It does show that Gemini Apps and the Gemini API offer different model choices, workflows, and usage limits. If the web version feels restricted, the cause may be the selected model, quota, plan, or regional availability rather than lower output quality from the same model.
First, “Nano Banana” is not every Google model
Nano Banana is Google’s name for its Gemini image-generation family. Google’s model catalog lists multiple variants, while its broader catalog includes other generative-media and Gemini models. So an experience with Nano Banana cannot establish that all Google models are “nerfed.”

Google describes the image variants in terms of different priorities: Nano Banana 2.1 as a high-efficiency workhorse, Nano Banana 2 as its prior-generation workhorse, Lite as a speed-and-cost option, Pro as a premium option for complex visual tasks, and the original Nano Banana as a legacy model. These are Google’s product descriptions, not independent benchmark results. The current model names and recommendations are listed in Google’s Gemini API model catalog and its image-generation guide.

Why the web app may feel more limited
The app’s selected chat model affects image generation
In Gemini Apps on a computer, Google says Flash-Lite uses Nano Banana 2 Lite for image requests, while Flash or Pro uses Nano Banana 2. Paid subscribers can redo an image with Nano Banana Pro after creating it with Nano Banana 2 or Lite. Google says that Pro redo is unavailable once the daily Nano Banana 2 quota has been reached. The exact choices and availability can depend on supported countries and app languages. See Google’s image-generation instructions for Gemini Apps.

Quotas and plan access can change what you can do
Google says Gemini Apps limits may vary with demand, plan, prompt or file complexity, and the selected feature; it also notes that limits and model availability can change. Its U.S.-oriented plan help distinguishes access and limits across plans, but those terms are not universal and may change. Consult the live Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page for the account and region that apply to you.
The API is a different workflow, not proof of a better model
The Gemini API exposes named model endpoints and capabilities that differ by variant. For example, Google’s guide documents 1K, 2K, and 4K image generation for some variants, while Lite is limited to 1K; grounding options also vary by model. The guide says generated images include SynthID watermarking. These distinctions describe documented API capabilities, not evidence that a browser deliberately downgrades the same model’s output.

What “nerfed” can—and cannot—mean
If you get a weaker result in Gemini Apps, several explanations are consistent with Google’s documentation: the app may be using a different image variant than you expected, you may have hit a quota, a feature may require a paid plan, or availability may differ by region, language, account, or capacity. Documentation confirms these product differences. It does not show that Google universally lowers image quality on the web, nor does it prove that the same model produces worse results in a browser than through the API.

A result can follow a prompt well but render text poorly, or look polished while failing to preserve details across edits. Google describes model capabilities and intended trade-offs, but those descriptions are not controlled, independent app-versus-API test results.

How to compare the web app and API fairly
To find out whether a difference is in the model or in the product experience, keep the comparison as consistent as the available controls allow:
- Record the product surface and model. Note whether you used Gemini Apps, Google AI Studio, or the Gemini API, and capture the exact model name or version shown. Do not treat different variants as the same-model test.
- Use the same task and prompt at roughly the same time. Record the account type and plan, since access and limits may differ.
- Match the inputs and settings. Use the same reference images, resolution where selectable, number of editing turns, and grounding settings where available.
- Compare distinct outcomes. Check prompt adherence, readable text, reference fidelity, consistency across edits, response time, and how much usable quota you have.
- Describe the result at the right level. If the model or settings differ, call it a comparison of product experiences—not proof that Google nerfed the underlying model.
Google’s model catalog, API image guide, Gemini Apps image help, and limits and upgrades help are the relevant references for checking current names, capabilities, and access. Because Google can change model availability and limits, verify them for your own account when testing.
