Charging, setup, software updates, camera recording, navigation, gaming, video streaming and other demanding tasks can raise its temperature temporarily. Treat the situation as urgent when the phone shows a temperature warning or protective slowdown, stays unusually hot during ordinary use, or shows signs of battery damage. Stop using and charging a damaged, smoking or burning phone; leave the area and call emergency services if there is smoke or fire.
Temperature limits differ by model and manufacturer. Touch alone cannot tell you whether a battery is at a hazardous temperature, so use the phone’s warnings, what it was doing, the surrounding conditions and any physical changes to decide what to do.

When phone heat is normal—and when it is not
A phone converts electrical power into heat whenever its processor, modem, camera, display or charging system is working. A short period of warmth is expected when the workload is high or the battery is accepting power. Apple lists initial setup, restoring a backup, software updates, wireless charging, camera use, demanding apps and games, and high-quality video streaming as situations in which an iPhone or iPad may become warm temporarily. Samsung and Google describe similar effects on their phones.
Context matters more than a single sensation in your hand. A phone that is warm while installing an update and cools after the update is behaving differently from one that becomes hot while idle on a desk. Heat is also harder to shed in direct sunlight, a hot car, a poorly ventilated pocket or under bedding. Navigation in sunlight combines several of these factors: the display stays bright, the location and cellular radios work continuously, and the surrounding air may already be hot.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Warmth by itself does not prove that the battery is failing. A change in behavior is more informative. A temperature notice, paused charging, dimmed display, closed apps, sharply reduced performance or an automatic shutdown means the phone has activated a protective response and needs time to cool.
Use this triage before deciding what to do
| What you observe | Likely context | Immediate response |
|---|---|---|
| Warm during charging, setup, an update, gaming, recording or navigation; no warning | Temporary heat from a demanding task | Stop the demanding task if uncomfortable, move the phone to a cooler ventilated place and monitor whether it cools. |
| Temperature warning, charging pause, dim screen, closed apps, sluggish performance or shutdown | The device is limiting itself to prevent further heating | Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the phone to cool before resuming use or charging. |
| Hot while doing little or nothing, or repeatedly hot during ordinary use | Possible software, environmental, charging-equipment or hardware problem | Stop intensive use, check the environment and charging accessories, and contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if it persists. |
| Swelling, leakage, unusual smell, odd sounds, discoloration, physical damage or extreme heat | Possible battery damage | Stop using and charging it. Keep people away from the device and arrange professional handling. |
| Smoke, flames or an immediate threat of fire | Active lithium-ion battery fire or imminent fire | Leave, get outside and call emergency services. In the United States, call 911; Seattle Fire advises closing the door as you leave. |
Do not use a temperature number from one manufacturer as a universal battery threshold. Published figures describe particular products and conditions, not every phone.
Why a phone can get hot
High-power tasks
During setup or backup restoration, the phone may download data, index files and install applications at the same time. Updates can use the processor and radio continuously. Games, high-resolution video, camera recording and live streaming keep the processor, graphics hardware, display and network connection active. Heat should trend down after the task ends; if it does not, treat the persistence as a separate problem.

Charging and wireless charging
Charging naturally produces some heat, and wireless charging can add heat because energy crosses a gap rather than flowing directly through a cable. A warm surface, thick case or blocked ventilation can make that warmth more noticeable. Charging in direct sun or inside a vehicle combines charging heat with an already hot environment.
Hot surroundings and trapped heat
Sunlight through a window, a parked car, a warm room, a pocket under heavy clothing or a bed can prevent heat from escaping. Move the phone to shade and a hard, open surface. Do not put it in a freezer or against ice; sudden condensation and thermal shock can damage electronics.
Damaged or incompatible charging equipment
Samsung identifies damaged or incompatible chargers and cables as possible contributors to heating. Inspect the cable, connector and power adapter for fraying, bent contacts, looseness or burn marks. Check the phone maker’s compatibility guidance for your exact model. A compatible or manufacturer-approved replacement is appropriate only when the accessory is a plausible cause; replacing a charger will not repair a damaged battery.

What to do when the phone is too hot
- Stop the workload. End a game, camera recording, navigation session, hotspot or other demanding feature. If the phone is downloading or updating, do not repeatedly restart it; allow the process to finish unless the device gives different instructions.
- Change the environment. Move it out of direct sunlight, a vehicle or any enclosed, hot place. Set it on a cool, dry, hard surface with room around it for air to circulate. Remove a case only if doing so is safe and the case is trapping heat.
- Respond to a temperature notice. Follow the message on the screen. Apple’s iPhone and iPad guidance says to switch the device off, move it to a cooler environment away from direct sunlight and let it cool. Other manufacturers may present different prompts.
- Pause charging. If the phone is charging and there are no signs of battery damage, disconnect the charger while it cools. Samsung advises closing apps, waiting for the temperature to fall and then charging again.
- Recheck after cooling. Resume one activity at a time. If the same ordinary task quickly makes the phone hot again, record what was running, whether it was charging and the surrounding conditions before contacting support.
Never accelerate cooling with water, a freezer, an ice pack or a refrigerator. Moisture can enter through openings, and rapid temperature changes can create condensation inside the phone.
Charging heat that keeps coming back
First separate a one-time hot session from a repeatable pattern. Charge in a cool, ventilated place, remove direct sunlight and avoid using demanding apps while charging. Then inspect the cable and adapter. Damage at either end, intermittent connections, an adapter that is not intended for the phone, or a cable that becomes hot at one particular point are reasons to stop using that accessory and verify compatibility with the phone maker.
If a known-compatible charger still produces unusual heat, or the phone heats while charging when it is otherwise idle, stop charging and seek support. Do not continue swapping accessories indefinitely, and do not regard a new cable as a fix for swelling, odor, leakage or other battery symptoms.

Battery warning signs require a different response
Stop using and charging the phone if you notice a case or screen lifting from swelling, liquid leakage, an unusual chemical odor, hissing or other odd sounds, discoloration, physical damage or extreme heat. Do not press on a bulge, puncture the battery, bend the phone back into shape or attempt a home repair. Keep the device away from flammable materials and contact the manufacturer, an authorized repair provider or your local hazardous-waste authority for handling instructions when there is no immediate fire threat.
A damaged lithium-ion battery can remain hazardous even after it appears to cool. Do not place the phone or a loose lithium-ion battery in household trash or a regular recycling bin. Local rules differ, and damaged batteries may require special collection or transport procedures; follow the instructions from the manufacturer and your local waste authority.

If the phone smokes or catches fire
Smoke or flames change this from a device problem into an emergency. Do not pick up, carry, cover, puncture or pour water on a smoking or burning phone. Warn others, leave the area, get outside and call your local emergency number. In the United States, call 911. Seattle Fire advises closing the door while leaving if that can be done without delaying escape. Tell responders that a lithium-ion battery device is involved.

When professional help is appropriate
Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider
Arrange service when the phone repeatedly overheats under ordinary use, remains too hot after you have stopped the workload and moved it to a cool setting, has physical damage, or shows any battery warning sign. Samsung specifically advises contacting support if the device remains too warm to touch. Have the model, software version, recent charging conditions and any warning message available; those details help support distinguish an environmental episode from a hardware fault.
Call emergency services
Call immediately for smoke, flames or an imminent fire threat. The 911 direction is specific to the United States; elsewhere use the local emergency number. Do not delay a call to search for a repair shop or recycling location.
How temperature guidance differs by phone
Manufacturers publish different limits and warnings, so apply the guidance for your exact model.

| Apple: 0–35°C ambient temperature for iPhone and iPad use | The specified surrounding-air range in Apple’s current support guidance, accessed October 13, 2026. | It is not a universal internal battery-danger threshold for every phone. |
| Google: avoid exposure above 45°C in the cited Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro Safety & Regulatory Guide | A safety warning specific to those models’ guidance. | It should not be applied as an all-phone cutoff or compared directly with Apple’s ambient-use range. |
| Manufacturer temperature warning or protective slowdown | The device has detected a condition requiring reduced use, cooling or charging interruption. | The absence of a warning does not guarantee that a physically damaged battery is safe. |
Apple states that if an iPhone or iPad does not display a temperature warning, it can continue to be used. That statement is Apple-specific; follow the instructions shown by your own phone and treat physical battery damage as a reason to stop regardless of the screen message.
Preventing repeat overheating
- Keep demanding work out of direct sun and hot cars, especially while charging.
- Give the phone an open, hard surface rather than bedding, a tightly packed bag or a sealed pocket during long tasks.
- Use charging equipment that the phone maker identifies as compatible with your model, and replace accessories showing damage.
- Install software updates under normal room-temperature conditions and avoid stacking an update, gaming session and high-resolution recording while the phone is already hot.
- Pay attention to patterns: heat only during one app, only while charging, or even when idle points to different troubleshooting paths.
There is no official published overheating incidence rate that can be used to predict your individual risk. The practical decision is based on the device’s behavior, the environment and physical battery condition.
A simple decision rule
If the phone is merely warm during a demanding task and cools when that task stops, reduce the workload and improve ventilation. If it warns, slows, dims, pauses charging or shuts down, stop and let it cool according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If it is hot at rest, repeatedly overheats, or has any battery-damage sign, stop using and charging it and obtain professional guidance. Smoke or fire requires evacuation and emergency services, not troubleshooting.
