There is no reliable universal repair-cost percentage or age cutoff. Weigh the projector’s performance and connectivity, repair eligibility, parts availability, and the cost of downtime—not just the repair bill.
How to decide whether to repair or replace a projector
Start with a diagnosis, not a guess based on age or symptoms alone. Ask the technician for a written estimate that names the failed component, confirms parts availability, and states whether the repair is covered by a warranty. Then compare the repair’s total cost and expected downtime with a replacement that provides the brightness, connections, and features you actually need.

Lamp replacement on a lamp-based projector
A dimming image or lamp warning can point to a worn lamp, but confirm the projector’s exact model and follow its manufacturer’s guidance before ordering a part. For the Epson PowerLite 8300i specifically, Epson says the lamp typically lasts about 3,000 hours in low-brightness mode or 2,000 hours in high-brightness mode. Epson advises considering replacement if the image darkens or deteriorates, a replacement message appears, or the warning light indicates the lamp has burned out. Before buying a lamp, verify the full model identifier and manufacturer part number. A similar-looking lamp or a lifespan figure from another model does not establish compatibility.
Laser light-source service
Laser projectors generally do not use a conventional user-replaceable lamp, but their light source can still require service. BenQ’s India FAQ for the GV50 gives an estimated laser-source life of about 20,000–30,000 hours and says the source is not user-serviceable. Panasonic’s guidance for its PT-RZ970, PT-RZ770, and PT-RZ660 series recommends dealer inspection, cleaning, and light-source replacement after about 20,000 hours; Panasonic estimates output at about 50% of original at that point under specified operating conditions. These are model-family recommendations, not guarantees for every laser projector.

Cooling, optical, or electronic component faults
Fan or cooling problems, color-wheel or imaging-chip faults, LCD-panel or lens damage, and board failures may call for diagnosis and component-level repair rather than a routine consumable replacement. A Hyderabad repair provider lists these categories among its services, but that list does not establish what is repairable or economical for your projector. Check repair availability and the real cost
Support can end at different times for different models, and fees may separate labor or technical charges from parts. Check the manufacturer’s repair or support page for your exact model and country, then request a local written quote. Epson Japan’s live home-projector repair list, for example, shows model-specific eligibility periods and itemized base and technical fees, with parts charged separately; Epson notes that fees may change. A Hyderabad provider lists repair ranges of ₹1,500–₹15,000 for many repairs, with higher ranges for some components. Compare the repair with a suitable replacement
Use a replacement that would genuinely do the same job as the current projector—not simply the cheapest available unit. Compare these factors before deciding:

- Resulting performance: decide whether the repaired unit will still meet current brightness, connectivity, and feature needs.
- Repair type: distinguish a model-specific lamp replacement from dealer-handled laser-source work or an internal component repair.
Sharp’s 2024 article also notes that a projector may be worth replacing when newer brightness or features, or changed communication needs, make the old unit a poor fit—even if it can be repaired. It quotes practitioner John Linden as saying there generally is not an obvious sign that a projector is about to fail; he describes possible edge discoloration on LCD projectors or noise before DLP projectors fail. - What comparable replacement should I use when weighing this quote?
