That is a reported market snapshot, not confirmation that the company crossed the milestone: an exact price, market value and measurement time were not independently verified. The business story behind the move is clearer. Nvidia reported surging revenue led by Data Center and issued a higher next-quarter revenue outlook, while investors also weighed a larger share-buyback authorization and the risks of sustaining the AI infrastructure boom.
Why Nvidia was nearing $6 trillion
Bloomberg’s October 6 report described Nvidia as back at a record and on the verge of becoming the first company to reach a $6 trillion market capitalization. It linked the move to investor rotation into AI chipmakers, a robust revenue outlook and the company’s expanded buyback authorization. Because the report’s precise share price, market-cap calculation and market-session timing could not be independently confirmed, the $6 trillion figure should be read as a near-milestone description in that report—not as an exact current valuation or a milestone Nvidia had definitively passed. Market capitalization is the share price multiplied by the number of shares outstanding. It is a market valuation, not Nvidia’s revenue, cash balance or the amount investors have put into the company in a single transaction. A record share price and a near-$6 trillion market value describe related but distinct measures.

For its second quarter of fiscal 2027, ended July 26, 2026, Nvidia reported $96.221 billion in revenue, up 106% from a year earlier and 18% sequentially. Data Center, its largest reported revenue segment, generated $89.0 billion, also up 18% sequentially and 117% year over year. The figures are company-reported results, not a measure of future performance. Nvidia’s Q2 FY2027 results.

- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
Nvidia reported GAAP net income of $59.688 billion and GAAP diluted earnings per share of $2.46 for the quarter. These results help explain why investors focus on whether demand for AI computing is translating into sales and profits, rather than treating the market valuation alone as evidence of operating performance.
Guidance points to continued growth, with a stated China assumption
For Q3 FY2027, Nvidia forecast revenue of $108.0 billion, plus or minus 2%. The company said that outlook assumed no Data Center compute revenue from China. This is management guidance, not a guaranteed result; the China assumption is part of the forecast and should not be mistaken for a statement that all Nvidia revenue from China is zero.

How the buyback fits—and what it does not mean
In September 2026, Nvidia’s board authorized an additional $150 billion for share repurchases, bringing the stated buyback program to $235 billion, with execution expected through the fiscal year ending January 30, 2028, according to the Associated Press. An authorization permits repurchases; it does not mean the entire authorized amount has already been spent. Associated Press coverage of the authorization.

The timing and amounts of actual shareholder returns are different measures. Nvidia said it returned approximately $26.0 billion through repurchases and dividends during Q2 FY2027, and that approximately $99.0 billion remained under repurchase authorization at the quarter’s end on July 26. Those quarter-end figures predate the September expansion, so they should not be added to or substituted for the later $235 billion program total.

The company presented the authorization as a way to return capital while continuing to invest, and Bloomberg included the buyback among the factors in the market move. That context does not establish that repurchases alone caused the record. A buyback can reduce shares outstanding when executed, but it does not itself demonstrate that AI demand, earnings or the valuation will continue to rise.

AI spending must produce returns
The key question for Nvidia’s valuation is whether customers and the broader ecosystem can earn enough from AI to justify continued investment in computing infrastructure. The Associated Press noted skepticism about whether AI will ultimately justify the trillions being spent to develop it, alongside signs of strong adoption. Strong chip sales are evidence of present demand; they do not by themselves establish the long-term return on every customer’s AI investment.

Infrastructure and supply have to keep pace
Nvidia’s quarterly filing reported $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments as of July 26, 2026. That scale reflects commitments to support demand, but it also leaves execution exposed to the availability of land, power, facilities and capital, as well as the performance of customers and partners. Nvidia identifies these kinds of data-center deployment constraints in its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended July 26, 2026. Commitments are not the same as completed capacity or revenue.

The Q3 outlook’s assumption of no Data Center compute revenue from China makes the geographic qualification explicit. Changes in market access, customer demand or supply availability could affect actual results relative to guidance; the forecast should therefore be considered with its stated assumptions rather than read as a certainty.

How to read the $6 trillion headline
- Separate operating facts from market pricing: Nvidia’s reported revenue, earnings and guidance describe company performance; a market capitalization reflects what investors are currently willing to pay for its shares.
- Keep actual returns distinct from authorization: quarterly repurchases and dividends are completed shareholder returns; the $235 billion program is an authorization intended to be executed over time.
- Look beyond demand: the growth case also depends on supply, data-center infrastructure, customer and partner execution, geographic assumptions and whether AI investment earns adequate returns.
