Is Obsidian Sync Worth Paying For? Costs, Security, and Alternatives

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Obsidian Sync is worth paying for if you want automatic, supported synchronization across Windows, macOS, iPhone, iPad, Android, or other mixed devices, together with end-to-end encryption and built-in recovery. It is less compelling for an Apple-only setup that already works reliably with iCloud, or for a technically confident user willing to maintain Syncthing or Git.

The practical choice is not simply “subscription versus free.” You are choosing between convenience, privacy, recovery tools, platform coverage, and the amount of maintenance you will perform yourself. The sections below show what each option actually provides and which trade-offs matter for your vault.

What Obsidian Sync includes

Obsidian Sync is a hosted synchronization service for Obsidian vaults. It keeps selected vaults available on supported desktop and mobile apps, synchronizes changes made offline, and provides controls for encryption, history, selective synchronization, and recovery. Obsidian lists cross-platform apps, offline work with later merging, configuration syncing, activity logs, shared vaults, selective sync, file recovery, and version history among the service’s features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The paid plans differ mainly in the number of vaults, storage capacity, maximum file size, and length of version history. The prices and limits below are those listed on Obsidian’s 2025 product page; subscription pricing and allowances can change, so verify the current figures before purchasing.

Sync plan limits and prices

Plan Annual-billing price Monthly-billing price Synced vaults Total storage Maximum file size Version history
Sync Standard $4 per user per month, billed annually $5 per user per month 1 1 GB 5 MB 1 month
Sync Plus $8 per user per month, billed annually $10 per user per month 10 10 GB 200 MB 12 months

Sync Plus also has an upgrade path to 100 GB. Obsidian advertises a seven-day refund window on the product page. The Standard plan is usually sufficient for one text-focused vault with modest attachments; Plus becomes relevant when you maintain several vaults, keep larger PDFs or media files, or need a longer recovery window.

Why people pay for Sync

Automatic operation across mixed devices

The largest benefit is removing the need to administer a separate file-synchronization system. A vault can be edited on a computer, phone, or tablet while offline and synchronized when the device reconnects. This is particularly useful when your daily devices use different operating systems. You do not need to keep a particular computer online or remember to run a manual commit before changing devices.

Selective sync lets you control which parts of a vault are downloaded to a device. That matters when a phone has limited storage or when a vault contains large attachments that are unnecessary on mobile. Configuration syncing can carry Obsidian settings between devices, while activity logs provide an account-level view of synchronization events.

End-to-end encryption for private notes

Obsidian documents end-to-end encryption (E2EE) using AES-256, scrypt key derivation, and GCM. With E2EE enabled, the encryption password remains under your control. Obsidian states: “This guarantees that no one — not even the Obsidian team — can access your notes.”

That privacy model has an important recovery consequence: the E2EE password is not recoverable. If you lose it, you cannot add another device to the encrypted remote vault. Store the password in a secure password manager or another durable offline record before enabling E2EE. Standard encryption is weaker because Obsidian holds the key and can use it to decrypt data stored remotely.

E2EE is most valuable for journals, health information, financial records, client material, unpublished work, or any notes whose confidentiality matters more than easy account recovery. If you choose standard encryption for convenience, understand that the provider-managed key changes the trust model.

Built-in recovery instead of a separate backup workflow

Sync includes version history and file recovery. If a note is overwritten or deleted, you can use the service’s retained versions to recover an earlier state, subject to your plan’s history period: one month on Standard or 12 months on Plus. This is not the same as an unlimited backup, but it is a practical safety net for ordinary editing mistakes.

Recovery is a meaningful part of the subscription’s value because free folder-sync methods generally do not provide a unified, plan-level restore interface. Git can preserve a much longer history, but only if you commit changes consistently. Syncthing mirrors files and does not replace a separate backup strategy.

When Obsidian Sync is worth the price

You use Windows and an iPhone or iPad

A mixed Windows-and-Apple setup is one of the clearest cases for paying. Obsidian’s documented iCloud workflow is intended for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, while its documentation warns that iCloud Drive on Windows can cause file duplication or corruption. Sync avoids making iCloud the bridge between those operating systems and gives you one supported service for the vault.

This is especially valuable if the vault is important for work or study and you move between devices several times a day. The subscription cost buys a background process you do not have to supervise, plus history if a merge goes wrong.

You want privacy without operating infrastructure

Self-managed synchronization can keep data under tighter control, but it requires devices, configuration, updates, and troubleshooting. E2EE in Sync gives you a provider-hosted service while keeping note contents inaccessible to the provider according to Obsidian’s documentation. The trade-off is that you must protect the encryption password yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need predictable recovery

Writers, students, researchers, and professionals who cannot easily recreate lost notes benefit from retained versions and deleted-file recovery. Standard’s one-month history covers many accidental edits; Plus’s 12-month history is better when you may discover a problem long after it happened or when a vault changes frequently.

You share a vault

Obsidian lists shared vaults as a Sync capability. If several people need access to the same notes, a supported service with account controls is generally easier to manage than asking every participant to maintain a peer-to-peer network or Git workflow.

When an alternative makes more sense

iCloud Drive for Apple-only users

For a vault used only on macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, iCloud is the simplest alternative if it already fits your Apple storage and backup habits. Obsidian recommends iCloud for those platforms. Keep the vault downloaded locally so cloud optimization does not make files unavailable while you are working.

  • READ IN COMFORT, DAY OR NIGHT – Unlike most laptops and phones, reMarkable Paper Pro has a low-glare display that reflects natural light, so you can read without eye-strain, even outside. An adjustable reading light means you can keep working when the lights go out, too.

The limitation is platform scope and reliability outside Apple’s ecosystem. Obsidian warns that using iCloud Drive on Windows may result in file duplication or corruption. If even one essential device is Windows, test carefully before making iCloud your only synchronization method. Do not run iCloud and Obsidian Sync on the same vault at the same time.

OneDrive when it is already part of your cloud plan

OneDrive is documented as a Windows and macOS option. Its Android functionality is limited, and Obsidian does not provide official iOS vault support through this method. Mark files as available offline so the cloud service does not offload the local copies that Obsidian needs to open and update.

OneDrive can be economical when you already pay for a broader cloud-storage plan and use Windows or macOS as your primary devices. It is a poor fit if official iPhone vault access is a requirement or if you want built-in Obsidian version history rather than the file-history features of a separate storage service.

Google Drive when Android and desktop access are the priority

Obsidian documents Google Drive for Windows, macOS, and Android, with limited iOS support. On iOS, Obsidian recommends using a third-party solution rather than relying on the basic Google Drive workflow. As with OneDrive, mark the vault files available offline to prevent cloud offloading from interrupting edits.

Google Drive is reasonable for a desktop-and-Android combination when you already have storage there. It is less suitable as a single solution for a Windows-and-iPhone workflow, where the documented iOS limitations make the setup more complicated than Sync.

Syncthing for control and no subscription

Syncthing synchronizes directly between your devices over a local network or the internet rather than placing the vault in a central hosted account. That decentralized design appeals to users who want control over where data travels and are comfortable administering their own devices.

Syncthing works best when at least one device is always available to relay changes. If every device is frequently offline, synchronization may be delayed until a peer comes online. Obsidian notes that the official Android app is no longer maintained and points users toward the community Syncthing-Fork instead. That maintenance status is an important consideration for Android users who want a supported, low-friction setup.

  • 【Audio Recording】 Records audio simultaneously while you write, allowing you to sync your notes with the corresponding audio for context. and Clicking on the notes allows you to locate and play back the corresponding audio content.

Syncthing does not automatically give you Obsidian’s account-level activity logs, selective-sync controls, or plan-based version history. Add an independent backup routine if the vault is irreplaceable. You also remain responsible for permissions, network connectivity, conflict handling, and keeping the participating devices healthy.

Git and Working Copy for maximum history

Git records changes in a repository that can be hosted on GitHub, GitLab, or your own server. It can provide a detailed, long-lived history and lets you inspect or revert changes precisely. Obsidian describes the workflow as manual: you commit, push, and pull.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That manual step is both the strength and weakness of Git. Commits create deliberate checkpoints and make it possible to review exactly what changed, but forgetting to commit or pull before switching devices can leave the repository behind. Merge conflicts also require you to understand which version should win.

Working Copy supplies an iOS Git client; some features require a paid in-app purchase. A Git setup is best for technical users who already understand repositories and want transparent history more than background convenience. It is not the easiest first choice for someone who simply wants notes to appear on a phone.

Can you sync Obsidian for free?

Yes, but “free” usually means using storage or software you already have and accepting additional work or limitations. iCloud, OneDrive, and Google Drive can be economical when they match your device mix. Syncthing avoids a Sync subscription but requires device administration and a suitable peer-online pattern. Git avoids the Sync fee while demanding manual repository operations.

Compare the total cost, not only the monthly price. A free method can consume time when you troubleshoot conflicts, maintain an always-available device, purchase a mobile Git client feature, or reconstruct a deleted file without retained snapshots. Conversely, paying for Sync may be unnecessary if your Apple-only workflow is stable and you already have a separate backup plan.

Safe setup rules that apply to every method

Use exactly one synchronization service per vault

Obsidian explicitly warns: “Avoid syncing the same vault across multiple services (e.g., using both Obsidian Sync and iCloud simultaneously) to prevent data conflicts or corruption.” Do not place one vault under Sync while also syncing its folder through iCloud, OneDrive, Google Drive, Syncthing, or another service.

Keep a local copy available

Cloud optimization can make files online-only. Ensure the vault is downloaded locally on each device that edits it. This is specifically important for iCloud, OneDrive, and Google Drive workflows.

Protect credentials and encryption material

If you enable E2EE, record the encryption password in a secure location before adding devices. The password cannot be recovered by Obsidian. For Git or Syncthing, protect repository credentials, device keys, and the machines that hold the local vault.

Separate synchronization from backup

Synchronization mirrors changes; it does not guarantee an independent backup. Sync’s retained history helps recover recent mistakes, but the retention period is limited by plan. Maintain another backup copy for long-term protection, especially when using a mirror-based method such as Syncthing or a cloud folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test with a disposable vault first

Before moving a large or irreplaceable vault, create a small test vault containing representative notes and attachments. Check that each target device can open, edit, and receive changes, and verify how your chosen method behaves when a device is offline. This catches platform-specific limitations before they affect your primary notes.

Is Obsidian Sync worth paying for?

For most people with a mixed device fleet, the answer is yes. Sync Standard costs $4 per user per month when billed annually or $5 monthly, and it combines cross-platform operation, E2EE, selective synchronization, configuration syncing, activity logs, and one month of history. Sync Plus costs $8 annually billed monthly or $10 monthly and raises the limits to 10 vaults, 10 GB of storage, 200 MB files, and 12 months of history, with a path to 100 GB.

Choose iCloud when every editing device is Apple hardware and the simpler existing workflow is reliable. Choose Syncthing when avoiding a hosted subscription and controlling the network path matter more than convenience. Choose Git when explicit, long-term commit history justifies manual operations. Choose OneDrive or Google Drive when their documented platform limitations do not affect your devices and the storage is already part of a plan you use.

The deciding question is how much maintenance and recovery responsibility you want to own. Sync is paying for supported automation and a defined recovery layer; the alternatives trade that convenience for lower incremental cost, greater control, or stronger manual history.
