Planet Zoo 2 is Steam Deck Verified and runs on SteamOS. Expect a generally playable experience around a 30 FPS target, with dips in busy zoos. The default controls pass Valve’s compatibility checks, but a mouse-style trackpad layout can make detailed construction and management menus more comfortable.
What Steam Deck Verified means for Planet Zoo 2
The Verified badge is a compatibility result, not a promise of a fixed frame rate in every park. SteamDB’s recorded compatibility test, dated 11 September 2026, reports that Planet Zoo 2 works on SteamOS and that all functionality is accessible with the default controller configuration.

| Compatibility check | Result |
|---|---|
| Operating system | SteamOS runs successfully |
| Controller configuration | All functionality is accessible with the default layout |
| Controller prompts | Controller icons are shown |
| Interface | Text is legible on the Deck screen |
| Graphics preset | Default graphics configuration performs well on Deck |
| First-time setup | An active internet connection is required |

- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
| Component | Listed minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Graphics | GeForce RTX 2060, Radeon RX 5600 XT or Intel Arc A750 class |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 |
| Storage | 40 GB |
Those are Windows-PC specifications, not a Deck-specific guarantee. Proton and the SteamOS compatibility layer allow the game to run on Deck, but the figures should not be read as a direct comparison with Deck hardware. The Verified result and independent Deck observations are more useful for deciding how it actually plays on the handheld.
Planet Zoo 2 performance on Steam Deck
What frame rate to expect
Steam Deck HQ found the built-in Steam Deck preset well optimized. Its test produced a mostly stable 30 FPS experience, with occasional stutters and dips while navigating, particularly during zooming. That makes the game suitable for normal park management, building and exploration, but not a locked-high-refresh-rate showcase.
Performance is workload-dependent. A compact habitat area can feel smooth while a mature park with many guests, animals, staff routines and scenery becomes more demanding. Future patches, driver changes and the individual layout of a zoo can move the result in either direction.

The recommended baseline settings
- Open Planet Zoo 2 and select the built-in Steam Deck graphics preset.
- Open the SteamOS performance controls and set a 30 FPS frame-rate limit. The game does not provide its own in-game frame limiter, so the operating-system cap is the practical way to control frame pacing and power use.
- Play a representative section of your zoo, including camera movement and zooming, before changing image-quality options.
- Keep the baseline if the frame rate is acceptable. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which adjustment helped.
A cap does not create performance that the hardware cannot deliver; it prevents the game from rendering above the chosen ceiling and gives you a consistent target. Dips can still occur when the simulation becomes CPU-limited.
When a busy park starts to dip
Steam Deck HQ reports two practical levers:
- Use FSR 3 Balanced: changing from TAA to FSR 3 Balanced delivered an extra 2–3 FPS in that test. The trade-off is reduced image quality compared with TAA, which can be more noticeable on fine foliage, signs and distant scenery.
- Limit guests: the review recommends keeping a park around 1,500–2,000 guests with the in-game guest limiter. More guests increase CPU activity, so reducing the population can help a crowded zoo remain closer to its target.
Apply the guest limit before deleting scenery or rebuilding habitats. It changes the simulation load while preserving the work you have already done. If FSR makes text or animal details too soft, return to TAA and accept a lower frame rate during the heaviest moments.

Power, heat and battery life
In Steam Deck HQ’s workload, the game used roughly 17–20 W and reached about 65–70°C. The same test estimated approximately 2.5 hours of play on an OLED Deck and 1.5 hours on an LCD Deck.
| Measurement | Observed result | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| System power | 17–20 W | Steam Deck HQ review workload |
| Temperature | About 65–70°C | Steam Deck HQ review workload |
| OLED battery runtime | Approximately 2.5 hours | Review estimate, not a universal battery rating |
| LCD battery runtime | Approximately 1.5 hours | Review estimate, not a universal battery rating |
Treat these numbers as directional rather than guaranteed. Brightness, audio volume, frame-limit behavior, ambient temperature, battery health, zoo complexity and later patches all affect runtime and heat.
Are the controls good on Steam Deck?
They are functional out of the box. The official compatibility check found that all functionality is available through the default controller configuration, with controller prompts displayed correctly and interface text considered legible.
Planet Zoo 2 is nevertheless a menu-heavy management game. Selecting small interface controls, positioning objects precisely and moving through construction tools can feel slower with a purely analog layout than with a mouse. That is a comfort and precision issue, not an incompatibility problem.
Default layout: the right starting point
- Use the default Deck layout for your first session.
- Confirm that camera movement, construction, menus and animal-management actions are all reachable.
- Keep it if you mostly manage habitats and do not need pixel-level placement.
Trackpad-as-mouse workaround
A community layout provides a more PC-like alternative. It maps the right trackpad to mouse movement, the triggers to mouse clicks and the left stick to camera movement. This can make detailed building and dense menus easier because the trackpad provides direct cursor positioning instead of relying entirely on analog navigation.

Community layouts can change independently of the game. If a layout uses different button labels or conflicts with a future update, edit the bindings rather than assuming the game itself is broken. Save a copy of any layout that feels comfortable so you can restore it after switching configurations.

One launch-period user report describes RB performing two actions in exploration mode, including opening or cycling menus while running. This is not part of the official compatibility finding and may have been fixed by a patch. If you encounter it, test the default layout after updating the game, then remap the conflicting exploration action in the controller settings. Consider it a remapping issue unless the behavior persists across layouts and current versions.
Recommended first-session setup
- Install and launch while online. First-time setup requires an active internet connection according to the compatibility record.
- Begin with the Steam Deck preset. This gives you the configuration that performed well in the independent Deck test.
- Set the SteamOS frame limit to 30 FPS. There is no corresponding limiter inside the game.
- Use the default controller layout. Test every major mode before changing bindings.
- Try a trackpad/mouse layout if menus feel cumbersome. Prefer one that assigns the right trackpad to cursor movement and the triggers to clicks.
- Build a small test habitat. Pan, rotate, zoom and place several objects before committing hours to a large franchise park.
- Watch a busy section of the park. If navigation stutters, note whether the problem appears only while zooming or whenever guest numbers rise.
- Apply only the needed workaround. Try FSR 3 Balanced for a small performance gain, or set the guest limiter around 1,500–2,000 when simulation load is the cause.
Can you play a large zoo on Steam Deck?
Yes, but the experience becomes less predictable as the simulation grows. Guest count is a particularly visible pressure point because more visitors increase CPU work. Large parks can therefore remain playable while showing occasional dips during camera movement, zooming or busy simulation moments.
A sensible large-zoo approach is to keep the 30 FPS cap, monitor guest numbers and accept that a short dip is preferable to repeatedly changing settings during construction. If you need maximum consistency for a very large park, reduce guests before lowering every visual setting. The available testing does not establish a guaranteed guest count, a guaranteed frame rate for a particular zoo size or a difference in simulation performance between OLED and LCD models.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
| Decision factor | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Sustained performance in large zoos | Busy zoos can dip below the target on Deck | No model-specific large-zoo benchmark is provided |
| Controls and building precision | Both support the default controller configuration; a trackpad layout can help | No model-specific control advantage is established |
| Battery | About 2.5 hours OLED versus about 1.5 hours LCD in Steam Deck HQ’s test | Your runtime will vary with settings and workload |
| Screen readability | Interface text passed the compatibility check | No comparative screen-size or readability measurement is provided |
| Portability | Both are handheld Steam Deck systems | No separate portability test is provided |
Choose the OLED model primarily if the tested runtime difference matters to your sessions. Do not buy one expecting the Verified badge alone to guarantee smoother performance in a huge zoo.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game will not complete first launch
Connect the Deck to the internet and retry setup. The compatibility record specifically notes an active connection for first-time setup. Once setup completes, test the game again before changing Proton or controller settings.
Menus feel slow or inaccurate
Start with the default layout, then switch to a community configuration that uses the right trackpad as a mouse and the triggers as clicks. Adjust cursor sensitivity and click assignments in the controller editor. Keep the left stick for camera movement so cursor control and view control do not compete for the same input.
Frame rate drops during zooming
Keep the SteamOS cap at 30 FPS and test the Deck preset first. If the drop occurs mainly in a crowded park, lower the guest limit toward the 1,500–2,000 range used in Steam Deck HQ’s recommendation. If you need a small additional margin, test FSR 3 Balanced; revert to TAA if the visual softness is distracting.

Exploration mode triggers the wrong action
Update the game, reload the default layout and test RB again. If the overlap remains, assign the conflicting exploration action to another button. The reported behavior is a user observation rather than a confirmed universal defect.
The Deck runs hot or drains quickly
The measured 17–20 W draw and 65–70°C temperature show that this is a demanding workload. Use the 30 FPS cap, lower screen brightness when practical and avoid treating the review’s battery figures as guaranteed. A complex zoo can shorten runtime further.
Bottom line for Deck owners
Planet Zoo 2 clears the compatibility bar: it launches on SteamOS, exposes its functionality through the default controls and keeps its interface usable on Deck. The best practical setup is the Steam Deck preset with a SteamOS 30 FPS limit. For a busy park, a guest cap and FSR 3 Balanced are the main available performance levers, while a trackpad-and-trigger mouse layout is the most useful control workaround. Expect a handheld-friendly management game, not a guarantee of flawless frame pacing once your zoo becomes exceptionally crowded.
