Yes. MTG Arena is free to download and play on desktop and mobile, and you do not have to buy anything to access its core gameplay. Wizards of the Coast describes purchases as optional. You can earn gold by playing, use it for packs and events, progress on the free Set Mastery track, and enter selected events without an entry fee.
The important qualification is that Arena has a free-to-play economy rather than an everything-is-free model. Is MTG Arena free to play?
MTG Arena is free to download, install and start playing. Wizards of the Coast’s official getting-started FAQ states, “MTG Arena is free to download.” The same guidance says purchases can enhance the experience but are not required to access the full depth of gameplay.
That means there is no mandatory subscription, starter purchase or paid unlock that you must buy before playing matches. A new player can create an account, complete the opening activities, play games, earn progression experience and accumulate in-game currency without entering payment details.

Free access does not mean every item or mode has no cost. Packs, draft entries, cosmetics and some reward upgrades can require gold or gems. The distinction is that those costs are part of an optional progression economy rather than a paywall in front of the game itself.
What you get without spending money
A no-spend player can use the core progression systems and spend earned currency on collection-building activities. The official materials establish these free routes:
- Play matches and complete quests to earn progression and gold.
- Receive rewards on the base Set Mastery track by earning XP through play.
- Use gold earned in the game to buy packs, enter eligible events or purchase cosmetics.
- Participate in free-entry offerings such as Midweek Magic when they are available in the client.

Gold and gems: the two currencies are not the same
Arena separates its economy into gold and gems. Both can be used for certain game-related purchases, but they are obtained differently and should not be treated as interchangeable cash.

How gold works
Gold is the principal earn-as-you-play currency. Wizards says it comes from games, quests, wins and events, so regular play can build a balance without a cash purchase. You can then direct that balance toward packs, draft entries or cosmetic items.
The official information does not establish a guaranteed daily gold allowance, a universal quest payout or a particular amount earned per win. Those values can also be affected by current rules and events. Treat any number shown in a current client quest or event panel as the applicable term for that activity rather than assuming it is a permanent schedule.

How gems work
Gems are the currency most directly connected to spending because they can be bought in the store. They can also be earned, including through eligible game activities and reward tracks. Gems cover some of the same categories as gold—events, packs and cosmetics—but the exchange rates and eligibility of a particular purchase are set by the current offer.

The accurate distinction is that gems are both earnable and purchasable, while gold is presented as an earned currency.
Why the distinction matters
When deciding whether you need to spend, ask which currency an item actually requires. A player who has accumulated gold may be able to enter a draft without buying gems. Conversely, an offer priced in gems may require either saved earned gems or a store purchase. Checking the price displayed in the client prevents you from assuming that gold and gems can always substitute for one another.
Can you play MTG Arena without buying packs?
Yes. Buying packs is one way to expand a collection, not a prerequisite for playing. The base Set Mastery track provides rewards as you earn XP, and gold earned through normal activity can be saved for packs or used for other options. Drafting is another collection-building route because the cards you select in a Quick Draft remain with you after the event.
A no-pack approach requires patience and prioritization. Instead of converting every currency reward immediately, you can reserve gold for an event, use free-entry opportunities when offered, and let the free track supply incremental rewards. The base Set Mastery track
Set Mastery is the baseline progression system. You earn XP through play and move along a reward track that is available to everyone. You do not need to buy an upgrade to participate in this track.

Because mastery is tied to a particular set, the contents and timing of the track are not permanent. A reward shown for one set should not be treated as a promise for the next set.
What the Mastery Pass adds
The Mastery Pass is an optional upgrade that unlocks an additional reward track. Wizards describes it as “an optional way for players to earn additional rewards through Set Mastery.” The extra track can contain packs, individual card rewards, gold, gems, event tokens and cosmetics, with the exact combination varying by set.
For the Reality Fracture set, whose Arena release was announced for September 29, 2026, the published reward description includes those categories. That is set-specific information, not a guarantee that a later set will offer the same number or mix of items.
Is the Mastery Pass worth it?
There is no single answer because the pass becomes more useful when you actually claim a large share of its levels. The current pass price is not established in the available official information, so a precise break-even calculation would be guesswork. Use these decision questions instead:

- Build a currency balance. Earn gold through games, quests, wins and eligible events. You do not need to buy gems if you are paying the listed entry with gold.
- Open the current event listing. Check the Quick Draft entry displayed in the client, because event costs and terms can change.
- Choose the payment currency. If the listing shows the documented terms, select 5,000 gold or 750 gems according to the balance you want to use.
- Draft and play the event. The cards you select are retained, and your wins determine additional event rewards under the current rules.

Free-entry events are useful even when their rewards are cosmetic. They give you a way to play an event format without paying an entry fee and may contribute to your broader play routine. The exact format, dates and reward should be treated as current-client details.
Quests, games and wins
Quests and matches are the foundation of the earn-as-you-play model. Completing them and winning games can generate gold, while playing also advances Set Mastery XP. Events may provide additional opportunities, but the amount and timing of rewards depend on the specific event.
