How difficult is it?
The overall difficulty is genuinely challenging
Steam includes the user-defined “Difficult” tag. A Nintendo Life review of the European Nintendo Switch 2 version, published October 7, 2026, described the game as “not for the weak-willed” and said that some essential puzzles were headache-inducing. Those are qualitative observations rather than a numerical difficulty score, but they establish an important expectation: the story path is not designed to be friction-free.
The challenge comes from having to understand systems, notice relationships and apply rules in unfamiliar contexts. Because puzzles build on earlier discoveries, a solution often depends on remembering how a mechanic behaves rather than spotting a single obvious object. The game expects you to test ideas, accept dead ends and return with a different interpretation.
Not every puzzle is equally hard
More than 1,000 puzzles does not mean more than 1,000 mandatory obstacles of identical difficulty. The worlds contain optional challenges and secrets alongside the puzzles needed to advance. Some tasks may act as an introduction to a rule, while later combinations can demand substantially more reasoning. The available evidence supports calling the game difficult overall, not claiming that every puzzle is extreme.

Nintendo Life reports that you do not need all 1,000 puzzles to obtain the full story. That makes the game more approachable for players who want the narrative journey without solving every secret. It does not make the campaign easy: the same review specifically found some essential puzzles difficult. You can skip a large amount of optional content, but you should still expect to get stuck occasionally on the route to the ending.

How long does it take to beat?
There is no dependable average time to credits
The available sources establish the game’s scale but do not establish a reliable typical completion time. “Hundreds of hours” is promotional scope language from the Steam description, not an average measured across players. Since the game allows you to leave areas, revisit challenges and choose how many optional puzzles to pursue, a single campaign-length number would be misleading.
The 500-hour figure is a completionist estimate
In a December 12, 2025 PC Gamer report, director Jonathan Blow said: “This is not a promise of any kind, but we estimate that, for a typical player, if they were to be a completionist, it might be around 500 hours of gameplay.” The wording matters. It is an attributed estimate for someone attempting completion, explicitly qualified as not a promise. It is not a measured average, a required campaign length or a guarantee that a typical player will spend 500 hours.
The same report says you do not have to complete every area before reaching the endgame. A player focused on the narrative can therefore finish without clearing the entire puzzle set, while a completionist may continue for hundreds of hours after seeing the main story. No published source gives a trustworthy ordinary time-to-credits range, so be wary of guides or listings that present 500 hours as the standard campaign.
Think in terms of play style, not a fixed timer
- Story-focused play: pursue the required objectives and accept that some optional puzzles will remain unsolved. The sources do not provide a standard hour count for this approach.
- Exploration-focused play: revisit worlds, investigate clues and solve additional challenges as new mechanics become available. Your total time will rise with the number of areas and puzzles you choose to pursue.
- Completionist play: attempt the full puzzle set and secrets. Blow’s qualified estimate is around 500 hours for this goal, not a promise.
What should you expect while playing?
Open-ended exploration
The structure is closer to a large puzzle world than to a linear sequence of levels. You may discover a challenge before you understand the rule needed to solve it, then return later after learning more elsewhere. This backtracking is part of the intended rhythm, not evidence that you have taken a wrong path.

Rules that combine over time
Each puzzle builds on earlier ones, and mechanics evolve as worlds and characters meet. Early solutions therefore function as lessons for later problems. Pay attention to what a world teaches you, because the game is designed around reusing and combining ideas rather than discarding them after one room.
Story delivered through discovery
Steam describes story clues found through gameplay and notes. Expect narrative information to be distributed through exploration rather than delivered only in long cinematic sequences. If you prefer to move quickly from one plot scene to the next, the game’s investigative format may feel slow; if you enjoy assembling context from discoveries, it is likely to be rewarding.
