports distributions and acquisitions, and whether Suvinil adds profitable, repeatable growth.
  • Valuation: A dated share price and clearly defined valuation measures, such as price-to-earnings based on consistently defined trailing or forward earnings.

The figures and disclosures cited here do not include a contemporaneous share price or comparable valuation benchmark. That missing step matters: even a resilient business can be a poor investment if the price already assumes more growth or profitability than the company can deliver. To make a valuation judgment, use a dated market price, consistent earnings definitions and relevant peer comparisons, then weigh the implied expectations against demand, margins, cash generation and financing costs.

So, is Sherwin-Williams stock a good long-term investment?

It may suit an investor who believes Sherwin-Williams can sustain its competitive position, turn pricing and acquisitions into profitable growth, and keep generating cash through softer demand. The long operating record and recent Q2 improvement support further consideration; the soft-demand outlook, cost inflation and higher financing costs argue for watching execution rather than extrapolating one strong quarter. Whether the shares are a good investment at a particular date cannot be answered from operating results alone: it depends on the price paid and the growth already reflected in that price.

This is a company-level framework, not individualized investment advice. Sherwin-Williams’ results and forecasts can change, and an investor’s time horizon, risk tolerance and portfolio needs also matter.
