Is Liquid Gallium Covalent or Metallic? What the Evidence Shows

Liquid gallium is metallic overall, but some studies identify local, short-lived Ga–Ga features described as covalent-like. Whether those features amount to actual Ga₂ dimers is disputed, and a 2024 analysis argues that covalency is not significant near the phase transition but becomes more important at higher temperatures.

What does “covalent character” mean in liquid gallium?

In this debate, “covalent character” refers to local electronic or structural signs of bond-like interaction between nearby gallium atoms. It does not mean that the liquid is established as a collection of stable molecules. Liquid gallium can retain metallic behavior while showing local features that researchers interpret differently.

The distinction matters because a close pair of atoms, charge accumulation between them, and a persistent Ga₂ molecule are not interchangeable claims. Evidence for a local feature does not by itself establish a stable, discrete dimer.

Does liquid gallium contain Ga₂ dimers?

The answer depends on the conditions studied and on what a paper counts as a dimer. The literature includes both evidence interpreted as covalent-like pairing and a direct challenge to the existence of discrete Ga₂ units.

Evidence for transient bond-like features

In a 1993 ab initio molecular-dynamics simulation at 1000 K, X. G. Gong, G. Chiarotti, M. Parrinello, and E. Tosatti reported very short-lived Ga–Ga bonds alongside metallic character. They interpreted the features as remnants of crystalline alpha gallium. Their abstract said the results agreed with scattering data and Knight-shift experiments; the reported bonds were transient, not a claim that the liquid consists of stable Ga₂ molecules.

In 2008, L. E. González, D. J. González, and M. J. Stott associated the high-q shoulder in liquid gallium’s structure factor with close atomic pairs. Their abstract described charge accumulation between typical pairs, an indicator earlier work had interpreted as evidence for covalent bonding. That is evidence for a local structural and electronic feature, not conclusive proof of persistent dimers.

A study that rejected the dimer interpretation

Jianjun Yang, John S. Tse, and Toshiaki Iitaka’s 2011 first-principles study examined liquid gallium near the melting line at ambient and elevated pressures, up to 5.8 GPa. Their detailed analysis refuted the proposed Ga₂ dimers under those studied conditions and found liquid structure and electronic properties resembling the underlying Ga-II and Ga-III crystalline phases. This is a study-specific conclusion; it does not rule out every transient bond-like feature at all temperatures and pressures.

How does temperature change the bonding picture?

Near the phase transition

S. Lambie, K. G. Steenbergen, and N. Gaston’s 2024 analysis of extensive ab initio molecular-dynamics simulations argues that covalency is not a significant feature close to the phase transition. The paper, published in Materials Horizons on 24 June 2024, links its temperature-dependent account to gallium’s resistivity decreasing on melting and then increasing anomalously and nonlinearly as temperature rises. That link is the authors’ proposed explanation, not an uncontested causal rule.

At higher temperatures

The same 2024 analysis argues that covalency becomes more important at higher temperatures. A separate 2017 study by L. H. Xiong and coauthors reported a liquid structural change around 1000 K, based on in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction combined with ab initio molecular dynamics. It associated the change with differences in activation energy for self-diffusion, heat capacity, coordination, density, viscosity, resistivity, and thermoelectric power, as well as changes in bond-orientational order, the fraction of covalent dimers, string length, and local packing.

The reported change around 1000 K is a structural crossover in that study, not universal agreement that liquid gallium contains dimers. Nor should its temperature be treated as a universal threshold at which every sample suddenly becomes covalent.

Why do the studies reach different conclusions?

  • They examine different conditions. Results near melting, at elevated pressure, and at higher temperature need not describe the same liquid structure. The 2011 dimer analysis covered conditions near the melting line and pressures up to 5.8 GPa; other studies focused on simulations or measurements around 1000 K.
  • They use different evidence. Diffraction and scattering reveal structural patterns, while electronic-structure simulations can examine charge distribution and atomic motion. A combined approach can connect the two, but the interpretation of a structural signal as a bond still requires care.
  • They make claims at different levels. A close pair or brief bond-like interaction is a narrower claim than a persistent molecular dimer. Some disagreement reflects this difference in what “bond” or “dimer” means in a particular analysis.

What evidence supports liquid gallium’s metallic behavior?

Metallic character is not just a label retained from solid gallium. In a 1995 first-principles study, J. M. Holender and M. J. Gillan, with M. C. Payne and A. D. Simpson, ran 8 ps of simulation at 702 K and 982 K. They reported a calculated electronic density of states close to the free-electron form and electrical conductivity in satisfactory accord with measurement. Their calculated structure agreed closely with experiment, although their simulated diffusion coefficient was noticeably lower than the measured value.

Those results support describing liquid gallium as metallic overall; they do not settle whether local bond-like interactions appear under other conditions. Metallic behavior and local covalent-like character are not mutually exclusive descriptions when they refer to different aspects of the liquid.

How should the competing claims be read?

  • Use “metallic” for the overall electronic behavior supported by conductivity and density-of-states evidence.
  • Use “covalent-like local character” or “transient Ga–Ga bonds” when describing the short-lived features reported in specific studies.
  • Use “proposed Ga₂ dimers” when discussing the contested molecular interpretation, and identify the conditions and analysis behind the claim.
  • Do not describe liquid gallium without qualification as covalent or as a stable collection of Ga₂ molecules.
