What’s actually slowing this PC down?

No. Minecraft is not completely free to play online on Xbox. You normally need access to the paid Minecraft game (or an eligible Game Pass catalog entitlement) and an Xbox Game Pass plan that includes online console multiplayer. Realms is optional, and the free-to-play multiplayer exception does not make Minecraft free.
The two separate requirements
Xbox online Minecraft has two distinct entitlements. First, the account must own Minecraft or access it through a current Game Pass catalog plan. Second, the Xbox account needs a Game Pass plan with online console multiplayer for internet play. Buying the game does not automatically include console multiplayer access.

What you need for each type of play
| Situation | Minecraft access | Paid Xbox online plan | Realms required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo offline | Game purchase or eligible catalog access | No | No |
| Local split-screen on one Xbox | Game purchase or eligible catalog access | Usually no online subscription | No |
| Join a friend’s online world | Game purchase or eligible catalog access | Yes | No |
| Play on a persistent private Realm | Game purchase or eligible catalog access | Yes on Xbox | Yes, paid by the Realm owner |
| Use the Bedrock trial | Limited trial entitlement | Not a normal multiplayer solution | Unavailable |
| Play an Xbox free-to-play game | Depends on that game | Xbox permits online multiplayer without a paid plan | Not applicable |
Xbox’s free-to-play rule applies to games designated free to play. Minecraft remains a paid game, even though it has online servers and optional in-game purchases. See Xbox’s plan comparison for the distinction.

Which Game Pass plan is needed?
Xbox currently identifies Essential, Premium and Ultimate as plans that include online console multiplayer. Names, prices, catalogs and benefits can change, and availability varies by region, platform, plan and date. Verify the offer shown on your account at the Game Pass page.
- Essential: The likely lowest-cost choice when the goal is Minecraft multiplayer. Xbox currently describes it as including online console multiplayer and 50-plus games.
- Premium: Includes online multiplayer and a larger catalog, currently described by Xbox as 200-plus games.
- Ultimate: Includes online multiplayer, the broadest catalog and additional benefits such as cloud gaming and other premium features. Xbox’s current Ultimate page displays $19.99 per month, subject to change and automatic renewal.
Xbox’s public pages state that plans start at $9.99 per month, but plan cards and promotions can show account-specific or placeholder pricing. Do not assume a universal Essential price; check the checkout screen.
The cheapest normal setup
For someone who owns no Minecraft license, the practical low-cost route is:

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear. It may come repackaged in a generic case.
- Create and explore your very own world where the only limit is what you can imagine
- Play on your own, or with up to 4 players split screen, or 8 players online
- Import your favorite Xbox 360 worlds to the Xbox One Edition
- Play in Creative Mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in Survival Mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Buy the base Minecraft Xbox product, currently listed in the U.S. Store from $19.99.
- Subscribe to the least expensive current Game Pass tier that explicitly includes online console multiplayer—currently shown as Essential.
- Install Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or catalog entitlement, and open the Friends or Multiplayer area.
Ultimate is not necessary solely to unlock Minecraft multiplayer. Choose Premium or Ultimate only if the household will use their larger catalogs or other included features. If Minecraft is included in a selected Game Pass catalog in your region, the subscription may replace the separate game purchase while that entitlement remains active; catalog access is not guaranteed across every plan or date.
Is Minecraft itself free?
A download is not ownership
A free launcher, download button or store installation does not necessarily grant the full game. Check whether the account owns Minecraft or has an active catalog entitlement.
The trial is limited
Minecraft’s official Bedrock trial varies by platform and region, requires account sign-in and limits play to about 90 minutes—approximately four and a half in-game days. The trial does not allow multiplayer or Realms games, so it cannot provide normal free online play on Xbox. See Minecraft’s trial details. The Java trial described at Minecraft.net is for PC, not an Xbox console solution.

- Create your very own world and build to the limits of your imagination
- Explore mighty mountains and living oceans of Infinite worlds, amazing community-made maps, servers, thrilling mini games and more!
- Survive online with friends on Console, mobile, and Windows 10, or share the Adventure at home in split-screen multiplayer
Marketplace purchases are optional
Skins, worlds, add-ons and other Marketplace content cost extra, but they are not required for the base game. A Marketplace Pass is an optional content subscription, not a replacement for Minecraft ownership or Xbox online access.
Can you play without Game Pass?
Same-console play
Local split-screen generally does not use Xbox’s online multiplayer service. If everyone is playing on the same Xbox, you need the game, compatible controllers and the appropriate local account setup—not a subscription merely to connect over the internet.
Online friends and cross-platform play
Joining a friend’s world from Xbox, using supported featured servers, or playing online with Bedrock users on other compatible platforms requires the console’s online multiplayer entitlement. Xbox uses Bedrock on consoles; Java Edition is for Windows, macOS and Linux and does not run natively on Xbox. Bedrock supports cross-play with compatible Bedrock devices, but Java and Bedrock worlds and saves are not interchangeable. Platform details are summarized in Minecraft’s platform comparison.

Do both players need to buy Minecraft?
Each player generally needs Minecraft access on the device being used, either through a purchase or an eligible catalog entitlement. One Xbox purchase should not be treated as a free copy for every separate account or console. Every Xbox participant also needs the account permissions and online access required by Xbox and Minecraft.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What Realms changes—and what it does not
Realms is an optional Mojang/Microsoft-hosted private world. It is useful when invited friends should be able to return to the same world while the owner is offline. In an ordinary player-hosted world, the host normally needs to remain online; when the host leaves, the world may no longer be available.
Realms adds a separate recurring cost and does not replace the Minecraft game or Xbox console online requirement. Realms Plus on Bedrock also includes Marketplace content; Minecraft describes it as a personal server for playing with up to 10 friends and access to its Marketplace catalog. Details are on the official Marketplace Pass page.

- Xbox family and privacy settings allow multiplayer and communication. A child account may require an adult account to change them.

- The console has a stable connection and Xbox/Minecraft services are not experiencing an outage.

Bottom line
Minecraft online multiplayer on Xbox is not fully free. The least expensive ordinary arrangement is the paid Minecraft game (unless your current Game Pass catalog includes it) plus the cheapest active Game Pass tier that includes online console multiplayer. Local split-screen can avoid the online subscription, while the trial cannot host multiplayer. Realms is an optional upgrade for a persistent private world, not a requirement for playing with friends.
