No. RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a paid standalone survival game, not a free-to-play title. Jagex uses a one-off purchase model for the base game. The publisher announced that its 1.0 price would remain £24.99 in the UK or US$29.99 in the United States, rather than increase at launch. Players can also access the game through eligible Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium subscriptions on supported consoles, but subscription access is not the same as a universally free game.
The practical choice is between buying an edition for your platform and using a qualifying subscription while Dragonwilds is included in that service’s catalog. Regional prices, catalog availability and physical stock can change, so check the store or subscription catalog you intend to use.

What “free to play” means for Dragonwilds
A free-to-play game lets anyone download the base experience without paying for a license, usually funding ongoing development through optional purchases. Dragonwilds does not use that model. Jagex’s legal terms describe a one-off payment for access to the base game, and the Steam listing offers paid Standard and Deluxe editions.

You do not need a recurring RuneScape membership to play. The Dragonwilds terms also say that no subscription or regular in-game transaction is required to access its content. Separate premium features or downloadable content could require additional one-off payments, but those possibilities do not change the base game’s paid status.

How much does RuneScape: Dragonwilds cost?
Jagex announced that the price after the 1.0 release would stay at £24.99 or US$29.99. Those are the publisher’s stated UK and US prices, not a guarantee of the amount shown in every country. Steam and console stores convert or localize prices, and taxes, regional pricing policies and currency changes can affect the final checkout total.

Jagex’s price statement was specifically about the 1.0 transition: “We’ve decided not to raise the price of RuneScape: Dragonwilds following our 1.0 release – it will stay at £24.99 or $29.99.” A sale, bundle or regional promotion can still temporarily change what you see in a store.
Can you play Dragonwilds with Game Pass or PlayStation Plus?
Xbox Game Pass
Jagex announced day-one Xbox Game Pass access for Xbox Series X|S when the game reached 1.0 on 15 September 2026. You need a subscription tier that is eligible under the current Xbox terms and an account on the supported console. If the game leaves the catalog, or if your tier does not include it, you would need to buy the game separately to continue through that route.

PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium
The same launch announcement said Dragonwilds would be available through PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium on PS5 from 15 September 2026. Access depends on maintaining an eligible subscription and on the title remaining in the catalog. Essential-tier membership alone is not identified as a qualifying route in that announcement.

Why subscription access is different from free-to-play
A subscription provides a license while your membership and the catalog inclusion remain active. It does not remove the game’s standalone price, create a free PC copy, or guarantee permanent access after cancellation. Treat Game Pass and PlayStation Plus as alternative access routes, not proof that Dragonwilds has become free to play.
Do you need RuneScape membership?
No. Dragonwilds is governed by its own purchase and access terms. Jagex’s EULA says that a one-off payment is required for the base game and that no RuneScape subscription or recurring in-game transaction is needed to access its content. An existing RuneScape membership should therefore not be treated as a Dragonwilds license.
The terms allow separate one-off charges for premium features or downloadable content. If Jagex adds such content, the base-game purchase and any optional additions would be separate decisions; the EULA does not promise that every future feature will be included automatically.

PC players have two official installation routes described by Jagex Support: Steam and the Jagex Launcher. They are separate installs. Buying the Steam version does not grant access to the Jagex Launcher version, and buying through the Jagex Launcher does not unlock the Steam installation. Choose the storefront you intend to use before purchasing, especially if you want your library, updates and launch process tied to a particular platform.

Accounts needed for online play
The Steam listing identifies Epic Online Services as a third-party account requirement. Jagex’s EULA clarifies the practical boundary: an Epic Games account is required for online play, but not for offline play. Other platform sign-ins, such as your Steam, Xbox or PlayStation account, still apply according to the device you use.
Basic PC setup checklist
- Choose Steam or the Jagex Launcher; do not assume a purchase transfers between them.
- Check that your Windows version, processor, memory, graphics card, DirectX installation and free storage meet the published requirements.
- Install the selected client and sign in to the account associated with that purchase.
- For online play, create or sign in to the required Epic Games account and allow the client to complete its first-run setup.
- Keep at least the stated storage free before installing; updates can require additional temporary space.

Jagex’s current support page lists the following requirements. Support documentation can be updated, so recheck it if your hardware is close to the minimum.

Meeting the minimum specification means the computer is within Jagex’s supported baseline; it does not promise a particular frame rate or graphics preset. If you plan to play online, a stable broadband connection and the required third-party account are separate practical requirements.
Release dates, editions and future updates
Steam lists 15 April 2025 as the Early Access start date. Jagex announced the full 1.0 release for 15 September 2026. The company also said it would continue monthly updates and that planned updates, including the named Luminance update, would be free. “Free updates” means those patches are included for owners; it does not mean the paid base game has changed to a free-to-play product.

Jagex reported more than one million Early Access sales in its June 2026 launch announcement. That sales figure describes purchases during Early Access, not a free claim or a measure of how many subscription users later accessed the game.
Which access route should you choose?
Buy the PC version if you want permanent ownership of that license
A direct purchase avoids dependence on a rotating console subscription catalog. Decide first whether Steam or the Jagex Launcher suits your library and friends list, then compare the live regional prices of the Standard and Deluxe editions. Remember that the two PC installs are not interchangeable.
Use a console subscription if you already maintain one
Game Pass on Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation Plus Extra/Premium on PS5 can be the lower immediate cost when Dragonwilds is included and you already pay for the qualifying tier. Confirm the current catalog entry and the terms for your country. If you cancel, downgrade or the game is removed, subscription-based access can end.
Choose a console purchase when you want access independent of the catalog
Buying the console edition removes the catalog dependency, but the current standalone price is market-specific. Open the Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo store for your region and verify the edition, currency, taxes and platform compatibility before checkout.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling it free-to-play because it is in a subscription catalog: subscription access is conditional and does not create a free universal license.
- Assuming RuneScape membership carries over: Dragonwilds uses its own one-off purchase terms.
- Buying the wrong PC version: Steam and Jagex Launcher purchases unlock separate installs.
- Assuming every console price is £24.99 or US$29.99: those figures are Jagex’s announced UK and US 1.0 prices; local stores may show different amounts.
- Treating the physical Q4 2026 announcement as confirmed stock: verify a current listing, retailer, region and delivery date.
- Expecting offline play to use every online service: the EULA says the Epic Games account is needed for online play, not offline play.
