Yes. Puppeteer is distributed under the Apache License 2.0, which generally allows commercial use subject to the license’s terms. That answer applies to Puppeteer itself—not automatically to the browser it installs or to websites you automate. For production or client work, check all three separately.
What “free for commercial use” covers
The Puppeteer project identifies its software as Apache-2.0 licensed, and the puppeteer-core package metadata also specifies Apache-2.0. Commercial use of the library is generally permitted under that license, but this is a practical summary, not legal advice. Review the Apache-2.0 license and confirm the license files for the exact version you ship.

Check the browser and website separately
Browser installation
The puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome during installation. puppeteer-core installs the automation library without downloading Chrome, so you provide and manage the browser yourself. Check the terms that apply to the specific browser distribution and deployment arrangement; Puppeteer’s license does not settle those terms. The Puppeteer README and installation guide documents the package distinction.

Website access
A license to use Puppeteer is not permission to automate every website. Check the target site’s terms and any rules that apply to your work, particularly when capturing pages for customers or running automation in production. Puppeteer’s security policy places responsibility for safe and intended use on the code that calls the project.
Take a website screenshot with Puppeteer
The official guide’s basic flow is to launch a browser, open a page, navigate to a URL, save the screenshot, then close the browser. Install the package and use this Node.js example:

Installation and runtime problems
- Browser executable missing: The default
puppeteerinstallation downloads compatible Chrome, whilepuppeteer-coredoes not. With modern package managers that block install scripts, the download may not run. Follow the project’s documented manual browser installation option or configure a browser executable that is already installed. - Navigation never settles: A page may maintain long-running network connections, making a network-idle condition unsuitable. Choose a wait condition that matches the page, or wait for a specific selector or a deliberate delay when appropriate.
- Screenshot file is missing or incomplete: Check that navigation and screenshot calls completed before closing the browser, and ensure the process can write to the target path. For lazy-loaded content, wait for the content you need before capturing.
- Permission or policy concern: Separate the question of whether you may use the library from whether the browser distribution and target-site access are permitted for your project.

Is Puppeteer the same as Chrome?
No. Puppeteer is an automation library. The puppeteer package downloads compatible Chrome by default; puppeteer-core does not download a browser.
