It is not a Nintendo release
Nothing in the project’s documentation establishes endorsement, publication, distribution or technical support by Nintendo or The Pokémon Company. Calling it an “official Pokémon game” would therefore be inaccurate. It is best described as a fan-made GBA ROM hack or fan project.

Heart & Soul versus the official HeartGold and SoulSilver games
The similar names are the main source of confusion. Pokémon HeartGold Version and Pokémon SoulSilver Version are official Nintendo Pokémon games for Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems. Heart & Soul is an independent GBA project with its own patch, mechanics and compatibility rules.

The names do not indicate that Heart & Soul is a remake, prototype or alternate edition of HeartGold or SoulSilver. It is a separate fan project that draws on the broader Johto setting.
What is included in the current release?
The project homepage identifies version v2.0.4, released August 28, 2026. Version numbers are important because mechanics, save handling and setup instructions can change between releases. Check the project’s release page for the build you intend to use rather than following an old guide written for version 1.x or an earlier 2.0 build.

Some of these systems may be optional settings rather than mandatory rules for every playthrough. Read the documentation for your exact build before starting a save, especially if you plan to use a randomizer, challenge mode or custom progression settings.
What you need before installing it
Prepare the following items before opening a patching utility:
- Your own legally obtained Pokémon – Emerald Version (U).gba ROM. The “(U)” designation refers to the US-region ROM expected by the project’s instructions.
- The Heart & Soul UPS patch for the version you want to play, such as v2.0.4.
- A UPS-compatible patching utility.
- A compatible Game Boy Advance emulator or hardware setup. The project lists mGBA for PC and Mac and mGBA-based setups for other platforms.
- A separate folder for the untouched Emerald ROM, the patch file and the newly created patched ROM.
The patch site does not provide the underlying Emerald ROM. Do not assume that a file advertised as a “pre-patched” download is an official release or an authorized substitute for creating the patched file yourself.

Names differ between patching utilities, but the operation follows the same order. Keep the original Emerald file unchanged so you can verify the input or make another build later.

- Verify the release. Confirm that the UPS patch and its instructions are for the same Heart & Soul version. For the current release identified by the project, that is v2.0.4, dated August 28, 2026.
- Back up the base ROM. Copy your legally obtained Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM into a working folder. Do not overwrite the original file.
- Open a UPS-compatible patcher. Choose the utility’s option labeled “Apply UPS patch,” “Patch file” or equivalent.
- Select the patch. When prompted for the patch file, choose the Heart & Soul UPS file for your selected release.
- Select the source ROM. When the utility asks for the input or original file, select your Pokémon Emerald Version (U) ROM. A different region, a different game or an already modified ROM may fail or produce an unsupported result.
- Choose an output filename. Save the patched result under a new name, such as a version-specific Heart & Soul filename. Never save over the clean Emerald ROM.
- Open the patched file in your emulator. In mGBA or another compatible emulator, use its normal “Open ROM” command and select the newly created patched file.
- Test the build before investing time. Start a new game, confirm that the title and opening sequence identify the intended project version, and create a temporary save. If the emulator reports a bad patch or the game does not boot, stop and verify the ROM region, patch version and patching order.
The patching process does not turn the project into an official Nintendo game. It only applies the project’s modifications to the game data supplied as the patch input.
Save compatibility and upgrading between versions
Version changes can affect save data. The project specifically warns that saves made before version 2.0 are incompatible with v2.0.4. Plan on starting a new game when moving from a pre-2.0 build to v2.0.4; do not assume that copying an old save file will work.
Safer upgrade practice
- Keep the old ROM and its save file in a separate folder.
- Back up saves before replacing an emulator ROM.
- Read the release notes for the exact version you are installing.
- Use a new in-game save for v2.0.4 unless the project explicitly confirms compatibility with your earlier build.
- Do not judge a failed migration by renaming a save file; file names alone cannot make an incompatible save valid.
Multiplayer: what will and will not connect
The project describes multiplayer compatibility as limited to compatible Heart & Soul 2.0 or fork builds. It is not compatible with official Pokémon games, Heart & Soul 1.x, Modern Emerald or unrelated pokeemerald-expansion projects.

Legal and practical cautions
Use your own game data
The project’s instructions ask players to use a legally obtained Emerald ROM. That is a project requirement, not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion about ROM dumping, copying or circumvention. Laws differ by country, so consult the rules that apply where you live. The safest practical approach is to obtain the source game lawfully and avoid downloading an unauthorized copy of Nintendo’s ROM.
Do not mistake a patch for a commercial product
Heart & Soul is not sold as a Nintendo cartridge, does not come with official Pokémon support and should not be represented as a licensed remake. If you see a physical cart or download claiming to be an official Heart & Soul release, that claim is inconsistent with the project’s stated status.
Protect your files
- Download patches only from the project’s own release channels.
- Scan unfamiliar files and avoid executables bundled with ROM downloads.
- Keep clean and patched ROMs clearly separated.
- Back up saves before changing emulator versions or ROM builds.
Common problems and fixes
The patcher rejects the file
Confirm that the source is the US Pokémon Emerald Version ROM specified by the project, that the patch is a UPS file for the same release, and that you selected “apply UPS” rather than a different patch format. Re-download the patch from the project’s release page if its file is incomplete.

Try the patch again with an untouched source ROM and a current compatible emulator. Do not stack another ROM hack or an old Heart & Soul patch onto the file. If the project lists a required emulator setting for your release, follow that version-specific guidance.

An old save does not appear
Pre-2.0 saves are explicitly incompatible with v2.0.4. Start a new game for the current release and retain the older save with the older ROM.
A multiplayer partner cannot connect
Check the exact build on both sides. Official Pokémon games, Heart & Soul 1.x, Modern Emerald and unrelated pokeemerald-expansion projects are outside the compatibility described for Heart & Soul 2.0 multiplayer.
Is it worth playing?
Heart & Soul makes sense for players who want a fan-created GBA interpretation of Johto, are comfortable patching their own Emerald ROM and accept that updates, saves and multiplayer support follow the project’s rules rather than Nintendo’s. It is a poor fit if you need an official release, Nintendo customer support, guaranteed compatibility with commercial Pokémon games or a plug-and-play cartridge.
