Yes, if you want Talion’s story in its intended order; no, it is not essential if you mainly want to play Shadow of War. Warner Bros. presents Shadow of War as the sequel to Shadow of Mordor, so starting with the earlier game gives you the natural story sequence and lets you experience its version of the Nemesis System. But the old Nemesis Forge feature that once carried a player’s enemy into the sequel is no longer available. Play the first game for its story and its own experience—not to unlock a personal enemy transfer.
Choose based on what you want from the series
The decision is less about whether you are allowed to skip a game and more about what you want from the two-game sequence. If continuity matters to you, play Shadow of Mordor first. If you are chiefly interested in reaching Shadow of War, starting with the sequel is a reasonable choice.

| Your priority | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Following Talion’s story in order | Shadow of Mordor | Warner Bros. identifies Shadow of War as the sequel to Shadow of Mordor. |
| Playing the later game without committing to both | Shadow of War | You can choose the sequel if the first game’s story is not a priority. This is a practical recommendation, not a promise that the sequel contains no references or assumes no prior context. |
| Experiencing the first game’s take on the Nemesis System | Shadow of Mordor | Both official game descriptions foreground the Nemesis System; each game is a chance to experience it in that game. |
| Importing a personal Nemesis from the first game | Neither choice achieves this now | Nemesis Forge is unavailable, according to WB Games Support and PlayStation. |
In short: the first game is worthwhile as the beginning of the story and as its own game, but it is not a required setup step for everyone.

The story in its intended sequence
Warner Bros.’ official Shadow of War description calls it the “epic sequel” to Shadow of Mordor. That is the clearest reason to play the earlier title first: you encounter the series in release and story order rather than beginning with the follow-up. If you prefer to understand a continuing story from its starting point, the order is straightforward—Shadow of Mordor, then Shadow of War.

The available official descriptions establish the sequel relationship, but they do not spell out how much prior knowledge a new player needs to follow Shadow of War. So it would be too strong to claim either that the sequel is completely self-explanatory or that the first game is mandatory. Use your own tolerance for entering a continuing story partway through: players who dislike missing setup should start at the beginning; players who are comfortable doing so can go straight to the sequel.
A first experience of the Nemesis System
The Nemesis System is a central part of how both official game descriptions present the games. Warner Bros. describes Shadow of Mordor around forging a Nemesis and discovering an ally, while its Shadow of War description emphasizes forging an army and conquering fortresses. Playing the first title therefore lets you experience its version of the system before moving on, rather than treating it only as background for the sequel.

That appeal is not a guarantee that the first game will suit every player. GameSpot’s contemporary review described the Nemesis System as “remarkably absorbing,” while also noting frustrations with movement, the camera, and animation. Those are reviewer judgments, not universal outcomes. If the system sounds compelling to you, the first game has a clear reason to stand on its own; if its broader action and presentation are not appealing, the sequel’s existence alone is not a reason you must play it.
What playing Mordor first no longer does
Do not choose Shadow of Mordor because you expect it to send one of your personal Nemeses into Shadow of War. Nemesis Forge, the feature associated with transferring a player’s Nemesis, is no longer available. Both WB Games Support and the PlayStation product listing report that the feature is unavailable.

This changes the practical case for playing in order. The first game can introduce you to the series’ setting and its Nemesis System, and it gives you the story’s starting point. It does not currently offer the former personal enemy carryover into the sequel. In other words, playing both in sequence still has a story and gameplay rationale, but not that particular cross-game reward.
If you decide to play both, use this order
- Start with Shadow of Mordor. This is the first game in the story sequence and the entry point if you want Talion’s narrative in order.
- Move to Shadow of War. It is officially presented as the sequel. Approach it as the next game in the series, not as a destination that requires a Nemesis transfer from the first title.
You do not need to make the order decision based on a transfer setting or on a promise that the first game unlocks a special version of the sequel. The reason to play in order is the experience of the first game itself and the continuity of the series.

Which Shadow of Mordor edition should you consider?
If you have decided to play the first game, the relevant edition named in the available official material is Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor – Game of the Year Edition. Warner Bros. describes its definitive version as including The Lord of the Hunt and The Bright Lord story missions, the Trials of War challenge series, and additional Warband Missions, Runes, and Skins. PlayStation also lists a Game of the Year Edition.

A practical decision in three questions
- Do you want the story from its beginning? Play Shadow of Mordor first. The sequel relationship makes that the natural order.
- Are you interested in the first game’s own Nemesis System experience? That is another reason to start there; GameSpot’s review praised the system while also pointing out presentation and control frustrations.
- Are you mainly eager to play Shadow of War? Go directly to it if you prefer. Just do not expect Nemesis Forge to transfer your enemy from the earlier game.
A player asking whether the series is worth getting into and whether the first game is necessary can treat those as separate questions. The series may interest you because of the Nemesis System, while the decision to play both depends on whether you want the earlier story and experience. You can value the sequel without treating the first game as a compulsory prerequisite.
