What kind of game is Monster Hunter Stories 3?
It is the third RPG in the Monster Hunter Stories series. You play as a Rider who raises and bonds with monsters, then fights alongside them in turn-based battles. That makes it a different proposition from the mainline Monster Hunter games’ real-time hunts.

Combat and monster building are the main strengths
PC Gamer praised the complexity of battling and breeding, especially the build possibilities created by monster genes. TechRadar also highlighted the turn-based combat, cast, setting and side stories. If you enjoy experimenting with a team and tuning its abilities, those systems are the clearest reason to play.

Expect repetition and a gradual start
Building a strong team can take work. PC Gamer noted that late-game preparation may involve tracking down genes, leveling monsters and farming equipment materials. TechRadar described the opening as slow and heavy on exposition and tutorials. Newcomers may appreciate the guidance; returning Stories players may find the early explanations drag.
Story and traversal are less consistent
PC Gamer felt the central crises and companions did not receive enough development. TechRadar praised the setting and cast but also pointed to frustrating platforming. Those weaknesses matter more if you want a tightly paced story or expect every part of exploration to feel polished.

Steam recommends an SSD. Its minimum-spec estimate is 1080p at 30 fps on Low settings, with possible frame-rate drops in graphics-intensive scenes. No universal PC performance benchmark is established, so do not treat that estimate as a promise for every system.
For context, PC Gamer’s reviewer used an NVIDIA RTX 4070 Super, Intel Core i7-14700KF and 32 GB RAM; that was the reviewer’s test system, not a requirement. TechRadar’s reviewer reported playing for more than 50 hours on a Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 with an RTX 5070. Neither review system tells you exactly how the game will perform on your own hardware.

The Premium Deluxe DLC Pack includes additional layered armor, monster hair and Rudy outfits. Some bonuses require gameplay progress. Capcom’s October 7, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement also says the Rudy Side Story is included with Deluxe Edition, Premium Deluxe Edition and Deluxe Kit; check the exact package on the storefront you plan to use because names and entitlements can differ by platform.

Try it before committing
Steam lists a free trial. That gives you a practical way to check both the turn-based combat loop and performance on your own PC before paying. Capcom also says the Xbox Series X|S trial carries progress into the full Xbox game; that statement is specific to Xbox and does not establish trial-save behavior on Steam.

Release date and PC storefronts
Steam lists March 12, 2026 as the game’s release date. TechRadar gives March 13, 2026, a one-day discrepancy that may reflect storefront time-zone presentation versus review convention. For the Steam listing, use Steam’s date rather than treating both dates as identical.
The game was already available on Steam before Capcom’s October 7, 2026 announcement of Xbox on PC availability beginning November 18, 2026. That announcement describes an additional PC distribution path, not the game’s first PC release. Capcom says the Xbox version supports Xbox Play Anywhere and continuity of saves and content across Xbox Series X|S, Windows 11 PCs and compatible handheld devices. Capcom Town Store had also announced availability, including the Steam version, on April 17, 2026.
Controls, accessibility and handheld checks
A controller is optional. TechRadar’s reviewer primarily used an Xbox Wireless Controller and also used mouse and keyboard intermittently. Reported options include customizable keyboard and mouse bindings, subtitle font-size adjustment, speaker names in cutscene dialogue, fixed or rotating minimap settings, persistent quest markers, warnings for much higher-level monsters and optional hints after some lost battles.

Who is it worth buying for?
- A good fit: You want turn-based battles, enjoy collecting and breeding creatures, and are happy to explore, develop a team and complete side stories.
- A weaker fit: You dislike grinding, want consistently smooth platforming or prefer a tightly focused, briskly paced story.
- Before upgrading editions: Decide whether the Rudy story, cosmetic items and Premium DLC Pack are worth the difference to you; compare the package contents on your chosen storefront.
- Before buying on PC: Check your system against Steam’s requirements and use the trial if you want to judge performance rather than infer it from another reviewer’s hardware.
Steam’s review snapshot accessed October 9, 2026 showed 80% of 2,459 English reviews as “Very Positive” and 70% of 132 recent reviews as “Mostly Positive.” These are rolling user-review counts and sentiments, not a stable critic score or sales figure.
