No. NASA has not said it is searching for caves in order to build its first Moon base. What the agency has reported is radar evidence of a cave extending more than 200 feet from the base of a lunar pit, and it has described studies into detecting underground voids. Its current Moon Base pages describe a phased program centered near the lunar South Pole, but they do not name a cave as the base site or say that finding one is a requirement.
The distinction matters. A cave on the Moon and a cave search tied to a base plan are two separate claims, and only the first is supported by the NASA material available.

What NASA has actually reported about a cave
On July 18, 2024, NASA said scientists had reanalyzed radar data collected in 2010 by Mini-RF, an instrument on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). The reanalysis found evidence of a cave extending more than 200 feet from the base of a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis, roughly 230 miles northeast of the Apollo 11 landing site.

NASA says the cave’s full extent is unknown and that it could stretch for miles. That possibility is an open question, not a measured length.

Pits themselves were known before this work. NASA says a pit in the same general area was confirmed in 2009 using images from Japan’s Kaguya orbiter, and that more than 200 lunar pits have been reported in total (a 2014 NASA count of reported pits, not of confirmed caves).
How a lunar pit might connect to a cave
NASA’s explanation for how such features form is a hypothesis. Lava may have flowed beneath a hardened crust and drained away, leaving a hollow tube. A later collapse of the roof could then open a pit or skylight into that tube. That sequence fits the radar evidence, but it has not been directly observed.
The same logic means a pit is not proof of a cave. Many pits may have no connected void beneath them, and the radar result describes one feature, not a pattern across all of them.

Why caves interest planners
Caves and the overhangs of pits could offer conditions that the open lunar surface does not. The sources discuss three possible benefits: more stable temperatures, some protection from radiation, solar exposure and micrometeorites, and reduced dust. Each is a potential advantage, and each has a different level of support.
The best-quantified number is a temperature model. NASA’s July 2022 account reports that modeled temperatures in the permanently shadowed parts of one pit stay near 63°F (17°C). That is a model of the pit’s shaded reaches. NASA notes that a cave extending from such a pit would reach similar temperatures only under certain conditions, and no one has measured the temperature inside the cave shown by radar.
Detecting underground voids on Earth
NASA reported in September 2025 on field experiments near Flagstaff, Arizona, and Tulelake, California. Researchers struck a metal plate with a 10-pound (4.5-kilogram) sledgehammer to generate seismic signals, then measured how those signals reflected off known caves and lava tubes. The blows were spaced 3.3 feet (1 meter) apart along a 420-foot (125-meter) line.

The work showed that this approach can detect subsurface voids in those Earth settings. NASA describes the hand-struck method as a proof of principle and discusses possible future mechanical impact sources. It does not report a deployment on the Moon, and a method that works on a known cave in Arizona has not been shown to work on the Moon’s surface.
How the cave work relates to the Moon Base plan
NASA’s Moon Base overview describes an enduring human presence near the South Pole, developed in phases. The phases page covers robotic missions, technology demonstrations, mobility, science payloads and infrastructure. Neither page identifies a cave as the base site, and neither says a cave search is a prerequisite for building.
The cave findings and the Moon Base plan are therefore related context within lunar exploration, not a documented project link. A cave could become relevant to base planning if later missions confirm it and show it is accessible and useful, but that is a future possibility, not a current NASA position.

Could astronauts live in lunar caves?
Scientists have described the idea, but none of the NASA material shows an operational plan. Three statements are often quoted, and each carries a different weight.
- Noah Petro, LRO project scientist at Goddard, on the radar result: “Now the analysis of the Mini-RF radar data tells us how far these caves might extend.” This describes what the data suggests about extent, not what the cave is.
- David Paige, co-author and lead of the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment on LRO: “Humans evolved living in caves, and to caves we might return when we live on the Moon.” This is Paige’s own perspective, not a NASA commitment to build a cave habitat.
- Tyler Wagner, an LRO scientist, in NASA’s 2014 account, describing a potential habitat: “A habitat placed in a pit — ideally several dozen meters back under an overhang — would provide a very safe location for astronauts: no radiation, no micrometeorites, possibly very little dust, and no wild day-night temperature swings.” This is a 2014 assessment of a possibility. Its claim of “no radiation” is not a verified general property of lunar caves, since shielding depends on the depth and geometry of the void.

What remains unknown
- Whether the radar-detected cave is open to the surface at any point the way a human could enter it.
- How stable its roof is, since NASA’s pit-collapse explanation implies the roof has already failed in places.
- Whether a method proven on Earth using a hand-struck plate can be adapted to the Moon’s surface, and with which impact source.
- Whether any NASA program document, now or later, names caves as a site-selection criterion for the Moon Base.
NASA’s Moon Base plans are still evolving, so schedules and priorities can change. The reliable reading today is that NASA has reported a cave-like feature and a way to look for voids. It has not reported a cave search as a step toward a base.
