Revolut can be safe for a UK customer, but the answer depends on which legal entity and product hold your money. A balance in a Revolut Bank UK Ltd current account is an eligible bank deposit and can receive Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protection. A balance in a Revolut Ltd e-money account is safeguarded separately, but it is not covered by FSCS deposit insurance. Savings, investments, cryptoassets and commodities can have different providers and rules.
Because the UK migration from e-money accounts to bank accounts is being phased in, a Revolut-branded account is not automatically a bank account. Check the entity and account type shown in your app before deciding how much protection applies.

Why the name “Revolut” is not enough
Revolut operates different UK arrangements. The legal entity named on your account determines the regulator, the type of claim you would make if the firm failed and the protection available.

Revolut Bank UK Ltd received approval to launch as a UK bank after the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) lifted restrictions on its licence in March 2026. Its eligible customer deposits fall within the FSCS deposit-protection framework. The bank is rolling out current accounts gradually, so the licence approval does not mean every existing customer has already moved to the bank.

Revolut Ltd e-money accounts
Customers who have not migrated may still hold an e-money account with Revolut Ltd. Revolut says money in those accounts is safeguarded in accounts at regulated institutions or invested in high-quality liquid assets, separately from the firm’s ordinary operating money. Safeguarding is a different legal mechanism from FSCS insurance. It does not create the same statutory deposit-compensation claim or a stated seven-day payout timetable.
How to identify your arrangement
- Open the Revolut app and go to your profile or account details.
- Look for the registered legal entity and the account type. The wording and menu location can change with app versions.
- Save a statement or screenshot showing that information, especially if you are notified of an upcoming migration.
- Use the account-specific information in the app rather than assuming that a general statement about Revolut’s UK banking licence applies to your balance today.
Revolut says eligible customers are notified before migration from an e-money account to a bank account. Until that change is completed, treat the account according to the entity currently displayed.
How much protection does a Revolut bank deposit have?
For failures from 1 December 2025, FSCS protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm. The limit was previously £85,000. It is an aggregate limit for the authorised firm, not a separate allowance for every account or currency balance.

- If you hold several eligible accounts under the same banking authorisation, FSCS adds them together when applying the limit.
- Two accounts containing £70,000 each at the same authorised firm are not protected for £140,000; the firm-level total is assessed against the single-person limit.
- Two joint account holders normally have a separate limit for each eligible person, subject to FSCS rules and eligibility.
- Money above the applicable limit is not covered by FSCS compensation if the bank fails, even though the account itself is eligible.
Eligibility is governed by FSCS rules. The £120,000 figure is the current limit for the period stated above, not a promise that every type of balance or every customer qualifies.

What happens after a bank failure?
If Revolut Bank UK Ltd failed, an eligible deposit would follow the FSCS bank-failure process rather than the e-money safeguarding process. FSCS says it typically aims to pay deposit compensation within seven days. “Typically” describes the scheme’s target for covered deposits; it is not a guarantee that every customer will have uninterrupted access or that every case will be resolved immediately.
The amount is calculated across your eligible balances at the failed authorised firm. Keep your bank statements and evidence of account ownership available in case the scheme or an administrator needs to verify your claim.
What happens if a Revolut e-money account fails?
Revolut’s explanation of e-money safeguarding is that customer funds are kept apart from the company’s operating money, either in safeguarded accounts with regulated institutions or in high-quality liquid assets. Its bankruptcy guidance says customer claims would be paid from dedicated client-money bank and asset accounts.
Why safeguarding is not the same as FSCS
Safeguarding does not turn an e-money balance into a bank deposit. There is no FSCS deposit-insurance limit to quote for that balance, and the FSCS bank-deposit payout guidance does not automatically set the timing for returning safeguarded funds. If Revolut Ltd became insolvent, recovery would depend on the safeguarding structure, the insolvency administration and the process for reconciling customer claims.
Rank #3
The available provider guidance does not establish a guaranteed recovery date or a guaranteed percentage recovery for a hypothetical Revolut Ltd insolvency. Do not describe safeguarded money as “FSCS-protected cash,” and do not promise that it would be returned within seven days.
Practical steps for an e-money customer
- Confirm in the app that the balance is an e-money account with Revolut Ltd.
- Download recent statements and record the balance and currency before any service disruption.
- Maintain a separate payment method and enough accessible money elsewhere for essential bills while an insolvency process is sorted out.
- Read any formal insolvency or customer-claims instructions from the administrator; those instructions, rather than a bank-deposit timetable, would control the claim.
Do savings, stocks, crypto and commodities have the same protection?
No. A Revolut account can contain products supplied by different entities, so the protection attached to one product cannot be carried over to another.
| Product or balance | Typical entity or arrangement described for UK customers | Protection if the provider fails | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current account held with Revolut Bank UK Ltd | UK bank deposit | Eligible deposits fall under FSCS rules, up to £120,000 per person per authorised firm for failures from 1 December 2025 | Confirm the bank entity and add balances held under the same authorisation |
| E-money account with Revolut Ltd | Safeguarded customer funds | Safeguarding is separate from FSCS; no guaranteed payout date is established | Read the entity and account type in the app |
| Savings product | Deposit held through a partner bank | Partner-bank FSCS protection may apply if the deposit and customer are eligible | Identify the partner bank and aggregate deposits already held there |
| Stocks, cryptoassets or commodities | Separate investment or trading entities | Not covered by Revolut Bank UK Ltd’s bank-deposit protection; product-specific rules differ | Check the contracting entity, asset custody and applicable protection documents |
Partner-bank savings
Revolut’s UK material says its savings product is held through partner banks. If a partner bank is the depositor’s authorised firm, FSCS eligibility and the £120,000 limit are assessed against that bank, including any other eligible deposits you already hold there. The relevant partner name matters more than the Revolut brand on the app screen.
Investments and cryptoassets
Stocks, cryptoassets and commodities are not deposits at Revolut Bank UK Ltd. Their value can fluctuate, and their custody, insolvency treatment and customer protections depend on the separate entity and product terms. The bank’s deposit guarantee should not be used to describe these holdings.

What “safe” does—and does not—mean
Authorisation and failure protection answer only one part of the safety question. They address what may happen to eligible money if a particular regulated entity becomes insolvent. They do not prove that an account can never be frozen, that an outage cannot prevent payments, or that every fraud claim will be accepted.
Account restrictions and outages
A provider can temporarily restrict an account for checks, suspected fraud, legal requirements or operational reasons. A banking licence and FSCS eligibility do not guarantee uninterrupted app access. Keep an alternative way to pay essential bills and do not rely on one app for all short-term cash needs.
Scams and authorised payments
A Financial Ombudsman decision involving a Revolut Ltd customer concerned authorised payments linked to an alleged investment scam. It was a case-specific dispute about that customer’s facts and the legal starting point for authorised payments; it is not evidence that Revolut is generally unsafe or automatically liable for every scam loss. Treat an unfamiliar investment request, urgent transfer or “safe account” instruction as a fraud warning and contact the firm through its official in-app channel.

FSCS protection is not a guarantee that every complaint will be upheld or that support will always be fast. Keep records of messages, payment references and dates. If a dispute is not resolved through the firm’s complaints process, the Financial Ombudsman route may be relevant to an eligible complaint, but its decisions remain fact-specific.

What to do before keeping a large balance with Revolut
- Classify the balance. In the app, record whether it is a Revolut Bank UK Ltd deposit, a Revolut Ltd e-money balance, a partner-bank savings deposit or an investment product.
- Map the protection. For a bank deposit, check FSCS eligibility and total all eligible balances at the same authorised firm. For savings, identify the partner bank and perform the same check there.
- Separate operating cash from long-term holdings. Do not assume that stocks, cryptoassets or commodities share the current-account protection.
- Stay below limits where that is your objective. If you need full FSCS coverage, consider how balances are distributed across authorised firms; opening multiple accounts under one authorisation does not create extra coverage.
- Prepare for access problems. Keep another bank account, an alternative card and a current record of recurring payments so a temporary restriction or outage does not stop essential commitments.
- Monitor migration notices. A move from e-money to bank status can change the protection mechanism. Read the notice and verify the new entity after migration rather than relying on an old statement.
How to compare Revolut with another provider
A useful comparison is about legal structure, not app features alone. Ask the same four questions of every provider:
- Which legal entity holds the money, and which regulator authorises it?
- What is the account type? Is it a bank deposit, safeguarded e-money balance, partner-bank deposit or investment asset?
- What protection mechanism and limit apply? Confirm whether protection is FSCS compensation, safeguarding or another arrangement, and whether balances aggregate per person and firm.
- What is the failure process? Look for the scheme’s stated timing or the provider’s insolvency instructions, and distinguish a typical target from a guaranteed deadline.
Using these questions prevents a common error: treating every balance displayed in one app as if it had the same legal protection.
Bottom line for a UK customer
Revolut is not one single protection category. A migrated account held by Revolut Bank UK Ltd can receive FSCS protection for eligible deposits, while an unmigrated Revolut Ltd e-money account relies on safeguarding rather than FSCS insurance. Savings may depend on a partner bank, and investments or cryptoassets follow separate arrangements. The decisive step is to check the legal entity and product shown for your own account, then apply the corresponding failure process and limit.
