It folds into a compact form for a pocket or bag, then opens into a touchscreen smartphone with a large main display. The current generation documented here, the Galaxy Z Flip7, pairs a 6.9-inch main display with a 4.1-inch cover display.
What Samsung means by a modern flip phone
The Galaxy Z Flip is a foldable smartphone built around a familiar idea: close the two halves together to make the device smaller, then open it for full-screen use. Samsung’s descriptions of the design emphasize its compact folded shape, but the resemblance to an older flip phone is mainly physical. The Z Flip is not a return to a feature phone with a physical keypad and a small, basic screen; it is a contemporary touchscreen phone whose display folds.

Samsung’s design-history material and its account of the Galaxy Z series present the Z Flip as a modern interpretation of the clamshell form. That makes “Samsung flip phone” a useful shorthand for the Galaxy Z Flip, provided it is understood as a foldable smartphone rather than an old-style handset. Samsung Newsroom Singapore’s Galaxy Z series history and Samsung Design’s history of Samsung design provide the company’s design context.

| Specification | Galaxy Z Flip7 |
|---|---|
| Main display | 6.9 inches |
| Cover display | 4.1 inches |
| Weight | 188 g |
| Rear cameras | 50 MP wide and 12 MP ultra-wide |
| Typical battery capacity | 4,300 mAh |
These are manufacturer-reported specifications in Samsung’s July 2025 announcement, not independent test results. The two screen sizes describe the practical difference between folded and unfolded use: the cover display is for interacting with the phone while it is shut, while opening it exposes the larger screen. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip7 announcement and specification information lists these figures.
How it compares with the old flip-phone idea
The most useful comparison is not a feature-by-feature match with a particular vintage handset. It is the change in what the clamshell shape does:
- Closed: The device becomes more compact than an open smartphone, and its cover display allows some use without opening it.
- Open: It becomes a touchscreen smartphone with a large main display, rather than relying on the small screen and keypad associated with classic feature phones.
- Ownership: The folding design is part of a premium smartphone product. Its appeal should be weighed against its price and the practical requirements of owning a foldable; Samsung’s launch material alone does not establish that it is more durable or suitable for every user.
Samsung executive TM Roh described the Flip7 as proof that “big intelligence can come in a small, pocket-sized form factor.” That is Samsung’s own framing of the product, not an independent assessment of its size or capabilities.
Galaxy Z Flip7 and Flip7 FE: dated U.S. launch prices
Samsung announced U.S. starting launch prices of $1,099.99 for the Galaxy Z Flip7 and $899.99 for the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE in 2025. Those figures describe launch pricing, not current offers. Prices and stock can change, and a U.S. launch price does not establish what a phone costs or whether it is available in another country. See Samsung Newsroom U.S.’s July 9, 2025 launch announcement for the original prices.
Which model is current, and where is it available?
Samsung announced the Z Flip7 on July 9, 2025, and U.S. general availability began July 25, 2025. Samsung said rollout began across 49 markets on July 25, with expansion to more than 110 markets planned. Those dates and market counts describe the 2025 rollout; they do not confirm present-day inventory or availability in any particular country.
Samsung’s U.S. retail results observed on October 7, 2026 surfaced Galaxy Flip8 alongside Flip7. Because Samsung’s retail listing may change and it does not establish a full global release picture, check Samsung’s local store for the newest model and current price before buying. The 2025 launch announcement and rollout details are in Samsung Global Newsroom’s July 25, 2025 announcement.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether this form factor suits you
- Choose a Z Flip if folding the phone smaller when it is not in your hand is a meaningful convenience, and you are comfortable using the cover display for quick interactions.
- Consider a conventional smartphone if you prefer an uninterrupted large screen without opening the device, or if pocketability is not a priority.
- Before choosing a specific Z Flip generation, check its local availability, current price, dimensions and specifications. Do not assume every generation has the Flip7’s display sizes, cameras, battery or weight.
- If buying a case, verify the exact Z Flip generation and that the case is designed for that model and its hinge; compatibility should not be inferred from the family name alone.
