Hallowed Concepts is most worth buying if you already enjoy replaying Risk of Rain 2 and want new survivors, stages, Trials, and systems built around trading risk for power. It is less compelling if you mainly want the free October 8 update or would rather wait for more than a first-day sample of player feedback.
What does Hallowed Concepts add?
The paid expansion adds playable characters, run content, enemies, items, and a new risk-and-reward layer. The official launch information lists:

- Two survivors: Enforcer, available by default, and Acolyte, who must be unlocked.
- The N’tormat Curio: collected pages grant abilities at a cost.
- New threats and locations: three enemies, three bosses, a new elite type, three standard stages, and several Trial stages.

- New items: 14 Hexes, 11 Hallowed items, and three standard items.
- Unlocks and music: survivor skins and new music by DLC3 composer Stavros Markonis, including a track by Nando Garza.
These content counts come from the official launch materials and 2K’s October 8, 2026 patch notes. The expansion’s central hook is not simply more upgrades: its description connects Hexes and N’tormat abilities with costs and tradeoffs, so gaining power can also raise the stakes.
Survivors and Trials
Enforcer is presented as a defensive vanguard with tactical movement. Acolyte combines close-range glaive attacks with ranged strikes and bargains with her life force. Trials emphasize endurance, hunting, and racing against time, giving players additional structured challenges alongside the standard stages.

Do your friends need to own the DLC?
On Steam, the store listing says one lobby member owning Hallowed Concepts enables its monsters, levels, and items to appear for the whole lobby. A player who does not own it cannot select the new survivors or permanently unlock the expansion’s items, logbooks, or other content. That means a group can encounter shared DLC content with one Steam owner, but each player who wants the full unlock progression and survivor access needs a copy. Check the rule for your platform if you are not playing on Steam.
What is free in the October 8 update?
Not every change released alongside Hallowed Concepts is part of the paid expansion. The October 8 update also adds unlockable skills for Commando, Huntress, Acrid, Artificer, Engineer, and REX, plus an optional Karma system that can make the final moon confrontation more challenging. Official notes classify these as changes affecting the base game or prior DLC, separate from purchasable Hallowed Concepts content. The patch also includes balance changes and bug fixes across the base game and earlier DLC.

What do early reviews and platform details tell you?
Steam showed 90% positive from 371 user reviews on October 9, 2026, and classified the expansion’s overall reviews as “Very Positive.” That is a useful initial signal, but it is a fast-changing snapshot from roughly one day after launch—not a mature assessment of balance or long-term quality.

Should you buy Hallowed Concepts or wait?
Buy if you want more run variety
The clearest case for buying is that you already enjoy repeated Risk of Rain 2 runs and expect to play the new survivors, explore the added stages, or take on Trials. The expansion brings new ways to approach a run, while the Curio, Hex, and Hallowed systems add a challenge-and-reward dimension.
Wait if the free update is what interests you
If you mainly want the new skills or optional Karma system, those are part of the separate update rather than the paid DLC. Waiting also makes sense if you are unsure about the risk-for-power mechanics or want a larger review sample before deciding.

Check the purchase details that matter to your group
Hallowed Concepts requires the base game. Check the current price and availability in your region and storefront, since pricing and review counts can change. For a Steam co-op group, decide who wants permanent unlocks and survivor access: shared encounters can appear with one owner, but non-owners do not receive the expansion’s full progression rights.
