Short answer: Nex Playground is worth considering for families with children about 5 and older who want short, active games that several people can play together. At Nex’s listed US price of $299, you get the console, camera-based motion controls, remote, cables, privacy cover, and five starter games. The broader library is a subscription: Play Pass costs $49 for three months or $89 for 12 months, putting the listed first-year hardware-plus-annual-pass total at $388 before tax or discounts. If your family wants deep solo games, sophisticated graphics, or rarely has a clear 6-by-6-foot play area, it is a weaker buy.
What Nex Playground is—and who it is for
Nex Playground is a TV-connected game console controlled primarily by body movement. A wide-angle camera watches the play area, and the console’s motion engine turns gestures, steps, swings, and other movements into game actions. The included remote is used for setup, menus, and selecting games; current multiplayer games do not require additional gameplay controllers.

The design is aimed at shared, active play rather than long, individual campaigns. Nex recommends the system for ages 5 and up. Three- and four-year-olds may enjoy some titles with an adult or older sibling, but the company cautions that certain physical challenges can be difficult for children younger than six. A family that wants 10- or 15-minute activities, party games, and light exercise is the natural audience. A player seeking a large role-playing adventure or competitive online ecosystem should look elsewhere.
Does Nex Playground require a subscription?
No. The console works without Play Pass, and five starter games are included. A subscription is required for most of the larger catalog, however, so the practical answer for many families is “yes, if you want variety.” Nex’s Play Pass page describes access to more than 60 active games, with new games and updates added monthly.

| Option | What you receive | US listed price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Console only | Hardware plus five starter games | $299 one time | Trying the format without a recurring commitment |
| Play Pass quarterly | Broader catalog for three months | $49 per three-month pass | Testing the library or using it seasonally |
| Play Pass annual | Broader catalog for 12 months | $89 per 12-month pass | Families expecting regular use |
| Hardware plus annual pass | Console and one year of expanded access | $388 before tax or discounts | A first-year budget for a committed household |
The annual pass works out to about $7.42 per month when spread across 12 months, while the quarterly option is about $16.33 per month during its three-month term. That is a cash-flow comparison, not a promise that either plan automatically renews on the same terms. Check the live offer and renewal details before paying. One pass can be used on up to two Playground consoles in one household.
The five included titles are Fruit Ninja, Starri, Party Fowl, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe, and Go Keeper. They let a family evaluate camera tracking and the basic game loop without buying Play Pass. Nex does not offer individual purchases for the wider catalog according to the independent TechRadar review, so a household that wants a particular subscription title generally has to take the pass rather than buy that game alone.
What comes in the box?
- Nex Playground console with its camera and motion-tracking hardware
- Magnetic privacy cover for the camera
- Remote for setup, navigation, and choosing games
- Power cable and HDMI cable
- Five starter games: Fruit Ninja, Starri, Party Fowl, Whack-a-Mole Deluxe, and Go Keeper
You need a TV with an available HDMI input, a power outlet, and enough unobstructed floor space for players to move safely. Nex recommends approximately 6 feet by 6 feet (about 1.8 by 1.8 meters) and positioning the camera so it can see players clearly. Measure the intended area before purchase; a narrow space between a sofa and coffee table can make tracking and safety worse.

1. Connect the hardware
- Place the Playground where its camera has a clear view of the play zone.
- Connect the console to the TV with the included HDMI cable.
- Connect power, switch the TV to the correct HDMI input, and turn on the system.
- Use the included remote to follow the on-screen setup and network prompts.
2. Prepare the room
- Clear toys, low tables, loose rugs, and other trip hazards from the recommended area.
- Keep players far enough from walls, lamps, and furniture to swing arms safely.
- Place the camera where faces and bodies are not blocked by furniture or strong backlighting.
- Use the magnetic cover when the camera is not in use if you want a physical privacy reminder.
3. Start with the included games
Play the five starter titles with every likely player before subscribing. This reveals whether children understand the movement prompts, whether the camera sees the whole group, and whether the available room is genuinely comfortable. If the family enjoys those short sessions but wants more themes, activate Play Pass from the official purchase flow or through the retailer where you bought the console.
4. Download games for offline play
Nex says games can be played offline after download. An internet connection is therefore important for initial setup, downloading titles, and receiving updates, but a family does not need to keep the console online for every play session. Download the games you expect to use before taking the system to a location with unreliable internet.

What games are available?
Play Pass includes more than 60 active games, according to Nex, and the catalog changes as new titles and updates are added monthly. Recognizable properties listed by Nex include Bluey, Barbie, NFL FLAG, Sesame Street, and PAC-MAN. The catalog mixes movement challenges, rhythm activities, sports-style play, and family party formats rather than trying to replicate a traditional controller library.
The breadth is the main reason to subscribe, but “60-plus” does not mean 60 deep, console-scale adventures. TechRadar’s hands-on review found the games approachable and well suited to short sessions, parties, and light fitness, while also noting limited depth, less polished visuals than mainstream consoles, and performance problems in some titles. Set expectations accordingly: the value comes from quick shared activities and recognizable themes, not cinematic presentation or hundreds of hours in one game.
Recommended Free Tools
Hasbro and Nex have announced a collaboration involving titles such as Hungry Hungry Hippos: Move N’ Munch, with Connect 4 and Candy Land adaptations also described. Announced projects are not proof that every title is currently available, so check the in-device catalog before buying for a specific game.
Age, accessibility, and physical fit
Children around five and six
Nex’s formal recommendation starts at age 5. Younger children may need an adult or older sibling to interpret prompts, wait for turns, and prevent collisions. Some games demand quick reactions, balance, or larger movements; those physical requirements can be challenging for children under 6 even when they understand the rules.
Mixed-age households
The camera format can work well when siblings and adults share a session because players can take turns without buying extra controllers. Adults should still supervise younger children and adjust the game choice when a title involves fast movement. A child who tires quickly may get more from rhythm or turn-based activities than from a high-speed challenge.

Players with mobility or visual limitations
Because games depend on body tracking and clear camera visibility, suitability varies by title and player. No comprehensive accessibility rating for every game is published. Treat the six-by-six-foot recommendation as a starting point, not a guarantee that every movement challenge will be comfortable. Review the on-screen instructions and test the included games with the intended player before committing to a year of access.

Privacy, recording, and child-safety claims
Nex states that motion tracking happens locally on the device and that video is not processed in the cloud. It also says some games temporarily record video locally for replays or highlights, and that those recordings are not saved. These are the manufacturer’s statements, not an independent privacy audit.
Nex says its games contain no ads, microtransactions, or chat features. It also says downloaded games work offline after download. Those design choices reduce common child-gaming concerns: there are no in-game purchases to approve and no built-in public chat to moderate. Parents should still supervise play, review the catalog, and use the physical camera cover when the system is idle.
The absence of chat and advertising does not turn the device into a general-purpose child-safety product. The camera still needs a view of the room during play, and families should decide where the console may be used and who may participate.
Regional pricing and purchase terms
The figures above are for the United States and come from Nex’s listed product and Play Pass prices. Nex’s UK and Ireland FAQ, dated June 15, 2026, lists different regional starting prices: £269 for the console in the UK and €319 in Ireland. It lists annual Play Pass at £90 or €99 and quarterly Play Pass at £45 or €49, respectively. Do not combine these regional prices with the US $388 first-year calculation.

Nex’s direct purchase terms say a first Play Pass bought directly from Nex may be fully refunded within 14 days of activation, subject to the stated conditions. Purchases made through Amazon or another retailer follow that seller’s policies, and retailer-bought codes may take longer to arrive than in-device activation. Do not assume the 14-day term or immediate delivery applies to every seller.
Strengths and trade-offs
| Where it succeeds | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Quick, active games that families can play together | Most of the catalog requires an ongoing Play Pass |
| Five games included with the console for a no-subscription trial | The included set may feel small after repeated sessions |
| No extra gameplay controllers for current multiplayer titles | Players need a clear area of roughly 6 by 6 feet |
| Recognizable family properties and monthly catalog additions | Games are generally shorter and less deep than mainstream console releases |
| Local motion tracking, a physical camera cover, and no stated ads, purchases, or chat | Nex’s privacy and recording descriptions are manufacturer claims, not an independent audit |
| Offline play after games are downloaded | Internet is still needed for setup, downloads, and updates |
How Nex Playground compares with other family-gaming choices
The right comparison is not simply “which console has better graphics.” Use the following questions to match the format to your household:
- First-year cost: Include the $299 hardware price and, if you expect regular use, the $89 annual pass rather than comparing hardware alone.
- Games without recurring payment: Nex includes five starter games; the wider catalog is tied to Play Pass, and individual purchases are not available according to TechRadar’s review.
- Age and movement: Nex is designed around children about 5 and older who can move safely in the camera’s view.
- Room requirements: Confirm that a stable, unobstructed 6-by-6-foot area is available every time you expect to play.
- Group play versus depth: Choose Nex for active turn-taking and short sessions; choose a conventional game system if one player wants expansive worlds, detailed progression, or long campaigns.
- Graphics and performance: TechRadar found the presentation less polished than mainstream consoles and reported performance issues in some games.
- Privacy and connectivity: Nex says tracking is local, some replay clips are temporary and unsaved, and downloaded games can work offline. Families with stricter requirements should evaluate those claims against their own privacy standards.
Who should buy it—and who should skip it?
Buy it if these statements are true
- Your children are roughly 5 or older and enjoy movement-based activities.
- At least two people will often play together.
- You have a dependable, clear floor area near the TV.
- You are comfortable paying $89 per year for the broader US catalog, or you are happy to stay with five included games.
- You value approachable sessions more than high-end graphics or deep progression.
Skip it or wait if these statements describe your household
- You want a large library of individual games without a subscription.
- Your available space is cramped, cluttered, or difficult to keep safe.
- Your main player is younger than 5 or has movement needs that the available games may not accommodate.
- You expect a traditional console experience with sophisticated visuals and consistently polished performance.
- The family is unlikely to use it often enough to justify either the hardware price or a pass.
A practical buying checklist
- Measure the room: Mark a roughly 6-by-6-foot rectangle and check that the camera can see the entire area.
- Budget both scenarios: Decide whether $299 for the starter pack is enough or whether your likely first year is $388 before tax or discounts.
- Test the included games first: Use them to judge tracking, physical effort, and how quickly children lose interest.
- Check the live catalog: Confirm that the games and properties your family expects are currently available, rather than relying on an announcement.
- Choose a pass term: Pick quarterly access for a short trial or seasonal use; choose annual access when regular play makes the lower monthly equivalent worthwhile.
- Read the seller’s terms: Direct Nex purchases and retailer purchases can have different refund and code-delivery rules.
- Set privacy habits: Explain when the camera is active, use the magnetic cover when it is not, and keep the console in a family-approved room.
Common problems and fixes
The camera misses a player
Move the console so the camera has a direct, unobstructed view, increase the usable floor area, and reduce backlighting. Recheck that furniture or a second player is not blocking the person the game is trying to track.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChildren keep bumping into furniture
Stop the session and clear the full play zone. The six-by-six-foot recommendation is a safety and tracking baseline, not a decorative guideline. Remove low obstacles and have players take turns when a title becomes crowded.
Best Value
- Transform your living room into an active play space with built-in camera and AI technology that tracks natural body movements, allowing up to 4 players to play simultaneously without controllers.
- Includes 5 free games (Fruit Ninja, Starri, Whac-a-Mole, Go Keeper, and Party Fowl) with access to 30+ additional games through Play Pass subscription.
- Play with beloved characters including Barbie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Peppa Pig, Elmo, Miraculous Ladybug, Gabby's Dollhouse, and Kung Fu Panda.
- Easy setup with simple HDMI connection to TV or projector, compact design fits on any console or mantle, and portable enough for playdates.
- Experience various game genres from dance to fitness to sports, with new content added monthly for year-round family entertainment.
The starter games are not enough
That is the expected trade-off of the console-only purchase. Activate a quarterly pass if you want to sample the larger catalog without a year-long commitment, or select the annual pass when the family has already demonstrated regular use.
A retailer code has not arrived
Retailer-bought codes may take longer than in-device activation. Check the seller’s order status and support policy rather than applying Nex’s direct-purchase timing or refund terms automatically.
A game feels shallow or runs poorly
Short-session design and uneven performance are known limitations noted by TechRadar. Try a different title or return to the included games that track reliably; do not buy the system expecting every game to match the production quality of a mainstream console.

Nex Playground is a sensible family purchase when the goal is active, shared play in short bursts. The five included games make the $299 console testable without a subscription, while Play Pass expands the experience to more than 60 games for $49 every three months or $89 for a year in the US. The decision turns on three practical questions: will your family use a clear six-by-six-foot space, are the intended players comfortable with movement-based games, and is the recurring catalog cost acceptable? If the answer to all three is yes, Nex Playground can earn regular family use. If you want deep solo games, premium graphics, or a large one-time-purchase library, spend your budget elsewhere.
