Recent Steam fixes reportedly address some progression blockers, crashes, NPC behavior, and achievement tracking, but those reports apply to the Steam version and do not establish the current console state.

Lincoln’s campaign also includes strategic choices. You recruit lieutenants, assign territory, decide whom to reward, and can eventually betray allies. Those decisions alter the organization around Lincoln and provide more agency than simply following a linear revenge plot, even though the major structure of taking over the city remains consistent.
The main reason to play: story and atmosphere
A focused revenge narrative
Lincoln’s motivation is immediate and personal: the Mafia destroys the family he returns to after the war. That premise gives the campaign a clear emotional direction. The story is built around retaliation, loyalty, and the cost of replacing one criminal hierarchy with another, rather than around a lighthearted open-world sandbox.
The game’s tone is deliberately serious. It uses the period setting to explore how racism and institutional power affect ordinary interactions, not merely to provide vintage cars and music. TIME reviewer Matt Peckham described race as an atmosphere that influences exchanges across the world and praised the story’s ethical ambition. His review was published in October 2016, so it is best read as a perspective on the narrative and launch design, not as a current technical assessment.
New Bordeaux as a character
New Bordeaux is presented as a detailed 1960s city divided into districts with different social and criminal identities. Driving between neighborhoods, listening to period radio, and observing the city’s visual language are central to the experience. If you enjoy games that establish a strong place and period, this world-building can compensate for stretches in which the objectives feel familiar.
The atmosphere is also why the game can remain compelling after its novelty fades. The setting, performances, and revenge premise reinforce one another; the world explains why Lincoln’s campaign matters and why each district takeover has political as well as criminal consequences.

How the gameplay works
Three approaches to combat
The official Steam description presents three broad approaches: brute force, direct gunplay, and stealth-oriented “stalk-and-kill” tactics. In practice, you can enter many encounters aggressively, use cover and firearms, or isolate targets and remove them quietly. The choice changes the feel of an encounter, although it does not turn the game into three wholly separate campaigns.
- Brute force: Push through resistance with weapons and close-range aggression when speed matters more than discretion.
- Gunplay: Use cover, firearms, and Lincoln’s combat abilities to clear guarded areas directly.
- Stealth: Scout positions, separate enemies, and reduce opposition before a larger confrontation.
These options are most useful when you vary them yourself. The game gives you room to approach a situation differently, but the surrounding mission goals often remain recognizable from one district to the next.

The takeover loop and its repetition
Lincoln weakens Mafia control by targeting revenue streams, disrupting operations, gathering information, and confronting higher-ranking figures. The open-world campaign repeatedly asks you to perform related forms of criminal takeover before a district can be claimed. That structure makes progress easy to understand, but it also creates the game’s biggest weakness: many missions feel like variations on the same sequence.
TIME’s launch review praised the revenge story and world-building while calling the game monotonous and noting bugs. A PC Gamer report dated October 10, 2026, likewise described the game as still somewhat repetitive while reporting improvements to specific Steam problems. Neither source establishes that every player will encounter the same issue or that the repetition has been redesigned; the core structure is still the core structure.
Lieutenants and organizational choices
As Lincoln expands, he distributes territory and rewards among lieutenants. The decisions add tension to the empire-building fantasy: allies have competing interests, and the way you divide control affects relationships and the people available to you. The official description specifically frames these choices around rewarding or betraying lieutenants.

This system supplies meaningful narrative variation, but it should not be mistaken for a completely branching role-playing game. The city still has to be taken district by district, and the repeated operational tasks remain present regardless of which lieutenant receives a territory.
Is the repetition a deal-breaker?
It depends on what you need from an open-world game. If your priority is a constantly changing stream of activities, Mafia III is a risky choice. The takeover formula can make the middle of the campaign feel like a checklist, particularly if you try to clear every optional objective before advancing the story.
If you are willing to treat the repeated operations as the framework supporting Lincoln’s revenge, the trade-off is easier to accept. The setting, dialogue, and character decisions give context to otherwise familiar objectives. Playing in shorter sessions, alternating stealth and direct combat, and advancing the main story instead of exhaustively clearing every icon can reduce the sense of routine, but those are play-style suggestions rather than a claim that the underlying structure changes.
What the Definitive Edition includes

Existing owners and upgrade rules
Take-Two announced in May 2020 that existing owners on PS4, Xbox One, and Steam would receive the Definitive Edition upgrade at no additional cost at that time. That was a historical policy, not a guarantee that every account today has the same entitlement. Store migrations, disc ownership, regional editions, and platform changes can affect what appears in your library.
- Open the store page while signed into the account that owns Mafia III.
- Check whether the listing shows the Definitive Edition as owned, downloadable, or available at no charge.
- Review the add-on section to confirm that the three story DLC packs and bonus packs are attached to your account.
- If you own a physical copy, verify that the disc region matches the account region before assuming a digital entitlement will appear.
Do not assume that an old purchase automatically transfers between PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Entitlements are generally platform-specific unless the current store explicitly states otherwise.

Xbox Series X|S
The current Microsoft Xbox listing describes a Series X|S edition with 60 frames-per-second gameplay and technical improvements. It lists October 8, 2026, as the release date. Those are store-listed features for that edition; they should not be generalized to other platforms without a corresponding listing.
PC and Steam
Steam lists the Definitive Edition for PC. PC Gamer reported on October 10, 2026, that an anniversary update addressed locations where players could become stuck in story missions, some mid-mission crashes, aspects of NPC behavior, and achievement tracking. The report concerns the Steam update. It is not evidence that identical fixes were released on consoles.

You may want to skip it if you require
- Distinct mission mechanics in every chapter.
- An open world packed with unrelated activities rather than repeated takeover operations.
- A light tone or content suitable for younger players.
- A guarantee that every historical bug has been eliminated on your platform.
- A single universal price, edition, or physical release available in every region.
What to check before you buy
- Confirm the platform. Identify whether you are buying the Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, or another listing; features and fixes are not automatically interchangeable.
- Confirm the bundle. Look for the Definitive Edition name and verify that all three story DLCs are listed.
- Check your library. Existing PS4, Xbox One, and Steam owners should inspect upgrade and add-on entitlements before paying again.

The Definitive Edition is the clearest version to consider because it packages the complete story content.
The qualification is substantial: repeated takeover objectives can make the campaign monotonous, and technical history differs by platform. Recent Steam maintenance improves specific reported problems, while the Xbox Series X|S listing advertises 60 FPS and other technical improvements. Neither changes the basic decision. Choose Mafia III when narrative atmosphere and character-driven crime drama matter more to you than constant mechanical novelty.
