At the listed US prices, Digital Deluxe is the best value if you already plan to buy Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and want the Year 1 pass as a package. It costs $25 more than Standard, while PlayStation currently lists the pass for $34.99 on its own. But only one of the four DLC characters has been identified in the official sources reviewed: Phoenix Cyclops. If you are buying mainly for a particular character, wait for that character to be confirmed.
What each edition costs and includes
These are US prices: the game FAQ gives recommended retail prices, and the PlayStation US Store lists the standalone pass price. Regional pricing, discounts and store listings can differ or change.

At those listed prices, Standard plus the standalone pass totals $94.98 before any discounts. Digital Deluxe is $84.99 and also includes two lobby items, making it the cheaper route to the pass at current US list prices. The arithmetic is based on those listings, not a prediction of sale prices.

What the Year 1 pass gives you—and what is still unknown
The official FAQ describes four additional characters and one stage in the pass. It says they become accessible upon release, but the reviewed FAQ text does not provide release dates. PlayStation Blog announced Phoenix Cyclops as the first additional Year 1 character in a July 23, 2026 post by Takeshi Yamanaka, producer at Arc System Works: the announcement identifies Phoenix Cyclops and discusses planned post-launch updates.

The other three character identities are not confirmed by the official sources cited here. So the pass is easier to recommend if you want the four-character-and-stage package regardless of who joins; if you are interested only in one specific fighter, wait for an official announcement and gameplay details. Yamanaka wrote, “For us, launch day is not the finish line—it’s the starting point.”
Does the base game make the pass worthwhile?
PlayStation describes a 20-character launch roster and a 4v4 tag-team fighting game with adjustable traditional and quick inputs. The game page also lists Episode Mode, cross-play, offline options and online modes. Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 review assessed the game as mechanically deep for experienced fighting-game players, while noting that tutorials and simpler inputs can help newcomers. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every new player will find the systems easy.

The DLC pass expands a base game that already has a defined launch roster; it is not required to access the listed offline modes. The official FAQ lists Episode Mode, local Versus, Training Mode, All-Star Arena, Battle Guides and Character Guides as offline content.

According to the official FAQ, PS5 online gameplay and features require an internet connection and PlayStation Plus. PC online gameplay and features require an internet connection and a PlayStation account. If you mainly want to play offline, the listed single-player, local and training modes provide options without relying on online play.

The FAQ confirms a physical PS5 Standard Edition and says its owners can buy the Digital Deluxe or Ultimate upgrade in the PlayStation Store. That means a physical Standard buyer can start with the base game and decide later whether the pass—or the Ultimate cosmetics—are worth adding digitally.

- Choose Digital Deluxe if you have decided to buy the game and want the Year 1 pass as a whole. At current listed US prices, its $25 premium over Standard is less than the pass’s $34.99 standalone listing.
- Choose Standard if you are undecided about the unnamed characters, want to wait for release details, or would rather buy DLC selectively later.
- Choose Ultimate only if the five extra costumes and color variations for the 20 launch characters have value to you independent of the pass. The listed Ultimate package does not add more Year 1 characters than Digital Deluxe.
- Wait before buying for one character if that fighter is the main reason you want the game. Phoenix Cyclops is confirmed as the first Year 1 character in the cited announcement; the other three identities are not established there.
