Its mix of town management, production, hero possession and night defence is more substantial after the October 1, 2026 New Beginnings update. But it is not a finished game: Chapter One is playable from start to finish, while combat, balance and other systems remain subject to change. Wait if you want a polished final release or need dependable Steam Deck support.
What kind of game is Masters of Albion?
Masters of Albion is a single-player simulation and strategy game from 22cans, available on Steam Early Access since April 22, 2026. From an isometric god-game view, you shape settlements and manage their people; you can also descend into the world by possessing heroes, workers and other characters.

The game’s loops span building and running towns, housing and hiring workers, managing businesses and production, designing goods for orders, exploring as a hero, and defending settlements at night. Its fantasy setting presents an Albion transformed by modern technology as magic returns, with the corrupting Orken Stone as a central threat. The appeal is the ability to switch between broad oversight and direct intervention rather than focusing on city building alone. Steam’s game listing describes the available game and its Early Access status.

What does the New Beginnings update change?
On October 1, 2026, 22cans released its first major update, New Beginnings, also called version 2.0. The studio said the changes respond to feedback about performance, repetitive nights, shallow progression and interactions that did not feel rewarding. This is a substantial redesign of the early experience and several central systems, not a declaration that development is complete.
#1 Best Overall
- Masters of the Night - EN
- Expanded opening: The prologue now includes more places, choices and lore.
- Story-led work: Random product orders were replaced by job series from different order givers.
- Product design: The design table was redesigned.
- Corruption: A spreading corruption system affects Albion.
- Night defence: Encounters now revolve around objectives and lasting reward cards. Objectives can include defeating a set number of enemies, surviving for a limited time or escorting worshippers.
The official update notes describe the changes and explain that version 2.0 requires a new save: a version 1.4 save cannot be loaded into it. 22cans said the old 1.4 branch would remain available through Steam for one month after the update, so players returning to a legacy save should check Steam’s available branches before launching. Read the New Beginnings update notes on Steam Community.
How much content is available?
The official Steam Early Access description says Chapter One can be played from beginning to end. That is a defined current slice of the game, not evidence that the final game’s full planned scope is already present. 22cans estimates around 12 months in Early Access, while explicitly allowing that the schedule may move.
The studio says it plans to open more areas of the world and continue refining combat, difficulty balance, alignment, optional quests, the user interface and progression; crafting and production may also develop further. If you buy now, you are choosing the existing Chapter One and the opportunity to play as the game changes, rather than a guaranteed completion date or settled final feature list. Steam’s Early Access description sets out the current access and development plans.

How well does it run on PC?
Steam lists Windows PC requirements of 8 GB RAM and a 20 GB install at minimum, with 16 GB RAM and an SSD recommended. The minimum graphics requirement is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or GTX 1660 Super, or an AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT; recommended graphics are an RTX 3060 or RX 6600.
| Steam requirement | Minimum | Recommended |

| DirectX | Version 11 | Not separately stated on Steam |
| Storage | 20 GB | 20 GB; SSD recommended |
These are the Windows specifications listed on the Steam store page, which also warns that stable performance is not guaranteed below minimum specifications.
For version 2.0, 22cans says it replaced the rendering system and rebuilt or converted assets. The studio reports up to double the frame rate in its tests, while noting that results vary with hardware, resolution and graphics settings. In an October 1, 2026 PC Gamer report, Peter Molyneux described an average of “between 60 and 80 frames” in the context of recommended system specifications. That is his attributed report, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for a particular PC. The official Steam Community update notes contain the studio’s performance qualification; PC Gamer’s update report gives the context for Molyneux’s comment.

Does Masters of Albion work on Steam Deck?
Do not buy it on the assumption that it runs well on Steam Deck. A PC Gamer report from May 5, 2026 said Valve rated the game Unsupported because its graphics settings could not be configured to run well on Deck. 22cans acknowledged that it had not met Valve’s performance threshold and said it would seek re-verification after optimization. The studio’s update notes describe a planned resubmission, not a confirmed change in rating. Check the live Steam Deck compatibility badge before buying, because the cited rating may have changed since that May report. PC Gamer’s Steam Deck report covers the cited status and developer response.
What are the main reasons to wait?
- It is still Early Access: Steam warns that the game is unfinished and may change. The developer has identified combat, balance and UI as areas for further iteration.
- The update breaks old saves: Version 1.4 progress does not carry into version 2.0, so a substantial update can mean restarting.
- Handheld performance is uncertain: The cited Steam Deck status is Unsupported, and optimization and resubmission do not by themselves confirm compatibility.
- Content is still being developed: Chapter One is playable through, but further areas and refinements are part of the Early Access plan.
Steam’s developer-authored content disclosure also mentions adult language, graphic violence, alcohol use, an image of a beheaded dog, an execution choice and crude gestures. The Steam listing contains the disclosure and current PC requirements.

Consider it now if the premise itself appeals: you want to design and manage settlements, then take direct control through possession, exploration and defence. It is a better fit for someone willing to meet a game partway through development than for someone looking for a finished, stable strategy campaign.

- A unique, modernized twist on traditional murder-mystery games.
- Mature content appropriate for 1 to 5 players, ages 16 and up.
- Play as a FBI agent that goes undercover in a high security prison.
- Put yourself in the shoes of a morally grey character, where you will have to make hard decisions that will affect the path you go down.
- Players must use Google Maps, websites, and email to find the truth and answer puzzles.
A useful comparison with other god games or city-builders is not simply which has the largest town or most battles. Ask which parts of this particular blend you want: hands-on god-like intervention or indirect management, hero-led exploration, recurring night defence, and whether you can tolerate unfinished balance and interface systems. Also consider whether a save restart after a major update would be acceptable. In a March 2026 pre-release preview, PC Gamer likened its design lineage to Fable, Black & White and Dungeon Keeper, while describing early combat as simple and in need of refinement. That preview predates version 2.0 and should not be treated as a current assessment of combat. Read PC Gamer’s March 2026 preview.
Robert Jones of PC Gamer wrote after New Beginnings that the update addressed weaknesses in the launch build and that the game was recommendable to god-game fans, while still far from finished. That is one reviewer’s judgment, not a broad review-score consensus. His October 1, 2026 report explains that assessment alongside the update.
