No. Mira Murati was OpenAI’s interim CEO for a short period in November 2023, not its permanent chief executive. Sam Altman returned as CEO on November 29, 2023, and Murati resumed her role as CTO. She left OpenAI in September 2024; reporting published in June 2026 identified her as CEO of Thinking Machines Lab.
Why was Mira Murati called OpenAI’s CEO?
On November 17, 2023, OpenAI’s board removed Sam Altman and appointed Murati, then the company’s chief technology officer, as interim CEO. OpenAI said it was beginning a search for a permanent successor. The company also noted that Murati had been on its leadership team for five years, leading research, product, and safety functions. OpenAI’s announcement described the appointment as an interim one.

That distinction matters: Murati took charge during a leadership transition, but OpenAI did not announce her as the permanent CEO.

When did Sam Altman return as CEO?
On November 29, 2023, OpenAI announced that Altman would return as CEO and Murati would return to her CTO role. Altman wrote, “I am returning to OpenAI as CEO. Mira will return to her role as CTO.” OpenAI’s follow-up announcement confirmed the change.

Murati’s interim CEO tenure therefore ended with Altman’s return. They did not hold the OpenAI CEO role simultaneously.
What happened to Murati after OpenAI?
She left OpenAI in September 2024
Murati left the company on September 25, 2024, after six and a half years at OpenAI, according to Axios. In her departure statement, she said, “I’m stepping away because I want to create the time and space to do my own exploration.”

She became CEO of Thinking Machines Lab
Reporting published June 4, 2026 described Murati as CEO of Thinking Machines Lab. The company had shipped Tinker, an API for fine-tuning open-source AI models, according to TechCrunch. That is her reported post-OpenAI role; it is not a position at OpenAI.

OpenAI’s official structure page, updated October 28, 2025, identifies Sam Altman as CEO. It also describes the organization’s nonprofit-to-public-benefit-corporation structure. OpenAI’s structure page is the company’s source for its listed leadership and organizational setup.
