RPCS3 is emulator software, but that alone does not determine whether a game copy, firmware file, download, or copying method is legal. Laws vary by country. RPCS3’s guide tells users to dump their own game data; it documents routes using either a PS3 console or a compatible Blu-ray drive. For emulator firmware, get the official update from PlayStation Support and install it through RPCS3’s firmware installer.
Is RPCS3 legal?
The emulator program and the copyrighted material used with it are separate issues. RPCS3 being software does not settle whether a particular game copy or firmware file was obtained lawfully, or whether a method used to copy or decrypt it is permitted where you live.

In the United States, the Copyright Office says section 1201 of the DMCA generally prohibits circumventing technological measures used to prevent unauthorized access to copyrighted works, including video games and software. The law also provides for limited, class-specific exemptions adopted through a rulemaking process; those exemptions are not a blanket permission for every personal copy or disc dump. Those sources describe U.S. law, not the rules in every country or the outcome of every individual situation. Owning a PS3 disc does not, by itself, establish that every copying or circumvention method is lawful. If the legal answer matters for your circumstances, check the law where you live or consult a qualified lawyer.

Use official firmware for RPCS3
For RPCS3, download the PS3 system software update from PlayStation Support, then use the emulator’s installer. Sony’s instructions for installing an update on a physical PS3 are a separate workflow from installing firmware in RPCS3.
- Download the official PS3 update file from PlayStation Support.
- Open RPCS3 and choose File > Install Firmware.
- Select the downloaded update file and follow the installer prompts.
If you are updating a physical PS3 instead, Sony’s instructions say to save the update file to a USB drive at PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP, then select Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media on the console. Sony warns against using update data from other sources or installation methods outside its instructions.

Dump a PS3 disc game
RPCS3’s Quickstart Guide says disc titles must be self-dumped and documents two routes. Use the method you can follow with hardware you have; the PC route depends on a Blu-ray drive that can read PS3-format discs.

The game folder described by RPCS3 typically contains PS3_GAME and PS3_DISC.SFB. The PS3_UPDATE directory is not required for that game folder. Use the Quickstart’s current instructions to complete the dump and prepare the files for RPCS3.

Copy a digital game from your PS3
For digital titles, RPCS3’s guide describes copying the game data from the console’s dev_hdd0/game/GameID location to the corresponding path in the RPCS3 folder. Follow the project guide’s current instructions for the specific title and its licensing files. A third-party game download is not a substitute for your own dump.
