Owncast can technically deliver a radio-style live stream, but it does not make YouTube Music a permitted source for rebroadcast. Owncast is a self-hosted server that accepts an RTMP broadcast from encoder software. You supply the server, configure the encoder, and remain responsible for the music rights, hosting, network, and uptime. A YouTube Music subscription should not be treated as broadcast permission.
What Owncast can—and cannot—do
Owncast is a self-hosted live-streaming server. An encoder such as OBS sends it an RTMP broadcast, and Owncast serves that stream to viewers. Its documentation recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for broad compatibility. An audio-led show can use a simple visual alongside the audio; Owncast is still receiving an encoded live broadcast, not acting as a music source. That technical capability is separate from permission to rebroadcast a particular recording. Owncast provides streaming software, not music licenses. YouTube’s Terms of Service specifically give publicly streaming music from the service as an example of use outside personal, non-commercial listening. Its paid-service terms also describe access as personal and non-commercial and restrict public presentations, subject to the terms’ stated copyright exception. Can you use YouTube Music as the radio feed?
Do not assume that playing a YouTube Music track and capturing its audio for an Owncast broadcast is allowed. YouTube’s Terms state: “use the Service to view or listen to Content other than for personal, non-commercial use (for example, you may not publicly screen videos or stream music from the Service)”. The terms provide a general restriction; whether a particular use is covered by separate permission or a legal exception depends on the circumstances and applicable law. The paid-service terms do not turn a subscription into a public-broadcast license.

For a public radio stream, use original music or obtain permissions that cover the intended public transmission and territories. The rights needed can depend on the recordings, compositions, jurisdiction, audience, and type of transmission. Check those rights before going live; Owncast setup does not settle them.
What you need before installing
- A supported host: a computer or server you administer, with enough network capacity and resources for the stream and expected audience. Owncast’s documentation does not establish a universal hardware specification or audience capacity.
- Encoder software: an RTMP-capable broadcaster such as OBS, configured to send the program to your Owncast server.
- Reachable ports: for a manual installation, Owncast documents web port 8080 and RTMP ingest port 1935 as defaults. Host and cloud firewalls must allow the appropriate traffic. If you change the defaults, configure the encoder and network for the ports you chose. See the Owncast manual installation guide.
- ffmpeg: required by the documented manual installation.
- Music rights: permission for the public transmission you plan to make. A YouTube Music subscription is not a substitute.
Owncast lists Raspberry Pi arm64 and arm7 builds as covered; ARMv6 is unsupported. That compatibility note is not a performance guarantee for a particular device, bitrate, or listener count.

Set up Owncast for an audio-led stream
- Install Owncast on your host. Follow the manual installation steps for your environment and install ffmpeg. Make the web interface and RTMP ingest reachable through your host firewall and, if applicable, cloud firewall. The documented defaults are 8080 for the web interface and 1935 for RTMP.
- Secure the first-run installation. Change the documented default administrator password and stream key immediately after first login. Treat the stream key as a secret: anyone who has it may be able to publish to your server. Do not reuse example credentials from setup documentation.
- Set the encoder destination. In OBS or another RTMP encoder, enter your Owncast server as the destination, use the
/livepath, and enter the stream key from your Owncast configuration. Encoder labels differ by application; use its custom RTMP or server settings rather than assuming every app has identical fields. Owncast documents the broadcast configuration in its broadcasting guide. - Choose compatible audio and video settings. Use AAC audio. If your stream includes video, use H.264 for the documented broad compatibility. Owncast lists 96, 128, 192, 256, and 320 kbps as example audio bitrate levels and notes that music-focused streams may warrant a higher choice. These are examples, not required values or a guarantee of perceived quality. Choose a bitrate that suits the source and that your host’s upload connection can sustain.
- Start with a rights-cleared test program. Start the encoder and check that Owncast receives the stream and that a viewer can play it. Test the actual configuration for stability and playback before relying on it. Owncast’s documentation describes compatibility and resource considerations; it does not guarantee performance on your specific host or network.
Ongoing responsibilities and limitations
- Server and network upkeep: with self-hosting, you operate the host, keep the relevant ports reachable, and provide enough sustained upload capacity. Interruptions can come from the host, network, encoder, or configuration.
- Stream security: protect the administrator login and stream key, and rotate credentials if they are exposed.
- Audience playback: test from the type of connection and device your listeners are likely to use; a stream that starts successfully at the encoder can still have playback or network problems for viewers.
- Music rights: technical success does not establish permission. Keep documentation for any license or permission relevant to your transmission.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
