Is Path of Exile 2 Free to Play? Early Access Costs, Stash Tabs, Cosmetics, and More

Path of Exile 2 is not free to play during Early Access. You currently need an Early Access key, usually obtained through a supporter pack. Grinding Gear Games (GGG) says the planned full release will be free to play, and its staff has stated that people who buy Early Access will not have to purchase the game again. GGG has not confirmed a full-release date in the official sources available.

After you have access, spending on points, cosmetics, supporter packs, or stash tabs is optional. Those purchases can make inventory management or character customization more convenient, but they are not presented as requirements for entering the game or completing it.

Early Access and full release are different payment models

The most important distinction is timing. The current Early Access build is paid, while GGG’s stated plan for the eventual full release is free to play.

Access state How access works What you should expect to pay
Early Access Buy an Early Access key, commonly included in a supporter pack listed on GGG’s purchase page. A one-time purchase shown on the live store; prices and bundle contents can change.
Planned full release GGG says the game will be free to play. No separate game purchase is planned. GGG staff says existing Early Access buyers will not need to buy it again.

In a January 25, 2025 clarification, GGG staff member Vash_GGG wrote: “Please note that Path of Exile 2 will be Free to Play on release, and you will not need to buy this again.” Read the statement in context on the official supporter-pack clarification. It is a monetization commitment, not a release-date announcement.

Do you have to buy Early Access?

Yes, if you want to play during the paid Early Access period, you need an Early Access entitlement. The entitlement is generally sold as part of a digital supporter pack rather than as an isolated, permanent subscription. GGG’s purchase page shows the key inside the pack’s contents, so check the current listing before paying: Path of Exile purchase page.

GGG also ran a temporary free weekend in 2025. The announcement explained that the event was limited and that players who wanted to continue afterward could buy an Early Access key or wait for the full release. A temporary free event should not be confused with the planned free-to-play launch model; see the official free-weekend announcement.

How to obtain access

  1. Open GGG’s official purchase page and review the currently listed Early Access supporter packs.
  2. Check that the selected pack explicitly includes a Path of Exile 2 Early Access key.
  3. Review the account and platform requirements before completing the transaction. Some entitlements are platform-specific.
  4. Redeem or activate the key on the account you intend to use for Path of Exile 2.
  5. Install the game through the supported platform associated with that entitlement and sign in to the same account.

Because packs, prices and platform policies can change, the live purchase page—not an old screenshot or a third-party listing—is the authoritative place to verify what a pack includes.

What the listed supporter packs can contain

A supporter pack is more than an admission ticket. Depending on the tier, it may combine the Early Access key with points, cosmetic items, soundtrack access or other digital rewards. Higher tiers can include selected physical merchandise or an art book, but those are optional pack rewards and may involve shipping and customs charges.

The official store page accessed on October 13, 2026 showed these examples:

Store listing (snapshot) Price shown Included items stated on the page What the purchase does
Path of Exile 2 Early Access Supporter Pack $30 USD Early Access key and 300 points Provides paid Early Access plus points for optional shop purchases.
First Blood Pack $20 USD 200 points and an extra stash tab Provides the listed digital rewards; verify that the current listing still includes an Early Access entitlement if access is your goal.

These are a dated store snapshot, not guaranteed evergreen prices. Currency, regional pricing, pack names, contents and availability can change. Always open the live GGG store immediately before purchase.

What costs extra after you have access?

Points

Points are the store currency used for optional digital purchases. A pack can grant points as part of its bundle, or you may be able to buy points separately through the official shop. Points do not represent a second access fee: the key gets you into Early Access, while points are spent on shop items.

Cosmetics

Cosmetics change appearance rather than granting a stated requirement for playing. Examples can include visual effects, armour appearances, pets or other customization items, depending on what the Path of Exile 2 shop offers at the time. GGG’s Early Access FAQ says, “Yes, the cosmetics shop will be available in Early Access with a selection of microtransactions from Path of Exile 1.” The available selection is not necessarily the complete Path of Exile 1 catalogue, and the selection can expand over time. Consult the Early Access FAQ and the in-game shop for the item you actually want.

Stash tabs

Stash tabs add organized storage to your account. They are convenience purchases: the official purchase information lists an extra stash tab in a pack, but it does not state that a particular tab is required to finish the campaign or access endgame. You can begin playing without buying an extra tab and decide later whether additional storage is worth the cost for your play style.

Players who trade, keep many crafting materials, or maintain several characters may value specialized storage more than someone who plays casually and regularly sells or discards items. That is a personal inventory-management choice, not an entry requirement.

Are Path of Exile 1 purchases usable in Path of Exile 2?

GGG describes carry-over as conditional, not universal. Its FAQ states: “Stash tab purchases made in Path of Exile 1 will be available in Path of Exile 2, where relevant.” The phrase “where relevant” matters. A tab built around a league mechanic or item type that does not exist in Path of Exile 2 may not have an equivalent function there.

The same FAQ says that a selection of Path of Exile 1 microtransactions would be available in the Path of Exile 2 cosmetics shop and that more would be added later. Therefore, a cosmetic you own in Path of Exile 1 is not automatically proof that it is usable in Path of Exile 2 today.

Check these conditions before relying on an old purchase

  • Item compatibility: Confirm that the stash tab or cosmetic has a Path of Exile 2 version or is listed as supported.
  • Game content: League-specific functionality may not carry over when the related mechanic is absent.
  • Platform: Some purchases or entitlements can be tied to the platform on which they were bought.
  • Current catalogue: The Path of Exile 2 shop is being populated over time, so availability can change.

Before buying a duplicate or assuming a transfer, sign in to the target account and inspect the Path of Exile 2 in-game store. The FAQ’s wording supports checking the actual item rather than treating all historical purchases as interchangeable.

Game access versus shop spending

Keeping these two decisions separate prevents most confusion:

  1. Access decision: Do you want to play before full release? If yes, you need the Early Access key included in an eligible purchase.
  2. Shop decision: Once inside, do you want optional storage or appearance items? You can spend points on those only if and when they provide value to you.

A supporter pack can combine both decisions in one checkout, but the points, stash tab and cosmetics are additions to the key—not hidden conditions for keeping access. The planned free-to-play launch also does not turn an Early Access purchase into a subscription.

Practical budgets for different players

“I only want to try the game early”

Choose the least expensive current option that clearly includes an Early Access key. Do not pay extra for physical rewards or a large cosmetics bundle unless you actually want those items. Verify the entitlement wording and your platform first.

“I want storage for a long-term character roster”

Start with the included storage in the game. Add a tab only after you know how much you keep and whether your account benefits from specialized organization. A pack that includes an extra tab may be useful, but the tab remains a convenience rather than a progression gate.

“I care about character appearance”

Compare the cosmetic preview and the supported game in the in-game shop before spending points. A Path of Exile 1 cosmetic may not yet be available in Path of Exile 2, even when GGG intends to make more of the catalogue available.

“I already bought Path of Exile 1 tabs or cosmetics”

Do not buy replacements automatically. Check the same account, target platform and current Path of Exile 2 availability. Tabs transfer where relevant, while cosmetics are being made available in stages.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling Early Access free: Paid Early Access and the planned free-to-play full release are separate states.
  • Treating a free weekend as the launch model: The 2025 event was temporary.
  • Assuming every supporter pack has identical contents: Keys, points, cosmetics and physical rewards vary by tier.
  • Assuming a pack price is permanent: The $20 and $30 figures above came from a dated store snapshot.
  • Assuming all Path of Exile 1 purchases transfer immediately: GGG uses “where relevant” for stash tabs and describes cosmetic availability as a selection that would grow.
  • Buying on the wrong platform or account: Platform-specific ownership can affect whether an entitlement appears where you expect.
  • Thinking stash tabs are mandatory: They are optional storage upgrades, not a stated requirement for campaign or endgame access.

What is still unknown

The official statements establish the intended payment model but do not provide a confirmed full-release date. They also cannot guarantee that today’s pack prices, shop catalogue or cross-platform rules will remain unchanged. For a purchase decision, use the current GGG purchase page, read the platform-specific terms, and inspect the Path of Exile 2 in-game store for cosmetic compatibility.

That leaves a clear answer for each major cost question: Early Access requires a paid key; the eventual release is planned as free to play; stash tabs and cosmetics are optional; and older Path of Exile 1 purchases require an item-by-item and platform-aware compatibility check.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
