Yes—if you enjoy large, demanding logic games and are comfortable learning rules by experimentation. Order of the Sinking Star is a single-player puzzle adventure from Thekla, Inc., directed by Jonathan Blow. It combines four different puzzle traditions across a nonlinear world, eventually making their rules interact. That ambition is its main attraction and its main warning: the game offers exceptional breadth, but it expects patience, inference, and a willingness to leave a problem and return later.
What is Order of the Sinking Star?
Order of the Sinking Star is a story-bearing puzzle adventure set in a magical realm. The Steam description presents four worlds, each with its own playable heroes, hazards, secrets, and evolving mechanics. The game released on October 8, 2026, with PC/Steam and Steam Deck, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 listed as launch platforms.

This is not an action game with occasional puzzles. Movement, positioning, observation, and rule discovery are the central activities. Story clues are distributed through exploration, so progress comes from understanding both the world and the systems that govern it. The official description advertises more than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles, while an official 2026 news post describes “hundreds of hours” of unique gameplay. Those are developer and publisher descriptions, not independently measured totals, but they accurately signal the intended scale.
The design began with four separate puzzle-game foundations. As the worlds meet, the game combines their rules instead of keeping them in isolated chapters. Jonathan Blow explained the goal in a MonsterVine interview on May 14, 2026: “I knew from the beginning that the core idea of the game was combining these worlds. So, I was on the lookout for mechanics that I felt would come together and dovetail nicely to create new, interesting situations.”

How the four puzzle systems work
Each foundation teaches a recognizable rule set before the game asks you to reason across systems. The table below summarizes the roles described in the official game material.
| Foundation | Central interaction | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes | Throw stones to lay stepping paths | Planning routes and manipulating access across spaces |
| Mirror Isles | Swap places with reflections | Position changes, spatial relationships, and timing |
| Promesst 1–3 | Grid puzzles built around beams of light | Line-of-sight reasoning and arrangement of components |
| Heroes of Sokoban 1–3 | Character-specific movement and pushing rules | Different abilities and constraints for each hero |
The important point is not simply that there are four mini-games. Their systems are intended to interlock. A route-planning rule can become a positioning problem; a reflection swap can change how a beam puzzle is solved; a character’s pushing restriction can turn an otherwise familiar room into a new logic problem. Blow later described the objective to PC Gamer as bringing these elements together and exploring “this large possibility space that results.”
How progression and exploration work
The overworld is deliberately nonlinear. The official September 23, 2026 news post describes a central hub with four paths branching into regions and no single “right way” to proceed. You can choose among routes, roam at your own pace, leave a puzzle unfinished, and return after learning a useful rule elsewhere.

What nonlinear means in practice
- You are not required to clear every puzzle in the order you encounter it.
- A difficult room can be left behind without ending your run; another region may provide a new idea or ability first.
- Exploration itself is part of progression because secrets and story clues are distributed through the world.
- Completion does not require visiting every corner of the overworld, according to PC Gamer’s report on Blow’s comments.
This structure suits players who like setting their own short-term goals. It is less comfortable if you prefer a tightly guided campaign that always identifies the next correct objective. The freedom is meaningful rather than cosmetic: optional challenges and alternate routes account for much of the game’s unusual size.
How difficult is Order of the Sinking Star?
Expect a brain-intensive game that rewards curiosity and persistence. The official store description says puzzles build on one another, while launch coverage praised the design with terms such as “cunning” and “merciless.” Those are attributed critical reactions, not an objective numerical difficulty scale, but they point to the same practical expectation: many players will get stuck, and the intended solution is usually to understand the rule more deeply rather than to execute a faster sequence of inputs.
Why the difficulty rises
- Rules accumulate. Early rooms establish individual systems; later rooms ask you to coordinate several of them.
- Character constraints matter. In the Heroes of Sokoban foundation, different heroes have distinct movement and pushing rules, so a familiar layout can behave differently depending on whom you control.
- Optional content is substantial. The hardest challenges are not necessarily required for basic progression, but finding them can raise the overall challenge sharply.
- Hints are not the core loop. The available descriptions emphasize curiosity and persistence, not a conventional hint ladder or adjustable difficulty setting.
No reviewed source establishes selectable difficulty modes, an assist setting, or a guaranteed hint system. Do not buy the game assuming you can switch to an easier preset. If you need frequent nudges or a low-friction story, this is a tentative recommendation rather than an automatic one.

How to approach a puzzle when you are stuck
- Record the rule, not just the goal. Write down what each object, hero, reflection, beam, or stone is allowed to do.
- Separate impossibility from inconvenience. If a route seems blocked, test whether the obstruction is permanent or whether another character, reflection, or light arrangement changes it.
- Look for the smallest reversible move. Use a low-cost experiment to learn what the room permits before committing to a long sequence.
- Leave deliberately. Because the world is nonlinear, moving to another region is a designed strategy, not a failure state.
- Return with a hypothesis. Re-enter the room only after identifying which rule or interaction you had misunderstood.
How long is the game?
There is no independently established average completion time. The figures available are unusually large but need careful qualification:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Figure | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| More than 1,000 handcrafted puzzles | The advertised puzzle count | Developer/publisher description on the official Steam listing and official game news in 2026 |
| “Hundreds of hours” of unique gameplay | Promotional description of the game’s overall scale | Wording from Thekla, Inc.’s official 2026 news post; not a measured average |
| Around 500 hours | Jonathan Blow’s estimate for a typical player completing everything | Reported by PC Gamer in 2025; Blow said it was “not a promise of any kind” |
For a normal playthrough, the honest answer is that your time will depend on how many optional puzzles you pursue, how quickly the rules click, and whether you consult outside help. The 500-hour figure should not be read as a required campaign length or as the average time every player will spend. It is a qualified completionist estimate. You can finish the game without exploring every part of the overworld, so the main path will be substantially shorter than an all-content run for many players.
Is Order of the Sinking Star replayable?
Yes, in the sense that its nonlinear design gives you optional challenges, alternate routes, and reasons to revisit areas. You can skip a puzzle, continue elsewhere, and return later; a completionist run can uncover far more than a first pass through the critical path.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That is different from promising a conventional replay mode. The available information does not establish New Game Plus, randomized rooms, procedural generation, or materially different second-playthrough rules. The strongest supported case for replayability is breadth and revisitation, not a separate repeat-run system.
Who gets the most replay value?
- Explorers: You can pursue branches and secrets at your own pace rather than following one mandatory route.
- Completionists: The advertised puzzle count and optional regions provide a very long checklist of challenges.
- System-focused players: Replaying a room after understanding how two mechanics interact can reveal solutions you missed initially.
If you want a story game that changes substantially on a second campaign, wait for confirmed information about replay-specific modes rather than assuming the nonlinear map provides that by itself.

What critics have said
Launch-period coverage was strongly positive but not uniform in wording. The publisher’s official roundup reproduced Shacknews’ “Order of the Sinking Star is a masterpiece” (10/10), GameSpot’s description of “impressive, cunning, and devious puzzle design” (8/10), and GamingTrend’s “Meticulous, mysterious and merciless mechanics, masterfully made” (9/10). These are the original outlets’ opinions, quoted by the publisher; they are useful signals about reception, not objective measurements of difficulty or quality.
Verdict: is it worth playing?
Order of the Sinking Star is worth playing if the prospect of learning four puzzle languages and then seeing them collide sounds exciting. Its strongest qualities are the scale of its handcrafted content, the freedom to choose routes, and the way its systems are designed to create new situations when combined. Its clearest costs are time and cognitive effort: the game can be demanding, and the largest completion estimates are measured in hundreds of hours.
