Red Dead Redemption 2 builds its story around Arthur Morgan’s loyalty, ideals and a gang coming apart, but it remains unmistakably an outlaw Western. The recommendation is a judgment based on the game’s official descriptions, not a claim that Western skeptics generally enjoy it.
What is the story about?
Set in America in 1899, as the Wild West era is ending, the game follows Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang after a robbery goes wrong in Blackwater. Fleeing lawmen and bounty hunters, the group faces growing internal divisions. Arthur must weigh his own ideals against loyalty to the gang that raised him. Rockstar’s description and PlayStation’s game page frame it as a sprawling story at the dawn of the modern age.

For someone unsure about Westerns, the potential draw is the gang’s relationships and Arthur’s personal conflict—not simply cowboy imagery or gunfights. Calling it a character drama is an interpretation of that premise, rather than an independent consensus about the writing.

How much Western do you have to accept?
A lot. The setting and plot explicitly involve the Wild West, an outlaw gang, a Western town, lawmen, bounty hunters and travel across the American heartland. The ESRB’s rating summary also describes an open-world Wild West with mission objectives and gunfights against lawmen and outlaws. This is not a story that merely borrows a few frontier visuals.

- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun;Engage in conversation with people you meet. Your actions influence Arthur's honour;Horses are a cowboy's best friend, both transport and personal companion;Bond with your horse as you ride together to unlock new abilities
- If you dislike cowboy imagery but enjoy ensemble stories, moral conflict and a group under pressure, the premise may still work for you.
- If outlaw plots, frontier settings, gunplay or Western conventions themselves are what put you off, the central story is built from those ingredients.
What to consider before choosing it for the story
It is a story inside an open-world action-adventure
The official pages present Red Dead Redemption 2 as an open-world game, not a story-only experience. If you want a tightly paced narrative with little gameplay between plot developments, that format may be a poor fit. The available descriptions do not establish a playtime figure, so this is a format consideration rather than a claim about how long the story takes.
The gang is an ensemble, not just Arthur’s solo journey
Sony’s 2018 PlayStation Blog preview describes the gang as family-like and discusses shared camp activities and conversations. That makes the group’s bonds part of the premise, which may appeal if you like ensemble drama; it does not guarantee that every player will connect with the characters.

- When federal agents threaten his family, former outlaw John Marston is forced to hunt down the gang of criminals he once called friends.
- Experience Marston’s journey across the sprawling expanses of the American West and Mexico as he fights to bury his blood-stained past in the critically acclaimed predecessor to the 2018 blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Also included is Undead Nightmare, the iconic horror story that transforms the world of Red Dead Redemption into an apocalyptic fight for survival against a zombie horde.
Check the mature-content rating
The ESRB rates the game M for Mature 17+ for blood and gore, intense violence, nudity, sexual content, strong language, and drug and alcohol use. Its summary describes graphic combat, violent cutscenes and brief sexual material. Those elements may matter even if the story premise appeals.

Verdict: who should try it?
Try Red Dead Redemption 2 for its story if you can tolerate an outlaw-Western world and want a sprawling account of loyalty, personal judgment and a family-like group under strain. Skip it if the Western premise itself is the problem, or if you want a tightly paced story without an open-world game around it. There is no established source-backed consensus about whether people who dislike Westerns enjoy it, so the fit is necessarily personal.
