No. Mozilla is not a Chinese company: Mozilla Foundation is a California nonprofit, and Mozilla Corporation is its wholly owned subsidiary, headquartered in San Francisco. Mozilla does have a China-operating subsidiary, Mozilla Online, but that relationship does not mean a Chinese entity owns Mozilla.
Who owns Mozilla?
“Mozilla” refers to a family of organizations and an open-source project, rather than one legal entity. Mozilla’s organizations page identifies the Mozilla Foundation as a California nonprofit corporation and Mozilla Corporation as its wholly owned subsidiary. The Foundation says the Corporation is a taxable subsidiary serving its parent’s public-benefit goals.

In June 2026, Mozilla announced that Mozilla.org had been established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit to steward the long-term success of the Mozilla Project. Mozilla said its organizations remain under the Mozilla Foundation umbrella, with Mozilla.org coordinating the portfolio and community initiatives. Its June 23, 2026 announcement reaffirmed nonprofit ownership at the top.

Mozilla Foundation’s audited 2024 financial statements state that Mozilla Corporation is headquartered in San Francisco, California. The statements also report operations in several countries, including China. Having operations in a country is not the same as being headquartered there or owned by an entity there.

What is Mozilla’s connection to China?
Mozilla’s organizations page describes Mozilla Online as a separate organization operating in China and wholly owned by Mozilla Corporation. In other words, the stated ownership chain runs from the U.S.-based Corporation to the China-operating subsidiary—not from a Chinese owner to Mozilla’s parent organizations.
What is known about Mozilla Online’s later status?
The 2024 audited statements say Mozilla filed legal claims against Beijing Mozilla Firefox Information Technology, Ltd. (Mozilla Online) in May 2023, after the Corporation’s contract with Mozilla Online expired and the parties did not reach a renewal agreement. Mozilla said it intended in the long term to wind down Mozilla Online’s China operations. The audit reports that litigation was still in process as of December 31, 2024; it does not establish whether the litigation or wind-down was completed afterward. Mozilla’s organization page continues to list Mozilla Online.

Does the open-source project have the same ownership structure?
No. Legal ownership and project governance answer different questions. Mozilla’s governance page says authority in the open-source community is primarily distributed among volunteer and employed community members according to their contributions, irrespective of employment affiliation. That describes participation and project authority; it does not remove the legal entities’ ownership or boards.
