Yes, if you enjoy replayable action roguelikes built around randomized runs, changing item combinations, and escalating difficulty. The base game is the sensible place to start: it contains the core experience and supports solo play and co-op. Treat expansions as optional additions, and choose them with their differing reception and your platform in mind. In particular, check the current console-support notice before buying for an older console or planning a cross-generation group.
What you get in the base game
Risk of Rain 2 is a third-person, run-based action game. Its official Steam listing describes more than a dozen handcrafted locales, randomized stages, enemies and items, survivor-specific combat, and a difficulty system that scales as a run continues. You can play solo or online with others. PlayStation’s listing describes co-op with up to three friends.

The appeal is adapting to the items and situations a run gives you, then learning how different survivors and combinations work. That makes the game a stronger fit for players who enjoy replaying and experimenting than for someone looking for a fixed, linear campaign. This is a judgment based on the game’s described structure, not a hands-on review.
Steam’s base-game listing showed 95% positive from 163,571 English-language user reviews in a 2026 search-result snapshot crawled about two weeks before October 11. That is a large, useful signal about Steam players’ reception, but it is not a critic score, a fixed rating, or evidence of performance on other platforms. See the Steam listing.

Which DLC is worth buying?
All four expansions below are optional additions to the base game. They add survivors and other content rather than replacing the core run-based experience. If you are new, start with the base game and decide whether you want more after you know you enjoy its loop. Among the expansions checked, Survivors of the Void has the strongest combination of substantial additions and positive Steam reception. Seekers of the Storm merits more caution; the other scores also need to be read in context.
| Purchase | What it adds, according to the official listing | Steam user-review snapshot in 2026 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base game | Core randomized runs, survivors, items, stages, and solo/co-op play | 95% positive from 163,571 English reviews; search-result snapshot crawled about two weeks before October 11, 2026 | A strong reception signal among a large Steam sample, not a guarantee of fit. |
| Survivors of the Void (March 1, 2022) | Railgunner and Void Fiend, Void corruption and altered items, equipment, and items | 87% positive from 4,213 English reviews; recent sample 96% positive from 26 | The best-supported first expansion among those checked. The recent sample is small. |
| Seekers of the Storm (August 27, 2024) | Seeker, stages and variants, enemies, items, and The False Son encounter | 55% positive from 9,644 English reviews; recent sample 84% positive from 25 | Its all-time English score was Mixed. The more positive recent sample is too small to erase that context. |
| Alloyed Collective (November 18, 2025) | Operator and Drifter, seven stages and a variant, drones, items, enemies, and an alternate ending | 93% positive from 2,890 English reviews; recent sample 70% positive from 37 | Strong all-time snapshot, with a smaller and more mixed recent sample. |
| Hallowed Concepts (October 8, 2026) | Acolyte and Enforcer, regions and trials, enemies, Hexes, Hallowed Items, and the N’tormat | 83% positive from 750 reviews, three days after release | An early score, not settled consensus. |
The percentages and counts are Steam user-review snapshots accessed in 2026; they change over time and represent Steam reviewers, not console players or critics. Recent-review samples are especially small. Check the live listing for current reception rather than treating any figure here as a permanent rating. How DLC ownership works in co-op
DLC sharing is partial, not all-or-nothing. The Steam descriptions for Survivors of the Void, Alloyed Collective, and Hallowed Concepts say that one owner can enable some expansion content—such as its monsters, stages, or items—for the whole lobby. A player who does not own the expansion cannot choose its new survivors or permanently unlock its content. Nintendo gives similar guidance for the expansions included in its bundle. Verify the exact rule for the expansion and storefront you use; do not assume every platform handles every expansion identically.

Steam and Epic
Gearbox says crossplay between Steam and Epic is optional. Players need matching crossplay preferences, and changing the setting requires restarting the game. This does not establish universal crossplay between PC and consoles. Check Gearbox’s crossplay instructions.

PlayStation
The US PlayStation listing offers PS4 and PS5 editions and says one purchase grants access to both on the same account. It lists online co-op with up to three friends. Online play may require a paid platform subscription. This purchase entitlement is not the same as a promise that cross-generation co-op will remain available indefinitely.
Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s US digital bundle listing describes online and local wireless play for one to four players. Online play requires Nintendo Switch Online membership. Its compatibility information says the game behaves consistently on Switch 2 while warning that experience may differ on Switch Lite. Check Nintendo’s listing.
Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch support horizon
In a 2K Support notice published January 28, 2026 and updated October 8, 2026, 2K said future content would focus on PC, Xbox Series S/X, and PS5, and that it would no longer release future content for Xbox One, PS4, or Nintendo Switch. The notice said cross-generation co-op was still possible at that time, but would end between PS4 and PS5 and between Xbox One and Xbox Series after the next PlayStation and Xbox update. It also said PS4 and Xbox One owners upgrading to the corresponding newer console would receive that version and previously purchased DLC at no additional cost. Because the notice describes a future change, confirm its current status before organizing a group around cross-generation play. Read the 2K support notice.
Should you buy a bundle or individual DLC?
Prices vary by region, platform, storefront, and promotion, so compare the live price and exact contents where you intend to play. The US PlayStation listing showed a five-item bundle—the base game plus all four expansions—at $38.49, discounted from $69.99, with an offer end date of October 22, 2026. That was a time-limited listing, not an evergreen price. Nintendo’s reviewed digital bundle included the base game, Survivors of the Void, Seekers of the Storm, and Alloyed Collective, but not Hallowed Concepts. Check the listing rather than assuming a bundle contains every expansion.

- Perfect for family and adult game nights ages ten and up: Build memorable moments with accessible rules that teach quickly while offering the strategic depth that appeals to experienced board game enthusiasts
A practical buying path is to begin with the base game if you are uncertain. If you already enjoy it and want more content, Survivors of the Void is the most strongly supported first DLC choice in the Steam snapshots above. Consider Seekers of the Storm with its Mixed all-time Steam score in mind, and treat the newer expansions’ recent or early scores as limited evidence. For a group, check each player’s platform, DLC ownership, and the applicable crossplay rules before buying for everyone.
