Short answer: no—not if a flying activity is your reason for buying it. Nintendo’s current feature list for Nintendo Switch Sports names Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara. It does not list a flying sport or Pilotwings-style activity. That conclusion is an inference from Nintendo’s published lineup, rather than a separate Nintendo statement using the words “no flying mode.”
Buy it for motion-controlled sports, local multiplayer and optional online play instead. The game supports play in person or online, but online features require a Nintendo Account, internet access and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, with availability varying by country.

Does Nintendo Switch Sports have a flying mode?
Nintendo’s official game page lists eight sports:
Recommended Free Tools
| Sport | Included in Nintendo’s current lineup? | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Basketball | Yes | Nintendo marks it with a software-update note. |
| Golf | Yes | Nintendo marks it with a software-update note; the game received a free Golf update in 2022. |
| Soccer | Yes | Some Soccer play can use the Leg Strap. |
| Volleyball | Yes | Listed as one of the game’s sports. |
| Bowling | Yes | Listed as one of the game’s sports. |
| Tennis | Yes | Listed as one of the game’s sports. |
| Badminton | Yes | Listed as one of the game’s sports. |
| Chambara | Yes | Listed as one of the game’s sports. |
| Flying activity | Not listed | No flying mode appears in Nintendo’s published sports lineup. |
Because the official list contains no flying activity, a buyer looking specifically for flight simulation, aircraft control or a Pilotwings-like mode should not treat Nintendo Switch Sports as that game. Nintendo’s wording is a feature list, so it is more precise to say that flying is not listed than to claim Nintendo issued a separate “there is no flying mode” announcement.

Nintendo describes the product as a Nintendo Switch game and uses the phrase “Bring the thrill of your favorite sports to life!” on its official game page. That description fits the eight listed activities; it does not promise an aviation feature.
What you actually get in the sports collection
Basketball
Basketball is one of the two activities Nintendo identifies with a software-update note on the feature page. The available evidence establishes its inclusion, but not a separate flying or aerial-sports mode within it. Expect the purchase decision to center on motion-controlled basketball rather than on flight mechanics.
Golf
Golf is part of the current lineup. Nintendo announced the free Golf update on November 29, 2022. It added 21 holes from the Wii Sports series and an online Survival Golf format for up to eight players.

| Holes added | 21 holes | Nintendo, 2022; drawn from the Wii Sports series. |
| Online Survival Golf capacity | Up to eight players | Nintendo, 2022; online access requires the game’s stated membership and account requirements. |
Golf may appeal if you want a slower, timing-based sports option, but it is still golf—not a way to pilot or glide through a virtual world.
Soccer
Soccer is included, and Nintendo says the Leg Strap is required for some Soccer play. Nintendo Support also documents how to switch to Leg-Strap Mode. The accessory changes the input method for supported Soccer play; it does not unlock a flying mode.
Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara
These five activities complete the listed lineup. Together with Basketball, Golf and Soccer, they define the scope of the game Nintendo currently presents: a collection of physical sports controlled with Joy-Con input, not an open-ended catalogue of every motion-controlled activity.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Who should buy Nintendo Switch Sports?
The right decision depends on the activity you want, how you plan to play and whether online access matters.
Buy it if you want motion-controlled sports
- You want a single Nintendo Switch game containing eight named sports rather than a dedicated flight title.
- You expect to play in the same room with other people and value quick, movement-based matches.
- You are interested in the Golf update, including its 21 holes and online Survival Golf for up to eight players.
- You want Soccer with the option of Nintendo’s Leg Strap input for supported play.
Skip it for this purchase if flying is non-negotiable
- You are searching for aircraft controls, gliding, aerial exploration or a Pilotwings-style experience.
- You would be disappointed if “flying mode” turned out to be a mistaken description in a listing, video or discussion.
- You are buying only for aviation gameplay and have little interest in the eight listed sports.
For that narrow use case, the answer is straightforward: do not buy Nintendo Switch Sports expecting flying. The official lineup does not establish such a mode.
Consider your group before choosing
The game is designed for play in person or online. Local play avoids a subscription requirement and is the simpler choice for a household that wants to pass Joy-Con controllers around. Online play is useful when participants are in different places, but it adds account, internet and membership conditions.
How online play works
Nintendo specifies three prerequisites for online features:
- Nintendo Account: Players need an account associated with the online service.
- Active Nintendo Switch Online membership: Nintendo Support states that online play requires an active membership.
- Internet access: The console must be connected to the internet.
Membership is unavailable in some countries, so do not assume that an online feature shown on the product page is available everywhere. Availability can vary by country, and the current subscription price is not established here. Check Nintendo’s current service information for your region before buying if online play is central to your decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThese requirements apply to the online features Nintendo describes, including online Survival Golf. They do not turn the game into a flying title; they only determine how you access supported sports with remote players.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Controller and accessory requirements
Nintendo Support lists several Joy-Con configurations, depending on the sport and activity:
- Paired Joy-Con controllers.
- A single Joy-Con.
- Joy-Con used with the Leg Strap for supported Soccer play.
The exact setup can differ by sport, so follow the on-screen instructions when starting an activity. Nintendo also states that Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible and that the software does not support handheld mode. In practical terms, this is a motion-focused game: plan to use compatible Joy-Con hardware rather than a Pro Controller or the console’s built-in handheld controls.
What the Leg Strap does—and does not do
The Leg Strap is relevant to some Soccer gameplay. Nintendo’s instructions explain how to switch to Leg-Strap Mode, and Nintendo identifies the strap as required for some Soccer play. Nothing in Nintendo’s product or support information connects the accessory to flight, aircraft control or any additional sport outside the listed lineup.
Treat the strap as a Soccer-input option, not as a reason to expect a hidden mode. If your interest is specifically Soccer, confirm which play modes require it and whether your package includes the accessory before purchasing.

The title’s wording suggests that some shoppers have encountered the phrase “flying mode” in a search result, discussion or product description. The available official information does not establish what that phrase means or identify it as a Nintendo Switch Sports feature.
It may be a mistaken association with another Nintendo game, a user request for a Pilotwings-style activity, or an informal description of motion controls. None of those possibilities changes the confirmed lineup. When evaluating a listing, compare its claims with Nintendo’s eight-sport list rather than relying on an isolated phrase.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
A reliable check is to ask three questions:
- Is the activity named on Nintendo’s current game page?
- Does Nintendo provide instructions for it in the game’s support material?
- Is the claim describing an actual sport in the game, or merely a user’s suggestion or comparison?
For flying, the answer to the first question is no based on the published lineup, and Nintendo’s support material does not establish a support mode for it.

Search for the correct product
The honest product search phrase is “Nintendo Switch Sports Nintendo Switch game.” That describes the game itself without promising an aviation feature. If a retailer’s title or image adds “flying mode,” verify the claim against Nintendo’s official sports list before placing an order.
Do not base the decision on an unverified price
A current street price, regional promotion and review consensus are not established by the available official information. Prices and stock can change by country and retailer, so they should be checked at the time of purchase rather than treated as permanent facts.
Separate the game from the online service
The game purchase and Nintendo Switch Online membership serve different purposes. You can evaluate the eight-sport collection for local play without assuming an online subscription. If remote multiplayer is essential, confirm membership availability and the account requirements in your country first.
Decision guide
| Your main goal | Recommendation | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Flying, aircraft or aerial exploration | Skip it for that purpose | Flying is not included in Nintendo’s listed lineup. |
| A broad motion-sports collection | Consider buying | Eight sports are listed, including Golf and Basketball updates. |
| Local party play | Consider buying | Nintendo presents the game for in-person play with compatible Joy-Con configurations. |
| Online competition | Consider conditionally | Online features require internet, a Nintendo Account and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership; country availability varies. |
| Soccer with leg motion input | Check the Leg Strap requirement | Nintendo says the strap is required for some Soccer play and documents Leg-Strap Mode. |
Final verdict
Nintendo Switch Sports is not a sensible purchase for a flying mode because Nintendo’s current official lineup does not list one. It is a reasonable candidate if what you really want is a motion-controlled collection of Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara, with local play and optional online features subject to Nintendo’s membership and regional requirements. Make the purchase on that basis—not on the expectation of flight.
