The catch is that claimed games are playable only while your membership is active, so weigh the games you expect to enjoy against the subscription cost—not the headline value of every title offered.
Is PS Plus worth it if I only play the monthly games?
Start with Essential, which includes monthly games as well as online multiplayer, discounts, Share Play, and cloud storage. Whether it is worth paying for depends on how often the monthly selection includes games you want to play and how much use you get from them. There is no universal dollar value for the lineup: the games change, and players differ in what they enjoy and would otherwise buy.

Estimate your cost per game you actually play
Use the annual Essential price and count only the monthly games you realistically expect to play in a year. Divide $79.99 by that number for a rough cost per game played, using the U.S. annual price recorded in 2026. This is a simple budgeting calculation, not a Sony statistic or a claim about each game’s market price. If you would play only one or two titles, the calculation may look very different from a year in which several monthly picks appeal to you.

A useful test is: would you have bought or played these games anyway, and how many are you likely to play before renewal? If the lineup rarely interests you, paying for Essential solely in hope of future picks may not suit you.
How do PlayStation Plus monthly games work?
Sony adds new monthly games each calendar month. Members can add them to their library and download and play them at no extra cost while they have an active membership. Do you keep PlayStation Plus monthly games forever?
You can add a monthly game to your library, but that does not make it an unrestricted permanent purchase. You can play it while your Plus membership is active. The relevant distinction is membership access versus ownership: the subscription gives access under its terms, rather than the same lasting entitlement as buying a game outright.

Can you play claimed PS Plus games without a subscription?
No. Sony says an active membership plan is required to play monthly games. Claiming a game preserves it in your library for access under that membership condition; it does not remove the requirement.
When should you consider Extra or Premium?
Extra and Premium include Essential benefits, including monthly games, but add separate features. They are worth considering for a monthly-games player only if those additional features are likely to earn their extra cost for that person.

Compare the tiers by the incremental price over Essential, how many extra catalog games you would actually play, and whether you would use Premium-only features. Online multiplayer
If you play multiplayer games that require Plus, this benefit may contribute real value beyond the monthly lineup. Sony says most PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, though some do not. Extra and Premium features
Count catalog access, Classics Catalog games, trials, or cloud streaming only if you expect to use them. Their presence in a higher tier does not make the monthly games themselves more valuable.

What should PS4 players consider?
Sony’s current U.S. page says PS4 games will be added to the monthly games lineup only intermittently from January 2026. That is a change in how often to expect additions, not a statement that PS4 monthly games have stopped entirely. A practical decision checklist
- Check the current Essential price for the billing period you would actually choose, and account for automatic renewal.
- Look at a typical year of monthly selections and estimate how many games you would genuinely play, not how many are offered.
- Divide the annual Essential price by your estimated number of games played to get a rough cost per game played.
- Add value for other benefits only when you use them, such as required online multiplayer.
- Compare Extra or Premium only if their added catalog or features justify the incremental price for you.
