Microsoft’s current US individual listing includes Copilot with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium. Buying Windows by itself is not the subscription that unlocks those app features.
Free Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot are different products
Microsoft uses “Copilot” for more than one access route. The free service is available at no cost at copilot.cloud.microsoft. Microsoft Support says it can be used across Windows, macOS, mobile devices and Edge. Signing in is optional for basic access; signing in with a personal Microsoft account enables additional features. This free experience is separate from the Copilot functions embedded in Microsoft 365 applications.

A Microsoft 365 subscription adds Copilot within supported apps. Microsoft lists Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook as a subscription benefit for Personal, Family and Premium plans. The paid experience is governed by plan-dependent usage limits, feature availability, platform support and regional terms. Microsoft can change those limits and terms, so the presence of a Copilot label in an app does not mean unlimited use.
Current US individual plans and prices
The following prices are Microsoft’s US listings captured on October 13, 2026. They are not universal prices: taxes, currency, local promotions and availability can differ by country. The first three plans show both monthly and annual billing, while Pro is shown with monthly billing only.

| Plan | Monthly price | Annual price | Who receives Copilot benefits | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365 Personal | $9.99 per month | $99.99 per year | One subscription owner | Copilot included in supported Microsoft 365 apps; usage limits apply. |
| Microsoft 365 Family | $12.99 per month | $129.99 per year | Subscription owner only | Other household members may use the underlying family subscription, but its AI benefits are not shared. |
| Microsoft 365 Premium | $19.99 per month | $199.99 per year | Subscription owner only | Includes Copilot with higher or exclusive feature limits described by Microsoft’s current plan listing. |
| Microsoft 365 Pro | $99.99 per month | Not listed among the annual options shown | Plan terms determine access | A higher tier with monthly billing shown; check the live feature and eligibility details before subscribing. |
Microsoft says subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Annual billing works out to approximately $8.33 per month for Personal, $10.83 per month for Family and $16.67 per month for Premium when the listed annual amount is divided by 12. Those are arithmetic equivalents, not separate monthly prices. Compared with paying the listed monthly rate for 12 months, the displayed annual totals are lower by $19.89 for Personal, $25.89 for Family and $39.89 for Premium.
What “included” means in each consumer plan
Microsoft 365 Personal
Personal is the straightforward choice for one person who wants Microsoft 365 apps and Copilot under one account. The US listing identifies Copilot as included and associates the benefit with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. The listing does not promise unlimited prompts or a fixed number of AI actions. Limits, supported platforms and available features can change.
Microsoft 365 Family
Family is priced for a household subscription, but Copilot does not automatically follow every shared seat. Microsoft’s plan information says the AI benefits belong to the subscription owner. Adding family members therefore should not be interpreted as giving each person their own Copilot allowance in Microsoft 365 apps. If another household member needs the app-integrated AI benefit, check whether that person must hold a separate eligible subscription.

Premium costs more than Personal and Family. Microsoft positions it as a higher tier with higher or exclusive feature limits for the owner. The exact caps and exclusive features are volatile; rely on the live plan description rather than an old number quoted elsewhere. The central licensing rule remains the same: the subscription owner receives the AI benefits, not every person who can use the shared household subscription.

Microsoft 365 Pro
Microsoft’s US individual page lists Pro at $99.99 per month and does not show an annual option in the cited listing. Because the available material does not enumerate every Pro entitlement, do not assume that its price alone explains a specific Copilot limit or app capability. Review the current Pro feature list and account eligibility before choosing it.
Does Windows itself include Copilot?
Windows and Microsoft 365 are related products, but they are not the same license. Microsoft’s Windows-focused explainer describes Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps as a subscription benefit and identifies Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium as the consumer plans that include it. It also warns that availability can vary by device, platform and region.
That wording does not establish that buying a Windows license, owning a particular PC, or installing a particular Windows edition automatically supplies the same Copilot features found in Microsoft 365 apps. A Windows computer can provide access to the free Copilot service, subject to Microsoft’s platform and regional availability, while the in-app Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook experience depends on an eligible Microsoft 365 subscription and a supported setup.

Likewise, a Copilot-capable PC is not presented in the cited material as a prerequisite for the subscription benefit. Hardware may affect which features appear on a device, but it does not replace the Microsoft 365 license that Microsoft identifies for app-integrated Copilot.

Can you share Copilot with family members?
The answer is different for the underlying subscription and for its AI benefits. Family is designed for more than one household user, but Microsoft states that Copilot benefits are reserved for the subscription owner. Premium follows the same owner-only AI rule. Sharing the plan therefore does not mean sharing one owner’s Copilot quota with every member.
Before purchasing Family for a household, decide who actually needs Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps. If one person uses Word and Excel with AI assistance, Family may provide a lower household cost than buying several separate plans for the other Microsoft 365 benefits. If multiple people each require their own Copilot access, compare the cost of individual eligible subscriptions instead of assuming that shared seats include shared AI.
How usage limits and availability affect the value
“Included” describes licensing, not unlimited capacity. Microsoft says usage limits apply and that availability, platforms and regions can vary. Limits may differ between plans, and Premium is described as offering higher or exclusive limits. Microsoft can also change features after a subscription is purchased.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the current feature list for the exact apps you use: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are the apps identified in the plan material.
- Confirm that your device and platform are supported; an identical account may not expose every feature on every device.
- Check your country’s Microsoft store rather than converting the US price, because regional pricing and availability are not guaranteed to match.
- Review the account that owns the subscription. On Family and Premium, that owner is the person to whom the AI benefit is attached.
- Expect service limits to be stated as plan terms that may change, not as a permanent entitlement.
Choosing between free Copilot and a paid plan
Use the free service when
- You want conversational Copilot without paying for Microsoft 365.
- You do not need Copilot embedded directly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Outlook.
- You are testing whether Copilot fits your workflow before subscribing.
- You use a mix of Windows, macOS, mobile devices or Edge and only need the standalone experience.
Choose Microsoft 365 Personal when
- One person needs the Microsoft 365 application suite and in-app Copilot.
- You prefer the lowest listed individual monthly price among the plans that include Copilot.
- You do not need household sharing.
Choose Microsoft 365 Family when
- Several people need the underlying household Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Only the owner, or a clearly identified primary user, needs the Copilot benefit.
- The household values shared subscription access even though AI benefits are owner-only.
Choose Microsoft 365 Premium when
- The subscription owner expects to use Copilot heavily enough that the higher or exclusive limits matter.
- You have checked Microsoft’s current Premium feature list and confirmed that its additional benefits justify the price difference.
Consider Pro only after checking its terms
Pro is listed at $99.99 per month, far above the other consumer prices shown. The available plan information does not provide enough detail to infer which specific Copilot capabilities justify that tier. Treat it as a separate decision: verify the current eligibility, limits, included apps and billing terms before committing.

What organizations receive
Consumer prices should not be used as business pricing. Microsoft’s licensing guidance describes Microsoft 365 Copilot for organizations as a separately licensed add-on that requires an eligible prerequisite Microsoft 365 plan. The same guidance describes Copilot Chat as automatically included for organizations with eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions.
Those are different entitlements. An organization may have Copilot Chat through an existing eligible subscription without owning the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on for the full in-app experience. Administrators should check Microsoft’s current eligibility documentation for the exact prerequisite license, user assignment rules and regional terms before budgeting or assigning seats.
A practical way to verify your own access
- Identify whether you are asking about the free Copilot service or Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps. They use different access and licensing rules.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription and open your Microsoft 365 account or subscription details. Confirm the plan name rather than relying on a device label.
- Check the plan’s live benefits for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Look for stated usage limits and any owner-only language.
- Open the Microsoft 365 app on the device where you intend to work and verify that it is signed in to the eligible account. Availability can differ by device, platform and region.
- If you are using a Family plan, confirm which account is the subscription owner. Other household members should not be assumed to receive the owner’s AI benefit.
- For a work account, ask the administrator whether you have Copilot Chat through an eligible subscription or whether the Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on has been assigned.
Common misunderstandings
“My Windows PC has Copilot, so Word must include it.”
Not necessarily. Access to a Windows-level or standalone Copilot experience does not prove that your Microsoft 365 apps have an eligible subscription benefit.
“Family means every member gets Copilot.”
No. Microsoft identifies the subscription owner as the recipient of the Family plan’s AI benefits.
Best Value
“A paid Microsoft 365 plan gives unlimited AI use.”
No. Microsoft states that usage limits apply, and those limits can vary by plan and change over time.
“Business Copilot works like consumer Copilot.”
Business licensing separates included Copilot Chat from the paid Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on. Eligibility depends on the organization’s prerequisite subscription.
Bottom line
You do not need to buy Windows to obtain Copilot. The free Copilot service is available separately, while Copilot embedded in Microsoft 365 apps is included with Microsoft 365 Personal, Family and Premium on Microsoft’s current US individual listing. Personal is for one owner, Family and Premium reserve AI benefits for the subscription owner, and Pro is a much higher monthly tier whose exact Copilot value must be checked in the live listing. For organizations, Copilot Chat may be included with an eligible subscription, but Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate add-on.
